They reported on the three smallish sinkholes near Moyer Recreation center. It shows more confidence and authenticity by the paper than when unfavorable events but significant are totally ignored and I (for one) am reading more happily.

Second sink in that pond, last one brought down some of the wall. Golf course is closed, with no open date posted.

Yep, and that picture showed 3 depressions.
Wondered where the second hole was, same site or different. Or where additional information could be found.

Well no good deed goes unpublished. Rumor has it they just posted a position open as reporter. Must have strings attached to reporter.

WAIT. STOP. It isn't that the Daily Sun "HIDES" any sinkholes. They report those on public property. To report sinkholes on private property might affect the value.

They have reported sinkholes. They aren't sneaky. They have certain policies that are kind of old fashioned. For instance, they do not report suicides.

I like The Daily Sun.

I like The Daily Sun too that is why I read it. I like it even better when they report as much relevant local news as possible. Suicide is personal so don’t mind not reading about it.

Lost the retaining wall, didn’t close the course, just the 9th hole. Sometime around September 18, 2017.

The source, I played the course twice a week, no water in the pond, smell of dead fish, retaining wall fell down. So unless it was in my dreams with vivid smells, I am guessing many were a eye witness that played the course. Took pics to send to other half, but don’t feel the need to look them up, I would have to get up and get my phone:faint:

Surprised you don’t remember it.

Yawn...the first sink hole that drained the pond on #9 Escambia took down the retaining wall(left side of the green) and part of the green. The second sink hole was pretty much in the pond only. The one noticed yesterday( played Okee yesterday)had 3 separate holes...one about dead center of the pond at the 9th tee end....a fairly big one going up onto the grass towards the rear of the rec center and then one more to the right of the largest one and closer to the pond edge.

Today they were playing the first 8 holes of Escambia and tomorrow through at least Friday it will be "course closed" per the starter. Today they were working to fill them with dozers and back hoes(not whores). I'm playing tomorrow at Okeechobee just like today.

Whether or not the DS reports sink holes on private property, the value of "private property" is affected. Of course, if the private property is on, or near, newly built Villages homes, you can be sure it won't be reported.

I really like it here. I think the developers do a very good job creating an absolutely wonderful place to spend these golden years. I like The Daily Sun. It is what it is. I don't think it was aiming to be The New York Times or The Washington Post. I think it represents fairly, and mirrors the majority of it's residents. It is a business and it sells stuff. To me that is not greedy or bad, but just the way the world works. They really and truly built a better mouse trap.

So GLAD I found it.

During IRMA that little pond was totally gone by a sink hole and they did MAJOR earth moving to get it back.

The Sun is happy news it is The Villages advertising brochure - ************* site does
not like the privileged? villagers compared to surrounding areas so they show all the ugly news.

So with sink holes from what I have gathered is
1 Stay away from retintion pond.
What else do I need to look for? Stay off golf course ? When you get lots of rain they flood the course?

Sinkholes are natural phenomena that happen, among other places, on top of the Floridian Aquifer, which is where we live. It is gigantic and runs through limestone tunnels and gravel underneath us. During a drought or because of drawdown or because of natural dissolution of the lime, little bits subside. In an area with quite a bit of clay and sand over the underlying limestone, which is big parts of Florida, this subsidence may not show on the surface. In other big parts of Florida, including where we live and Ocala and Silver Springs and all that, there is mostly some sand over the limestone layers and two or three aquifers, so we are more likely to notice a subsidence as a sinkhole. A big one might ruin a couple houses, but it won’t swallow a village. When the water in the pond disappeared, it ran into cracks in the rocks and gradually into the top aquifer, which we don’t use for drinking, usually. Under that is a layer of clay that is hard for water to penetrate. Under that is the Floridian Aquifer, which is mammoth.

Amazing reply! Thank you, MandoMan.

One of my greatest joys of being part of The Villages community is that we are heard, (but not always agreed with), we are part of the community, we shape the village. So grateful to be part of all this.

I’d rather read the Post and the Times who do investigative journalism and expose the lies and misdeeds particularly between 2016-2020 instead of the the Daily Rag (aka Daily Sun) that present the Developer’s views and aims (btw who owns the Daily Rag) above all else as well as the outlandish conservative opinion columns.

I read the Daily Sun, but do not rely on it for national news. I recognize it for what it is, and if I want to know about an accident or what’s going on with the ambulance service committee, as examples, I’ll read v*******-****.com. Otherwise, I look to other sources, such as NPR.

I do agree with Velvet, and was surprised to read about the sinkholes in the DS. More of that type of hard news reporting is always welcome.

The 'picture' of houses overlooking the sinkhole was a drawing simply to show what a sinkhole looks like. It was an informative column explaining what a sinkhole is. It was not the actual sinkhole(s) at Moyer Rec Center.

I'm a new resident, getting ready to purchase a home here. I haven't seen any information about sink hole insurance for our houses. Do most people get the extra coverage? Thanks for the info!

We like it here and the Daily Sun too. It’s not “perfect” (especially some of the political nonsense) but no place on this earth is perfect. We got lucky when we stumbled into The Villages.

Don't get ahead of yourself with the kudos. If it wasn't for the advertisements, recreation schedule and little magazines I wouldn't even bother subscribing to this totally biased and one sided newspaper. Because of that I still subscribe to the Orlando Sentinel for some real news.
