He will require a current/most recent MRI.

Had unbearable back pain the travel down my left leg and couldn’t walk. When my pain doctor saw my MRI he said epidurals won’t help so he recommended a neurosurgeon. Saw Dr. Christopher Baker in Orlando and though I was against anyone messing around with my spinal cord he put my wife and I at ease by patiently going over my MRI layer by layer. Had L3 and L4 fused and that stopped the pain pretty quickly since the disc was no longer pressing on my spinal cord.
So I definitely recommend advent health and Dr. Baker if you’re needing a competent caring neurosurgeon. (407) 975-0200

Dr Daniel Ho at Shands Hospital. Be sure it's not his brother who is also a neurosurgeon who's focus is the brain not the spine like Dr, D. You have to 'try out' to be a patient. His reputation is such that he only has time for the most challenging patients.
After an 8 hour surgery - half of that time repairing the work done by two other surgeons over the years - he gave me my life back. I've gone from being unable to walk to the end of the driveway and back to trying, trying, trying to break 80. Good luck!

Dr Barry Kaplan Orlando but has office in Leesburg at Blue Cedar hospital. Did surgery on me and my husband. I had torn sciatica in back at L 4-L5, caused extreme pain.I was absolutely pain free after surgery. Husband had rod put in back and was back to golf 3 months later. Highly recommend Dr Kaplan.

Totally agree with twopjt, Dr. Daniel Ho. When selecting any doctor, in addition to getting recommendation, you should check out his/her credentials and the hospital they are affiliated with. Dr. Ho is at Shands/University of Florida Hospital.

I can’t give you a recommendation for a good neurosurgeon, but I can tell you one to stay away from and that is Barry Kaplan. If I thought I could have sued him, I would have done so.
I went to him for back and leg pain. After three MRI’s, which included brain, neck, and lower back. He told me that I needed neck surgery. I questioned why neck surgery and not my back; he told me the neck surgery would alleviate the pain in my back and legs. He told me there was a 95 percent chance that I would see relief.
After the surgery, there was no improvement, he damaged my throat, which has affected my swallowing. He also damaged a nerve that has left some numbness in my neck.
I regret that I didn’t check out his references before I allowed him to cut on me.

First Exercise
Second use Curcuminoids (turmeric, Ginger, Bioperine)
I had a lot of pain from pinched nerve. Need to work those muscles around the injury to bring the spine back into alignment.
Go that route before getting misled by doctors

Highly recommend Christopher Baker in Orlando. He is worth the drive to Orlando. My husband had the same problem but a little higher (cervical). Had fusion surgery and he's good as new. Surgery was easy, recovery was complete.

Summer of 2019 I had my L4/L5 fused by Dr. Bono at Biospine. I went to his Tampa office as I live there, but I understand he also has an office in Orlando. Incredible surgeon, and I’ve been to a number of surgeons over the years. Highly recommend Dr. Bono. I’m now back to playing table tennis , pain free. He also fused my C5 - C7, as I had damaged my spinal cord before the fusions since I waited too long.

my husband has a cyst l4 l5, dr from the Chicago Rehabilitation Institute said the scar tissue from surgery would make it worse, gave a few exercises to do and pain went away, he still does them if it flares up. he had pain down the leg and left foot drop.

You might try "radio ablation" on your back. I've had surgery and lots of shots over time but the RA seems to work the best for about a year. It's when a pain doctor burns the nerves around your L-1 through L-5. The nerves grow back together over time but the procedure works good for a while, maybe up to a year, at least for me.

I am a retired doctor of chiropractic who practiced over 30 years. Chiropractic gave me my life back when I had severe back pain and sciatica. However when I had an auto accident that gave me for major herniated discs in the low back and I could not walk and my sciatica was so severe they put an elevator chair in my home. I had spent thousands of dollars on medical chiropractic physical therapy and epidurals and a failed minimally invasive laser spine surgery that injured me horribly and made my sciatica worse.
Then I discovered IDD internal disc decompression which got me walking pain-free again and put a golf club back in my hands. And that's what I recommended to patients for years until I retired try natural first drug second and surgery last. It is a noninvasive very gentle procedure that takes the pressure off the nerves and rehydrate the disc like a squashed marshmallow becoming more whole again. I know when I had a flareup I went to colony chiropractic Dr. Robert Assaunaught who has an inexpensive decompression table but it helped me. My original decompression table called VAX/D is now in my basement in Atlanta and when I bend over wrong or cough or sneeze or put the tea in the ground wrong, my wife puts me on decompression and four days later I'm back doing things I haven't been able to do for 30 years i.e. golf pickle ball tennis etc. Hope this helps

I have tried spinal epidurals with no success. Also did spinal decompression. Now pain is going done left leg. Thanks Almost all of my spinal epidurals were performed following back surgery in OCT 2017. I finally gave up on them and had a spinal stimulator implanted in FEB. I am 75% improved. Still have strange left leg sensations and can't do the things I used to do without starting to experience discomfort - but I'm 80, so I'm grateful to be able to wake up each day and not read my name in the obits.....

Agree 100%....do whatever you can for yourself first bf allowing surgery.
I too have major L4&L5 issues. I try to walk allot, and most important...have good shoes with good inserts!
I can tell within an hour im going to be sorry -if I'm not wearing that support. Don't lift heavy stuff and do your exercise. Best of luck

I had surgery on my L4 & L5 in January of this year. I highly recommend Dr. Praveen Reddy @ 1725 SE 28TH Loop, Ocala, FL 34471. You can call him @ 352-629-1743. He is a Neurosurgeon. I listened to what he recommended for my recovery and I have been doing excellent.

Have you tried physical therapy? I know someone with the same L4 and L5 issues and is now pain free after a physical therapist showed him how to strengthen his back muscles to support the spine. He was literally debilitated from the pain before the therapy

I also agree with the recommendations above for Dr. Chris Baker at Orlando Neurosurgery in Winter Park. Actually, any of the Neurosurgeons in this practice are excellent. I used to work for Advent Health Orlando and know this practice well. I had neurosurgery from Dr. Melvin Fields with this practice and he saved my vision, which was nearly destroyed by Dr. Praveen Reddy in Ocala. I definitely would never recommend anyone go to him. He has had many medical malpractice cases against him, including mine, which I had to drop because he had covered his tracks too well, unfortunately. He nearly destroyed my eyesight and lied about what he had done. I would not even send a dog to be treated by him. Anyway, yes, Dr. Baker or any of the physicians there at Orlando Neurosurgery would be excellent choices for your spine issue.

We had similar confusion in Pa.
Wanted to see Dr. Gabriel Stein, back surgeon, but wound up seeing his brother Dr. Frank Nathan Stein, a neurosurgeon who is practicing brain transplants. We hi-tailed it out of there fast! 😜

Like twopjt, I also recommend Dr. Daniel Hoh at UF Shands in Gainesville. I went through intense pain for a few months, trying injections, physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractor. I had to make trips to ER several times for pain. Dr. Hoh decided a laminectomy was the appropriate surgery. I've been fine ever since. I found Dr. Hoh through Healthgrades | Find a Doctor - Doctor Reviews - Online Doctor Appointments (http://www.healthgrades.com). His credentials are outstanding and he explains his approach with exceptional clarity.
