We bought our new home about a year ago and currently find ourselves surrounded by little biting insects. They look like ants with wings and we would love suggestions about how to get rid of them.

The right thing to do is catch one and put it in a glass jar so you can identify what it is.
Cooperative extension is helpful if the internet can't. What to do depends on what it is.
Most insects etc are local. It is unlikely you are the only one in your area with this issue.

We have Massey and the insects. I think Massey sprays a little water around and claims it’s treatment, probably that’s all they are allowed to do. I have to do my own insect control. Same with snails. This year I have had an infestation… one treatment and much fewer afterwards. I still pay Massey but I wonder why.

[QUOTEMI still pay Massey but I wonder why.[/QUOTE]

I have Massey service. Not sure what they spray during their regular service - but once I saw a couple ants outside, by my slider - I called them - they came out and sprayed - and I have seen nothing since.
My recommendation - get a service with one of the big companies and as soon as you see anything - just a few of the critters - call them and have them treat it - to avoid it turning into a big problem.

Call Massey. They will treat your home inside and the perimeter. They will treat the perimeter quarterly. We had this done before moving into our new home.

Spray water? Really! Why in the world slander a company without proof of any kind. This is how deadly rumors get started. Yet you still pay them. Unreal. Just thinking how ridiculous this complete statement would sound in court after they sued you for defamation. Childish.

My guess and only a guess is termites.

I use Massey and have been extremely pleased with their pest service at $45 a quarter. If I see even one bug (ant, roach, anything) inside my home between treatments, they come out that day and spray. I am amazed at the lack of pests in my home compared to the continuous battle my mother fought when I grew up in Florida.

Are you finding them on the house frame? I wonder if the are what people call "blind mosquitoes". Here is an old thread about them;

https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/do-yourself-210/blind-mosquitoes-other-bugs-house-169782/?highlight=Blind+mosquitoes

If so, just use a broom and sweep them off.

We had them about 5 years ago. It was insane and creepy. It mating season. I guess that when they are so active. Anyway, call an exterminator. We did and haven’t had them since. So I guess whatever they did made them stop coming in the house. Good luck!

No seeums are bad this year. Also there is a VERY SMALL black fly that can bite that is annoying this year. We have had a lot of rains and some homes keep their irrigations running so standing waters are a breeding ground.

I don’t believe termites bite people unless you are made of wood. Silly question perhaps, but do you have pets? Fleas would multiply quickly and bite anything they can. I use Dean’s and don’t have an insect problem. Good luck. I hope you can get to the bottom of the situation and get it under control.

Weigh your options carefully. Unfortunately, the first thing Villagers think of is blasting their homes with insecticide. They seem to forget that if insecticides are killing bugs, that same insecticide is probably harming humans as well. Are you spending a lot of time outside? Maybe it's the time of day that you are out and about. Sunrise and sunset are the worst for insects. A little bit later in the morning and most of them disappear. And since you say you have a new house, maybe you should consider adding a screened lanai or birdcage. This way you can enjoy the outdoors without getting bitten. Good luck, and enjoy your new home.

Not many mosquitoes here. They spray insecticide at night...WHEN the traps they set for them get to a certain level. They also have groups of chickens around the county they use to monitor for encephalitis and other mosquito borne sickness. I am so very glad that I don't see those huge roaches that Florida was famous for and the Fireants are cussed mean critters too. If you see a small sandhill in your yard, get the pesticide. If you disturb them, they attack as a team and their stings last for two weeks and burns and itches. Wasps don't seem to be interested in biting people. I just knock their nest down when I see them mud dobbing on our porch. Hornets are a different story. Mean little buggers and their bite really hurts.

We had some small bugs as you described. Terminex came out and put some white paste under our sinks and in crevasses and that was the end of it. We have Terminex and our pest control person is very efficient, professional and they come out as often as you need. Initially when we bought our house we had bugs all around especially on our bricked patio. Now I never see any bugs. They come quarterly but will come out anytime if I need them.

More than most folks want to know about blind mosquitoes, (From University of Florida)

Two important things; They don't bite and insecticides are effective sprayed where you swept them down from.

I like them, at least the idea of pest control. Massey does come out and talk any time I call them. But … my problem is after they do a treatment I still have a lot of bugs - many kinds, crawling, flying, outside the home but not inside. I am at Mallory not near ponds or preserves either. When I do a treatment there is much fewer. And I am a total newbie.
As far as reputation goes, they have to earn it first.

Did you forget we live in a country that has free speech? Or have you been brainwashed?

When you pay for service you expect to get something. I hope what Massey is doing is helpful, but it is definitely not enough. I have to get rid of the rest of the bugs myself. So that’s what I do.

It is not defamation when it is true. I am reporting my personal experiences.

Probably Noceums little bugs that are hard to see. Hence the name.
Very active at dusk . Annoying and not much you can do about them. We're in Fenney and haven't
had any here.
We moved here from. Homosassa and they were terrible there.

First you must identify "exactly" what kind of bug it is. I had flying ants in our master bath and couldn't figure where I was getting them. I re-caulked the corner tub and that seem to get them out of the house. If you're near water or a swamp-like area you will get what we call noseeums. There's also another type of bug that's a non-biting mosquito you'll find around freshwater lakes in Florida. Our but people said they don't treat for "flying" insects. The University of Florida, Gainesville has an extension in Ocala that might be able to help identify and remedy your problem.

You might look up aquatic midges and see if that's what they might be.

When we first moved into our place there were a fair amount of critters: some cockroaches, rather large snails in the mornings in the lanai, some small black flies, etc. Also heard the scampering of little feet every now and again in the attic. We arranged a full-service annual contract with Florida Pest Control and they are as good as their word: bugs and snails totally gone except for three dead cockroaches I found in the garage about a week after I retained them, no more attic noises, etc. The odd lizard manages to make it into the lanai but that just keeps the cat entertained. Plus they respond quickly when we do call them (which is not often), and they keep the lawn fertilized, weeds sprayed, etc.

Not having experience with Florida pests before this I did not know what to expect. But I have absolutely no quarrel with Florida Pest Control. I'll be renewing with them when the time comes this fall.
