I guess were moving on up? It is the move of having little white crosses on the yards to a rather tall religious statue of a child praying in front of a religious symbol. What is the next action to try to violate the deed restrictions when the home was purchased? It is degrading to the various responsible christian residents. To put these religious symbols on the same level as a pink flamingo, etc is really a lack of respect for the religion that is trying to be "advertised"?:ohdear:

An endless posted topic. Logic? People? Advertise a religion? Over and over the same illogical discussion. Little cross? We know reality, my cross is bigger than your cross so I am more holy than you. I saw one home with three crosses on his/her lawn.
The thought, the argument, the opinion seems to go through most threads. Law well it should apply to others. It should only apply when I fits my narrative.

Yes, it is also insulting to those of us who treat a Pink Flamingo as an important religious symbol.
Think about it. How many people have died because they worship the Pink Flamingo?

Another thread failing to focus on the center of the issue at hand. Has nothing to do with religious suppression. Everyone agreed to the deed restrictions when they purchased their home. The cross can be displayed in a window. No we are going to do battle because we are above what we contractually and legally agreed to. Keep beating the dead horse…SMH.

Its the deed: Adhere to it.
"Lawn Ornaments: lawn ornaments, or yard art, generally refers to manmade items located anywhere outside the structure or footprint of the home. However, pots and planters designed and constructed for plant use, are permitted so long as they are used for their intended purpose. The inclusion or attachment of flowers or plants to a man made ornament, not originally constructed for plant use, does not change the item from a lawn ornament to landscaping. The word "lawn" includes areas that are mulched, concreted, sodded, rocked, landscaped, bare earth or any other material outside the structure (footprint) of the home. The following is intended as a partial reference list of lawn ornaments: any man made statue or figure (INCLUDING: religious symbols, wind chimes, plastic or silk flowers, windmill, pinwheels, trains sets, deer, geese, flamingos or any other animal or human figures"

That is it in a nutshell. If you buy a home in most parts of the Villages you sign a deed restriction that says you will have no ornaments on your lawns or yards. People who put things like crosses and flamingos in their yard are violating the deed restrictions they signed. Why is that so hard to understand?

And to those .......... Lay off the digs about religion. Not nice. Not caring of those who are religious..
We do not need to be so ugly to others. Just report their inappropriate yard ornaments and wave to them down the pew...if you go. If you don't. That's o.k. too. I am not in charge of the universe. We will see later if we meet again.

My view is that this is a deed restriction issue, that I signed a covenant required when I bought my home here that I cannot display lawn ornaments. But I’m curious to understand the reasons for those violating the document we signed.
Are they so insecure about their religious beliefs that they feel that by making their personal issue public, it will give them a response from others that lets them feel that this feedback is what creates a true spiritual connection?
Or are they insecure not for issues of faith but rather their standing in the community that they feel by challenging the lawn ornament issue, they will be admired which in turn can soothe their ego?
Or are they people who, no matter what the issue, deliberately choose to do the opposite of expectation with no regard for support or feedback from others?
Or what are the other possibilities? I got a glimpse overhearing a conversation in which a little white cross/lawn ornament displayer was asked how they would feel about seeing displayed on lawns the symbols of other religions such as a Crescent for Moslems, a Star of David for Jews, the Universal symbol for Unitarians, a statue of Buddha, and more. The answer was that would not be the same thing. Why not? “Because we are a Christian nation!”

"Rules are Rules"......and yet:
How many golf carts actually stop fully at a stop sign? None of the ones I have followed in the last 10 years in the Villages.
How many violations of real estate signs do you see every week?
How many open house sign violations do you see every week?
How many yard sale/garage sale signs do you see every week?
How many violations of landscaping rules do you see every week?
I could go on with the list.
The little bitty cross does not threaten me or insult me. Actually, I am glad when I see them, along with American flags flying. Since I have no intention of selling my home anytime soon, I guess I am not concerned about supposed threats to the worth of my property. I guess bragging rights mean a lot more to some than others. My house is worth $???K ....big deal.
Just keep your dam* dog off my grass! Otherwise, my two cents says that when I see a personalization of homes in a neighborhood, I know someone lives there and the house is not just a rental.

I was told that the little white cross meant they loss someone. So death- not religion. Looking at it that way puts a whole new perspective.
Except in the case of this thread, this topic, it is very specifically to do with religion. There are people who put these on their lawns and proclaim "freedom of RELIGION" as their justification to break the rules. There is currently a lawsuit about it. And now that there is so much support for this one household that has chosen to break the rules and use "freedom of religion" as their excuse, there is a new, very decisively religious statue on another home that is getting a lot of heavy press.
All because people refuse to follow the rules of their particular village. You choose to live in a neighborhood that has the rule "no lawn ornaments" then you should not be given a free pass just because your lawn ornament has some connection with a religion.
And all the people supporting them should remember that when they side with the rulebreakers, they're hanging their banner on the side of anarchy with the name "religion" printed on the bottom.

This is about deed restrictions and really not about criticism of someone's faith.
If you move here, most will not be able to place lawn ornaments of any kind without permission from the Architectural Review Committee. If a person places ANYTHING in their yard that does not meet their approval, AND SOMEONE REPORTS THEM, then they will be asked to remove it, or put it under the eaves of their house. If they fail to do so, they open themselves to be fined.
I like this deed restriction. It is one of the reasons we chose to live here. We have had similar deed restrictions in the neighborhoods in Ohio where we lived.
It is my feeling that it makes for a nicer appearance and protects the property values of all.

Hmm, as much as I would like to agree with you, "nicer appearance" is in the eyes of the beholder. "Protects property values" seems to be contrary to fact today, also. Almost all homes in my neighborhood are personalized, meaning many yard ornaments, pots and other personal choices. No home put on the market this year has been there for very long. One that I know of, sold for over $600K that sold for about $500K last year. I have not seen anyone take a loss in my neighborhood. Apparently, those yard decorations had little effect on the market. I don't always find the same attraction toward some modifications that the owners sees, but I don't like yellow cars either.

Exactly. I don't like the "stepford wives" look in landscaping. I don't want to look around a neighborhood for a new home and think "okay - which green square do I want to own? The left one, the right one, the one in the middle, the one across the street - oh well who cares, they're all pretty much the same." My neighbors come in all shapes, sizes, colors, have all kinds of different accents, are from different countries with different cultures.
I LIKE knowing there are differences. I embrace differences. That's why I'm okay with my neighbors having landscapes that reflect those differences. Some folks just want everyone to be like everyone else. To me, that's boring; a monochromatic life bereft of visual stimulation.
That said, I moved to the neighborhood I live in now, in the Villages, partly because these things are acceptable here. The deed restrictions are not as strict. We still have rules and regs, but we have some wiggle room for personal touches. We aren't the Borg nor are we expected to decorate as if we were.

Why do people move to the Villages when they know you are prohibited from adding things to your landscape? Stay in your previous residence and put whatever you want. I really don't know why people think advertising their political, sports, religious junk in their yard is a beautification of the landscaping. It looks trashy, that's why there are restrictions.
