Not sure about the siren, but it use to use a strobe where I worked.

I think the ones I saw (former volunteer) used an infrared transmitter mounted in the emergency vehicle to trigger a light status change, this did not always work because the cross traffic was not expecting the SHORT cycle and ran the red lights!!
