Now that we’ve taken care of the Indians and Braves, can we now look at the New York teams? Since I’m living in the South, many find the term Yankees offensive and a trigger word. And the Giants, well that can certainly be seen as offensive )

The result included prohibiting fans from wearing headdresses and face paint that “references or appropriates American Indian cultures and traditions.”
They are also reviewing the use of the Arrowhead Chop and drums as part of the stadium experience, though that exploration is still ongoing.

Now that's what I'm talking about. The Braves are a class organization and I pray that they don't concede to the woke group whose sole intention is to destroy our past and eventually our future. The American Indian nation has a proud history that should be celebrated, not diminished by these antics. Cleveland Guardians. What a sham!! We are becoming a nation of sheep.

Who cares about some stupid baseball team in Cleveland, of all places?
I'm more worried about the name of our country: "America", named for a Spanish imperialist.
If we must inhabit Orwell's nightmare, where history is continually edited by the "Ministry of Truth", maybe we ought to change our name to U.S.O. -- "The Union of Soviet Oceania".

Again - the best way to fight all this nonsense is to hit the owners where it hurts --- in the wallet. Don't go to the games and stop watching on TV etc .......of course easy for me to say as I have not watched a baseball game in 10 years. They owners have the right to do whatever they want and so do the fans.

It is awful we live in a time of such political correctness. I always felt that the name and logo always represented the strength and character of the American Indian. It was a compliment to them and not disparaging in any way. The same for the Atlanta Braves. I do see the argument for changing the name of the Washington Redskins, that could be considered offensive. People need to chill out, hopefully this political correctness and cancel culture will eventually die out. If not thankfully I will not be here to see the damage and destruction it will do to this country.

From Webster....A cowboy: a man, typically one on horseback, who herds and tends cattle, especially in the western US.
A patriot: a person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors.
Neither of those names represents a race of a person. Using a slang term (yes Indian is a slang term) to name a sports team, and then use a stupid image to display that slang term time has come and gone. Would you be good with the Florida "Whities"or New Jersey Jews or better yet Connecticut Hymies????

Well here is a little more of a scientific sampling. From a Native American news site and the Washington Post:
Two major studies show that while activists are busy suing teams, many Indians take no offense. A survey of Indians conducted in 2002 for Sports Illustrated found that 81 percent don't think high school or college teams should drop Indian nicknames. Asked about the Redskins, 75 percent said the name doesn't offend them. Last year, the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Election Survey found that 90 percent of Indians did not consider "Redskins" offensive."
Column: Indians don't care about Indian mascots (https://www.indianz.com/News/2005/11/17/column_indians.asp)
Nine in 10 Native Americans say they are not offended by the Washington Redskins name, according to a new Washington Post poll that shows how few ordinary Indians have been persuaded by a national movement to change the football team’s moniker.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/new-poll-finds-9-in-10-native-americans-arent-offended-by-redskins-name/2016/05/18/3ea11cfa-161a-11e6-924d-838753295f9a_story.html
But as the virtual signaling is now at warp speed, I am sure it has its desired effect into instilling the sense of victimhood in younger Native Americans.
It is a shame because the one ethnicity that most people brag about who can is Native American. I am 3%. I wish it was much more.

Growing up, the word "indian" would bring to mind an image of a strong profile against a western sky. It would make me think of a beautiful woman with her hair in braids making a meal by an open fire. It would make me think of children running about in moccasins and beaded leather clothing. It would bring to mind strong athletic men running and shooting arrows to bring home their supper. I would think of a strong group of people who had withstood the difficult life of the frontier. Every thing about the word indian was positive in my mind.
I was in my late twenties on a company trip to Arizona when I met the first person I knew to be a native American. I have not known many people who are native Americans.
It is hard for me to grasp why all this is happening. I really do not think it is doing anybody much good.

I'm sure my hometown team, the KC Chiefs, will soon be in the crosshairs of the Intentionally Offended. But, I'm equally sure the dimwitted leftists have no clue as to how the team name originated. Lamar Hunt, the original owner of the Chiefs (formerly Dallas Texans), named the team to honor Kansas City mayor H. Roe Bartle, whose nickname was "Chief." Of course, over the years there have been native American references: Arrowhead stadium, the tomahawk chop, drums, Warpaint the horse, etc. Nope...all WAY too offensive for the pantywaisted culture crew.
Maybe all sports teams should simply be assigned a letter designator. Team A, Team X, Team RR, etc. Plus, all fans attending a game at a stadium must dress in nothing but bubble wrap.

Minnesota is a known hot spot of Scandinavian culture, and because of this the team's first GM, Bert Rose, chose the name Vikings to represent the many people of Minnesota and the surrounding area that could trace their heritage back to Scandinavia.

WOW! You completely miss the point. Yes Vikings (pirates) were of Scandinavian decent, but not all Scandinavians were Vikings (pirates). To use you analogy all German's were Nazis, and all Italians are mobsters.
On the other side the slang term "Indian" refers to ALL native Americans. There's the point....Indian is a slang term to define a total group of people based on their race.

You know it’s just a word & the word Indians isn’t going to make a difference in any bodies life. Did this get a name for someone. So what did the name change do by calling them “Guardians”, nothing so what happened by doing this? They’re still the “Indians”, Red Skins, Savages, True Americans. Can’t believe the name Indians really made a difference in a baseball team. It was just a word!

Why be afraid of your heritage?
Who says I am?.....FYI my heritage is German and English. I have Native American relatives via marriage.
Also....seems you are very much OK defining a symbol of someone else's heritage as a toothy smiley face with a feather sticking out of the back of their head..........

Cleveland Indians owners caved in so fast on this one....they should be renamed the Cleveland Wimps.
But....not all is lost! Notice that they retained one-half of the name for posterity.....In-DIANS are now the Guar-DIANS! Maybe this was some kind of subliminal protest.
Now....who is the next target of the PC police.......the Cleveland "Browns?"

Sorry that I find all the hubbub on both sides a bit silly and sad. Both sides have valid points of view basses on background and perspective, but imho it is not worth getting your knickers in a twist over. "A rose by any other name still smells as sweet." Regardless of name my favorite teams will still be my favorite teams.
Peace!

Wonder how the native Americans feel....they are losing their identity.
I believe they were proud, not offended. Political correctness gives me a pain in the…..

It didn't seem negative to me. I do not understand this at all. We grew up in very German Columbus, Ohio and we named our firstborn Gretchen. We chose the name because we felt the German heritage and yet some folks told us her name was too "dutchy".
I don't think they liked our choice. Her name brought to mind to us, the festivities where people wore dirndles and lederhosen and danced the polka and it brought to mind the dozens of families we knew with four syllable last names that were German and it reminded us of the German language we heard still at family gatherings. Our church; Evangelical and Reformed for one of us, was called German Lutheran back then. We had several family members who worked at one of the large breweries that were a solid part of the economics of the south end. Naming our daughter Gretchen was a way to say we belong to the tribe of German people who live this life in Columbus, Ohio.
I don't think if we saw a person of Irish or Italian descent wearing a dirndle to a costume party it would be anything but a compliment to our heritage. I just don't understand any of this. I have tried so hard to see it from the other side. I do not understand.
We Americans are a wonderful mixture of many cultures and ethnic groups. I can feel it very strongly here in The Villages.

Whoever started "political correctness" should be banished from the country. And now, instead of the Washington Redskins we have the illustrious name, the Washington Football Team. How original.

First, when you answer a question with a question it demonstrates you do not know the answer.
You're fun at parties, I'm sure.
Second, there are no Vikings. The term refers to pirates from Scandinavia who operated in the 8th-11th century.....or 1300 years ago......but by all means keep trying!
I guess someone should alert Tampa Bay's NFL football team ownership that there are no Buccaneers.

Their name was always a cultural misnomer. Columbus called them indians because he thought he had sailed to the indian continent.
He may have been dyslexic because he wanted to call the beautiful port puerto rico and the island 🏝️ to our south san juan.
Such are the vagaries of history ⌚.

Florida State
Florida State has always worked closely with the Seminoles, who give them permission to use the name. They make sure nothing is offensive to the Seminoles. For instance, Chief Osceola, who rides out with the flaming spear must always be a male...that's one of their stipulations.

well if the majority of the opinions here are counter to yours, maybe you should look in the mirror
meaning what? if I have an opinion different from yours, then I must be wrong and should be ostracized?
if the majority of the opinions here are counter to mine, then it means this forum is populated with the same type of xenophobic, closed minded people who post here to have their opinions reinforced, not to intelligently consider others. like watching Fox News 24/7.

They will pick on the Chiefs next. America become the land of the offended
The result included prohibiting fans from wearing headdresses and face paint that “references or appropriates American Indian cultures and traditions.”
They are also reviewing the use of the Arrowhead Chop and drums as part of the stadium experience, though that exploration is still ongoing.
As they should.

Disgusting and disgraceful.
Over the years have become friends with several people who consider themselves to be native Americans.
They think this is a stupid thing to do.
Wonderful and the right thing to do.
