We’ve been coming down to the villages for about 40 years now we remember there was an area, fairly close to Spanish Springs, that had buffaloes. You could walk up to the fence and watch them I forget exactly where it was but anyway what happened? Are there still buffaloes in the villages if so where.

They seem to want to keep it secret to their exact whereabouts. They are around still just tucked away.

Some goofy kid, probably unsupervised by parents and grandparents, was up too close by the fence and both the kid and buffaco got spooked. The family complained.

My bet is the buffalo all went to Publix.

Last time I saw them they were over on the right of hole 6 at Amberwood.
That was about 3 years ago.

"Ohhhhh, give me a home where the buffalo roam"(ed). . .

Every now and then, it hits me that I have been hanging around TOTV almost since the beginning. I try to break up with it, but it's like trying to break up with Graeter's ice cream. I eventually succumb.

Anyway, there was great consternation among TOTVers -- in 2008 -- when the buffalo went the way of who knows where.

If you are using the old version of TOTV, you can go to 'search' and put buffalo questions into the keyword line. It might take you a while because at first the search will want to give you only 300 posts with a hit on the word 'buffalo.' Eventually though, you can dig into the archives that go way back.

I always thought there probably was a tax advantage to temporarily pasturing the buffalo on vacant land and that their future was intended to be elsewhere. I had no problem with that.

I never thought the buffalo were put there smack dab in plain sight to entertain me.

I sort of remember that there was talk of irresponsible adults who were feeding them and letting kids get too close. (Never saw that, but it is not a big leap to believe it happened.)

When we first moved here, 2013, there were some on the North side of 466a, long gone now, no idea about the northern area.

That herd was offered to Stu Paquatte (I-H Formal Tractor Museum) in Leesburg. He's the guy that paved all the roads in Spanish Springs. He turned down the herd because he was thinning out his own herd of buffalo and didn't have the room. Seems the two herds were bought together by old man Schwartz and Paquette when they were friends in the 90s. Last he told me, that herd was sold to another cattle raiser in Florida. Could not be used for food because The Villages was not USDA approved farmers.

If you search Buffalo and the Villages you should get a thread from 2013 on Talk of the Villages that has a photo of a buffalo.

You are right about where the Buffalo herd was on El Camino. It was where they later built Freedom Point. And I can remember taking our visitors there to a parking area, where you could feed them carrots over the fence and take photos. And the story that I kept hearing (can't confirm if it was true) is that Florida taxes have a favorable rate if the land is used for livestock.

So (as the story goes) The Villages would keep Buffalo on land that they didn't need right away for the tax benefits. Plus it was a great for marketing - Give me a HOME where the Buffalo roam (which is how the high school got it's mascot name). As they eventually developed those areas they would keep moving them to more southern areas until those areas were ready for development. Then (as the story goes) when the buffalo were in the southern part of The Villages, someone wanted a close up photo and they climbed over the fence. Didn't hear whether they got injured, but The Villages feared potential law suits and either got rid of, or moved the buffalo out of sight (probably to land they they don't need to develop soon and receive the livestock tax break).

Anyway, that is the story as I heard it when we first starting visiting The Villages back in 2002. I can also remember reading a story where one buffalo got through a fence, and that might have also resulted in there disappearance. But I'm sure it wasn't the buffalo hunters shooting the herd for meat to serve in The Villages restaurants.:icon_wink: Although, at some of the restaurants you never can tell.

The story I heard was the same. Somebody got into the fenced in area where they should’ve never went, and were injured. Buffalo are wild animals, but some people think they are pets. I heard that they sued the villages, so the villages got rid of the rest of them. Only takes a few idiots to wreck it for the many.

I enjoyed seeing the Buffalos when I moved her in 2004, but supposedly someone hopped the fence where they were and after that these animals were gone. It takes only one stupid person to ruin things for everyone.

Last saw them publicly in a field behind Red Lobster in about 2012. Then they were moved up by Briarwood golf course, as mentioned. They are now still local, but are on private land. Overreaching parents/grandparents ruin many a good thing with a lack of common sense & respect.

There are still some Buffalo here in the area north of 466, east of the polo grounds.
If you are going west on 466 just past Morse, there is a gate on the right with stone, turn in there, the gate will automatically open, drive in there for about 2 miles and on the left there is a field with Buffalo. You will see a race track across the street.

Someone was bitten when feeding the animals right by the sign that said DO NOT FEED THE BUFFALO. Because ignorance is golden the animals were removed from sight because TV did not want the liability. Someone always spoils it for all.

There was a scene in the movie "Wild Hogs" where they played a game called Slap the Bull. Didn't work out well there - can't imagine it would work out well in real life.

Some unintelligent people allowed their child into the enclosure to try and pet a baby buffalo (that sounds smart doesn't it?) and mama didn't like it. I don't remember if the mother buffalo bit the kid or not, but the kids parents sued the Villages so that was the end of the buffalo within public view. They moved them on the other side of CR 102 or 103 where you could see them from the Fox Run course at Glen View for a few years. After Mark Morse passed, I think the Morse family sold them off. Sad and pathetic but that's what dumbing down the school curriculum must have contributed to our society.

I had them right beside my yard.... near Freedom Point area. However, so many people were trying to Pet them, feed them and bother them... one buffalo either stepped on them, or bit them by accident taking an apple. That they tried to "Sue" the Villages. Now keep in mind , signs were posted, notices out , "do not feed the Buffalo" "do not pet the Buffalo"... but people did. So now a few people were trying to "sue" the Villages. That the Villages Finally Removed the Buffalo, because of the law suits they were getting. Sad, because of the Few, it was ruined for the rest of us. It was a treat to have them...I think if I'm not mistaken, they were rehomed to a farm. Then the Villages, rented out the land and some locals would board their Bulls, which worked very nicely. Land was commercial property and they built on it.

Beginning in the 1670's, Spanish journals record bison in Florida, especially in the panhandle, and in neighboring states. While these bison were commonly hunted by Native Americans and Spaniards, and bison robes were common possessions,

I don't recall ANYONE saying the critters were mistreated or poorly cared for here in The Villages.

No they were sent out west to the family ranch, the unruly kid stuck his head thru the fence and the mother buff had just given birth and charged the fence scaring the little brat Mommy threatened to lawsuit . another example of lack of parental control and entitlement causing others to lose out .

A few years ago, I took my parents to Paquette’s Tractor Musem. Mr. Paquette was there and let me take photos of his small herd. One had just had a new baby. That’s the only place I’ve seen them near TV. He may still have a few.

They were here when we moved in some stupid yahoo decided it would be nice to get in and get pictures of they with the Buffalo, Buffalo did not want a close up and boogered the idiot up a little. they sued the villages. Guess they could not read the signs that said the buffalo are wild and do not go near them. Don't renumber what state they were from but the education seems to lacking when it comes to reading. Needless to say, they won and the buffalo were pulled from the village. I miss them too.

Some dumb idiot grandfather was trying to put his 4 or 5 year old granddaughter on one of the buffaloes that was near the fence near Freedom Pointe when they were located there. Because of his stupidity and the huge potential for a lawsuit, they Developer took them where they are not accessible, IF they still have them after all these years. Some people are complete morons.

Hello.
That would be the preserve across Morse BLVD from where the former Hacienda Hills Country Club was located. My backyard.
The Bison are gone. Most logical assumption is the preserve is a bit too small those big animals
As did the Burrowing Owls. Coyotes got them.
Lately there are what appears to be 4 Coyotes moving all over. and on some days there may be a red fox in there. Apparently, the Foxes are moving down the panhandle
Nowadays it is all Tortoises and birds galore.

For some extra fun, go check the big lakes by the Morse Gate. There are huge Brown Turtles (softshells?) in all of them. Size of a doormat. I have already spotted about 2 dozen.

Very stupid people. Why would you ever decide to put your grandchild on top of a 2000 pound beast that can run fast and will charge / trample you? The big males in the group are very territorial.
