We closed on a home in St. Catherine's 2 weeks ago; we look forward to meeting every single one of you soon, especially the beer drinkers. Unable to move to TV until mid-September, however.

We've been on 4 lifestyle visits (is that a record?). We never had any issues with mosquitos. Does anyone have any comments on the need for a mosquito service at your home ?

The Villages comes down the streets every so often and sprays for them. I don't know of anyone that does their own control. Welcome.

Sumter County handles mosquito control very well. When their traps have more than a set number of mosquitoes, they send trucks out at night to spray.

Maybe if you live near water. I've been here 13 years and have yet to see a mosquito.
Love bugs in May and September and that's about it.

No mosquitoes here but the other day got a letter from Massey telling us how much we need their service for this.

Letter quickly found its way to our circular file.

Poor mosquitos.
Everyone trying to kill the poor little things, and they only want a little drink of blood!

If you live on a pond or preserve the mosquitoes are bad. We can not go outside in our yard at night without getting bit. People are correct about doing vector control and the Villages is better than outside the Villages. Mosquitoes seem to like to bite some people more than others, If you get mosquito bites where you live now it will be worse in Florida.

My lady friend lives in the village of Charlotte and the mosquitos are terrible. We cannot sit in her backyard swing and I got eaten alive sitting in a driveway a couple blocks away watching the 4th of July neighborhood fireworks.

Certain seasons, mosquitoes at dawn & dusk. Keep moving or wear spray. We are not on a pond. Sumter county does come around & spray but it doesn’t help much

Off topic: I’m in SC too! Will you be here fir a visit before Sept? Are you a member of the FB group?

Back on topic: I find that there are the little buggers, but not terrible. I should really get better at wearing protection! And I think that will be sufficient.

Live in Hawkins and as soon as the sun goes down, they begin their assault. The ones here are so large, you can feel them land. Back up north, you generally don't know they are bitting you until it is done. Here, you feel them land on you beforehand. Hawkins does have a lot of "Preserve,... i.e., swamp land."

Mosquitoes?

I'm from Minnesota, where mosquitoes are a fact of life (in those months, that is, where below-zero temperatures AREN'T a fact of life). Also horse flies, deer flies, gnats, no-see-ums, woodticks, ants, hornets, blackflies, Japanese ladybeetles, and probably quite a few other six- and eight-legged critters that chew on people for a living. I've lived in The Villages for most of a year now and the sum total of the bugs I've seen consist of five cockroaches (all dead--those bug people I hired do a good job), a few ants while I was out walking, a couple of flies that I didn't recognize, and one big-assed bee that sat on my golf cart window and stared at me for awhile before continuing on his appointed rounds.

Bug-wise, TV is heaven!

Mosquitoes. They seem to prefer certain people. Deet is a commonly used bite preventer
I am not a doctor but vitamin B1 seems to work. B vitamins are water soluble so overdoes is unlikely. It takes a fairly large dose of B1 for it to work.

Those black lights were the rage a few years ago. They kill mostly moths that are attracted to the light. They do not work for mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes breed in fresh water, traditional control are fish.

The local unseen mosquito sprayers take care of that in the early morning hours when the traps they set show a rise in them. I hold my breath this continues. There are those who are very concerned about the use of pesticides.

And WE ARE OFF....................

Nope. Unh uh. It is NOT worse in Florida. It was FAR worse in Ohio. This is nice here. I am a veritable gourmet ITEM for mosquitos and they bite me and I get all swollen and itchy. Little Bastards.

I am very glad that the unseen forces are keeping their numbers down. Thank you. Thank you.

we're just north of 466A...surrounded by preserves and retention ponds...unless you're out walking after sunset without bug spray there's no issue with mosquitoes, and we've never been attacked by hordes of mosquitoes....but we also don't eat a lot of bananas. I read somewhere a while back that bananas emit a chemical from your pores that those pesky little critters really seem to be attracted to (unfortunately I don't have the source of that)

now, as far as a lighted cigarette keeping those little buggers away, that's most likely a result of the mosquitoes understanding the dangers second hand smoke presents

bottom line, don't worry about it...if you want to go out in the evenings go to any of the 'squares' the large gathering will lower the odds that you'll be the one that gets bit

In a "light" vein...remember a few years back when the joke going around had it that an evening's entertainment for a redneck was a bug-zapping light and a six pack?

The mosquitos in Florida mostly go after people that drink a lot of beer. They are hops junkies! You can't blame them, or avoid them. They like a BUZZ!

Avon Skin So Soft works as a repellant
Used that fishing in Scotland in Midge season, and those little blighters are a curse. Kept them away. (Mostly!)
Another repellant is Brewers Yeast Tablets. 2-3 a day and after a couple of weeks you're good to go.

I live on a lake and have no problems. Don't allow water to collect in your plant pot basins or put out a bird bath with standing water and you should be fine. Sumter County does mosquito spraying at night. Been here 20 years and no problems, even when out at dusk.

I'm highly susceptible to mosquitos so I wear a wrist band that protects me from bites. That said, the # of mosquitos after dark are significant so that special treatment of your property might be in order. We've not taken this step as yet. This is interesting reading. They have monitored adult mosquito traps and there is mention of "vector" chickens who guard against encephalitis from mosquitoes and also insectivore fish.

Thoughts
+ I do agree that the mosquitos seemed to be attracted to some much more than others (e.g. my daughter and my "girl friend").
+ If I keep moving, I seem to be able to successfully evade the bugs.
+ I am surprised that more Villages residents don't fret spraying (but understand the incredibly effective effect it has in making evenings so pleasant).

Are You Ready For This - Sit Down & Fasten Your Seatbelt
It dawned on me, long ago (I grew up in Louisiana; also own in Maryland [now]), that my every exhalation seemed to be <the lure> for mosquitos. I was reminded of this in 2019/2020, here in TV. I would go to the squares and sit and listen to the music. That was in 2019 and toward the beginning of 2020.

Then it all changed - It just stopped!

Wearing a mask seemed to completely thwart the mosquitos' advance. I could be sitting "directly beside" other people (who were not wearing masks) These other people might be waving their arms about and grousing about being attacked. Not I; I felt as though I was in a protected bubble.

Go figure! BTW, I am quite serious. I think the mask, by stifling my exhalation, removed the mosquitos attraction.

We have lived in Charlotte for 2 years and the mosquitos are terrible after dusk. We have been in the Lake Deaton pool and at dusk they all seemed to come out and start biting.

Sumter county sends mosquito fogging trucks in the evening at about 10:00. My husband and I used to walk in the evening at that time and have been our when they are spraying. It is a very heavy fog and we have had to try to run home to avoid breathing in the spray. Even with the fogging mosquitos are a problem in Charlotte. We paid for terminix and it was a waste of money. They say they will come out and respray but they didn't and I dropped the service because when they did spray it didn't do anything.

The contact information for Sumter county mosquito abatement is Ph: 352-689-4400. The email is administrative.services@sumtercountyfl.gov.

At dusk you will get eaten alive if you live near the preserves or near water. I have been told by a landscaper that sprays for mosquitos not to waste you money.....if your neighbors don't use it then your yard and home area have just gotten bigger. Don't waste your money.

I think Massey Services must look at TOTV posts as they have recently started a "mosquito" service.

No doubt their next venture will be "dog poop removal".

Lack of availability of accommodations may have been the reason why you were denied a LS visit. Each visit, we had to give TV a range of dates that were acceptable to us. The 4th visit was made possible by a last-minute cancellation.

Seen very few mosquitoes here in over fourteen years. Some new folks will see dead insects on siding and around lights and think they are the biters but could be what people call "blind mosquitoes". They don't bite. They just die on your house and you have to sweep them off.

Google them.

I have NEVER seen the truck that stealthily comes in the night and kills mosquitoes.

Please don't start on pesticides being harmful. Real mosquitoes carry yucky stuff sometimes and they really cause some of us big itchy painful bites. Not allowed in lower paradise. ;)
