View Full Version : Asking a favor

Hello, Dear TOTV friends; I am writing to ask a favor which is sort of for myself, since it will make me happy because of making my daughter happy, but it is mainly a favor for her; I hope you'll bear with me as I explain. For the past 5 weeks I've been camped in the hospital with my 28 year old daughter, Sarah Meghan Steinberg (she goes by her middle name, Meghan). We had first taken her to Chicago for surgery on her thought-to-be benign spinal tumor; but it was found to be leukemic cells, related to her history of leukemia for which she underwent a stem cell transplant from her brother five years ago, and which had been in complete remission for 5 years until now; so, all of us, including the surgeon, were blindsided.
We were looking to the right and life came at us from the left, as sometimes happens.
Then back in Louisville (where she lives) in the hospital here, they found leukemic cells in her spinal fluid; thankfully, her blood and bone marrow, though, are still normal and so this is all very strange and rare, say the doctors. She is now going through chemo and we are expecting all good to come, although future treatment course remains to be determined as we go along; right now she is very sick from the chemo and I am by her side. Bone marrow and blood are still clear of leukemia; it was found in her spinal tumor and in her spinal fluid, only.
She will beat it. Her middle name came from the heroine, Meghan, of the book and miniseries from the 1980s, 'The Thornbirds', who had such resolve, grit, and courage; and, as it turned out, we see as Meghan has gone through this illness starting 5 years ago, that we chose the right name for her. She has always shown such contempt and fearlessness for leukemia; with the attitude of 'is that all you've got?' So, how can we be anything but strong, also?
It is unknown when I will be back in my beloved TV home other than possibly for short stays to see my wonderful hubby, Doug, who is also traveling back and forth between here and TV to see us.
Now, for the favor I am asking: If any of you want to do something that would make Meghan very, very happy, it would be for any of you who are on Facebook to become a Facebook 'friend' of her non-profit foundation - called 'Meghan's Mountain', which provides direct patient support to adult and pediatric cancer patients - at ' I support Meghans Mountain ' (that is the name of the Facebook page - just put that phrase, 'I support Meghan's Mountain', in the search box on Facebook and the link for the page should come up, and then you can click on the link to become a 'Friend' -and, of course, there is no cost to do this).
[Meghan started her foundation after her original illness with leukemia in 2005, and 'Meghan's Mountain' provides holiday gifts and parties in cancer wards, washer/dryers for families in cancer units, money for indigent patients for transportation to/from treatment, exercise equipment for patients in cancer wards, summer camp designed especially for children with cancer, etc. - the 'extras' that there is often no regular funding for, but which make such a difference to patients and their families. Also, as a part of her foundation work, Meghan takes calls to go to hospitals to visit newly diagnosed cancer patients, especially teens and young adults, to encourage them with her own story, to help them believe that they, too, can get well again. Meghan has put so much effort into this foundation, and this year alone, largely through a fundraiser 'roast' of former U of L basketball coach, Denny Crum, who is a dear friend of Meghan's and is a member of the board of directors of 'Meghan's Mountain', has raised nearly $150,000 for direct patient support.]
Meghan is wanting to see her foundation's Facebook page membership go to over 1000, and it is almost there; and that would make her very, very happy and would give her a huge emotional lift which she could use right now. I'd love to see her membership go way up, and thought the power of you on TOTV might be the way to help that happen. (Her website related to her foundation is www.meghansmountain.com) If you become a 'friend' on her foundation's Facebook page, it would be great if you could also leave a brief message wishing her well on her foundation's 'wall'.
Thanks in advance to any of you who can help Meghan reach this goal. Freeda

First let me say that I am so sorry for all your troubles. I just returned from Indiana where I sat with my daughter through her 38 year old husband's surgery for bladder cancer. I am a firm believer in prayer and I will keep both these young people, and their families in my prayers. I hope this post is not offensive to anyone, but as a hospital chaplain, my first response when troubled is to place it at God's feet. They will both make it!!! :boxing2: :boxing2: :a040:

Hi Freeda, I don't know what number I am, but I joined a while ago when you first posted this on Facebook. I'm now a friend of Jerry's so that I can receive updates and communicate with him also.
I wrote to Meghan a while ago wishing her the best and that I was praying for her and all of you. This is a hard battle but it can be won, and I too believe that prayers are all powerful and we will continue to support this cause with all that we have!!!
Good Luck, and please keep us posted.

Thank you, Jann, and everyone who have joined Meghan's Mountain's Facebook page; and Jann, your idea of forwarding this to your list as well is, well, wonderful; needless to say, you have me, who am already an emotional basketcase, in tears.
Some of you have asked in your messages on Meghan's Mountain's Facebook page if you can donate to it, which is a nonprofit charitable foundation; and while that was not my intention in my original post, I am of course glad for any sources that go to her cause, as I've seen the joy she brings to others through it. [It is wonderful and humbling to be in awe of your child's accomplishments. I think that it is not just what we do in shaping our children that is why they turn out the way they do; but that they come to us as already amazing creations, and we are just given the honor of raising and caring for them].
I know that on the 'info' (or similar name) link of the 'I Support Meghan's Mountain' Facebook page there is an address where donations can be sent; and there may be info on making donations on her foundation's website, www.meghansmountain.com . It is an IRS-approved nonprofit organization. (Her father, Jerry Steinberg, is a retired attorney and has devoted the bulk of his retirement time to helping Meghan with her foundation; he helps with the administrative side of the foundation, and if you want to call him his phone # is 502-468-0630).
But, again, thanks so much just for your 'joining'. When Meghan wakes up enough from her grogginess, she will be so happily surprised and touched just to have met her 1000 mark, and as she watches the numbers grow.

Your Meghan is quite a young woman. She has created a website that showcases her love and concern for other individuals fighting cancer; and, in addition to that, raised a lot of money for others fighting leukemia and other blood cancers. Meghan has given of herself her time, her prayers, and concern to others when she could have been hanging out at the mall or doing others things not connected to other cancer patients. What a girl! What a heroine! I was very happy to go to Facebook and sign on as a member for Meghan. I know you are very proud of her. She will be in my prayers.

Thanks to all of you for your kindness to Meghan; she had such a surprised look of delight today when she realized how much her Facebook numbers had gone up over the past few days.
There is something very tender about all of you, to take the time to reach out in kindness to a young woman you don't know just to provide some needed shoring up and comfort, and I wanted you to know how appreciated it is and that it is working. I think it's part of what is special about the people who are attracted to The Villages and the sense of community not only among us, but also caring about others.

CLIMBING ANOTHER MOUNTAIN
UPDATE ON OUR MEGHAN
First and most importantly, a special thank you to all those that sent
emails, cards, gifts and prayers. Each one touched Meghan in a very special
way and gave her strength. Because of what Meghan is going through I hope
you will accept this as a personal thank you...I know it is now impossible
for her to send thank you's. Know that each of you are in her heart.
Meghan is now home and resting. The chemo and tests have truly worn her
out. While she does get out occasionally she has spent the vast majority
of the time sleeping or resting. But she is home.
Before we left the hospital we had three important tests, an MRI,
spinal tap and full body scan. I am happy to report that there are no signs of
additional tumors and that her tumor and spinal fluids are now free of
leukemic cells...Meghan is in remission.
We go back for another spinal tap on November 11 to make sure the cells
are still not present and to inject some more chemo into the spinal fluid
to give her added protection. While the leukemic cells in the tumor or
"dead" they may elect to radiate the tumor to get rid of it once and for all.
If the tests show Meghan is still in remission our oncologist and
Seattle will tell us what plan B will be. We do know that at some point we will
be flying to Seattle to talk with the doctor's on what alternatives we have
to "kick Leuky out " of Meghan's system once and for all.
Meghan has asked some of her advisory board members to meet with the
organizations that will be beneficiaries of your generosity at our fundraiser.
They will come up with ideas for Meghan's consideration for direct patient
care. While I strongly suggested that we put our foundation on hold till
Meghan has completed all of her treatments, Meghan said , "my brothers and
sisters cannot wait for me to reach my mountaintop....we must never stop
lighting there's". So I or Meghan will keep you up to date on our donations.
Finally, Meghan has asked that I mention the loss of her Aunt Sue
Morris to cancer. A wonderful, loving lady who devoted her entire life to her
children and grandchildren. She was one hell of a fighter who never gave up
until the end. She will always remain in our hearts and will be one more
reason why we must never stop lighting mountains. We also ask that you
continue to keep Josh Sweitzer in your prayers as he climbs his mountain against
cancer.
For our Meghan, for all those who seek but one thing..life without
cancer..let us together never stop lighting mountains.
God bless and we will keep you up to date on Meghan's progress.

Wow, you all have taken my breath away. I have been away from TOTV for most of the past few weeks, due to my daughter Meghan Steinberg's (28 years old, of Louisville, KY) continued treatment. I just got on here and saw the recent messages, above, about Meghan; and realizing how kind and compassionate you all are to keep thinking of my daughter, Meghan, even when I'd been away from TOTV, well, it has me in tears and overwhelmed, so grateful for your caring spirits. I have no doubt that the well wishes you sent played a role. I think that I temporarily have a bit of something like 'post-traumatic stress syndrome' from this ordeal, and the exhaustion of 'hospital living', over the past few months, so tears seem to come easily right now.
Meghan went home from the hospital on October 18, after having extensive chemotherapy. I will never forget one of the nights when she was in some of the worse recovery phase from the chemo, I had just seen, too much, her suffering with headache and throat pain (from severe sores in her throat caused by the chemo) and nausea, and as I laid with her in her hospital bed massaging her head, just trying to provide a little comfort, watching the nurse instill yet more medications for pain and nausea, and looking at Meghan's twisted little suffering face, I just could not stop the tears, it was all so sad and seemed so unfair. The nurse came over to me after Meghan was again sedated, and hugged me tight, and said, "I know it is so hard to see this; but she is going to get better. You just have to keep thinking of that." Thank dear G_d for compassionate nurses.
Meghan returned for outpatient MRI's and lumbar punctures, to find out whether the chemo had killed the leukemic cells that were in a 'cluster' in one of her spinal nerves and that were in her spinal fluid. We were all on pins and needles for the next few days to hear the results at her next visit to her oncologist. One of those nights before the office visit, I had the dream that I had had repeatedly in 2005, when Meghan had her original battle with leukemia. In my dream, she was in the mouth of a lion, and I was running up to it to try to free her, and then I would wake up. I knew that this office visit would be one of those potentially life-changing 'crucial conversations', and more than anything else, I just dreaded the thought of having to to see Meghan 'bear up', bite her lip, and have to 'be strong' yet one more time; I just didn't want her to have to hear, and find the courage to deal with, any more bad news. So much was on the line. When Dr. Kommor walked in, he looked at us all and with a twinkle, and a tear, in his eyes, said, "Let me just say from the start, this is all good news." All of the tests showed only dead cancer cells, and no additional areas of cancer. And in that one sentence he relieved her dad and me from the worst fear a parent can have. Meghan will have a little more treatment, as a precaution against any more recurrence, but she is in complete remission, again, and the hope is that it is for life.
Parents, love your kids every day, and hug them every chance you get. I am so, soooo blessed; I know that there are so many parents who would give anything to be in my place. I hate hate hate cancer. Do everything you can to maintain your and your family's health, and to lessen the risk of having to deal with this beast of a disease.
The gift I have received from Meghan's illness, beginning in 2005, is that my priorities in life got crystal clear, very quickly. I just decided that every day that my loved ones were here on this earth, it was going to be a great day, no matter what else was going on. So many things that I had allowed to concern me in the past became unimportant; and now I am happier and live with gratitude every day.
Please accept the thanks from a grateful mother to you who reached out in kindness to my Meghan with your love and strength; you each made a difference to her, and to me.
Thanks for caring about this young woman, whom you have never even met in person, although I think you probably feel that you know her spirit. Thanks for caring enough to spend some of your time to send your thoughts, prayers, and energy; and to help, to my way of thinking, save a life. You have blown me away, again, dear TOTV friends.

CLIMBING ANOTHER MOUNTAIN
UPDATE ON OUR MEGHAN
My last email indicated tests showed Meghan's body clear of
leukemic cells after chemotherapy. That stands as of today. Unfortunately Meghan
went back in the hospital due to severe headaches following a spinal tap.
She is now home resting, getting out when possible, but still trying to
recover from her original hospitalization. Fighting cancer is not easy no matter
how strong you may be. Meghan has asked that I devote the rest of this
email to what she loves the most...touching those climbing mountains like her.
Meghan says..."Cancer or no cancer..I can never stop lighting
mountains for my brothers and sisters in there fight for life."
OUR 2nd 2010 DISTRIBUTION TO LIGHT MOUNTAINS
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE
JAMES GRAHAM BROWN CANCER CENTER
$18,000.00
Meghan has always had a deep appreciation for Dr. Roger Herzig and his
staff for there work in stem cell transplantation. Unfortunately there is
never enough money available for direct patient care. So at Meghan's
suggestion, a group individuals met at the Brown last week to see how we can best
serve the patients, many of whom are indigent and lack sufficient
resources in there fight for life against cancer.
One of the 'items" for bidding at our fundraiser was to help the
patients and there families at the Brown and Kosair Children's Hospital.
Meghan explained that there was no item to bid on, just the knowledge that
children and adults would benefit from the monies raised and explained how she
had used funds in the past. Two wonderful families, the Trager foundation
(Republic Bank) and the Unruh family (Unruh Charitable Foundation) each bid
$15,000. While we had that amount of money for each institution we added
$3,000 more to the Brown in order to cover immediate needs.
At the meeting besides myself...Dr. Roger Herzig, Chief and Director
of the Blood & Marrow Program at the Brown and member of our advisory
board...Mary Casey, member of our advisory board..Shelley Trager Kussman on
behalf of the Trager family and member of our advisory board, Jeannie Unruh
(the Unruh Charitable Foundation) on behalf of the Unruh family....Heather
Falman, Asst Director of Development, Ashley Nelson, Brown Quality
Coordinator and member of our advisory board, Leslie Lauterwasser, RN, BMT Program
Clinical Manager and Barbara Steele, RN, who works hand in hand with patients
who are financially unable to meet the needs of cancer treatments. We are
so thankful for there input and help...without these wonderful people we
could not achieve Meghan's dreams.
With Meghan's approval , because she understands the needs of cancer
patients, we are buying a much needed blanket warmer with mobile dolly
($5886.00)...two wall mounted otoscopes ($1400.00), three recliners for "all
day" clinic patient rooms where patients remain for treatment all
day($6000.00), money to be used for gas cards, cab rides and lodging (there is an
agreement worked out with two places) for those who cannot afford such but whose
needs must be met in order to receive needed medical care ($3000.00), pill
boxes with 7day/4 time slots to assist cancer patients in proper
medication when home ($1410.00) and digital themometers to be given to patients to
monitor body temperature while at home ($305). All of these expenditures
will directly benefit patients in there fight for life.
This is our second distribution this year. Our first was to Indian
Summer Camp ($15,000.00) so that kids fighting cancer can have one week of
free camp to be kids once more. Meghan has requested we continue to make
distributions so that her brothers and sisters will find there way to the top of
there mountain.
Remember..over 90% of our money raised stays in Kentucky...when you
donate always check to see what percentage of money raised is spent in
Kentucky on those fighting cancer.
YES, MEGHAN, THERE WILL BE CHRISTMAS AT KOSAIR
While at the meeting I was asked if Meghan was going to do Christmas
at Kosair. Each Christmas morning Meghan took Santa and Mrs. Claus to each
child at Kosair and presented them with a present. Meghan then went back
to Kosair in the evening for a special Christmas dinner for the patients,
their families and the nursing staff on the oncology floor. I told everyone
that because we do not know where Meghan will be on Christmas (Louisville or
Seattle ) or how she will feel, we could not plan that day. Mary Casey
(who always handled the dinner part), Shelley Trager Kussman and Jeannie Unruh
decided that yes, Meghan's Christmas will continue even if Meghan cannot
be there. We just contacted Santa and Mrs Claus who will also be present.
So the children at Kosair will have a special Christmas this year as they do
each year thanks to some wonderful people whose hearts are filled with
love like Meghan's. Thank you Mary, Shelley and Jeannie..maybe it will be a
special Christmas..let us all pray our Meghan will be there also for the
children she loves so much.
DO YOU REALLY KNOW HOW TO LOVE A CANCER PATIENT ?
MAKE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON SPECIAL FOR THEM
Often we don't know what to do when our close friends are going
through cancer. Let me give you the needed answer. A phone call of love to see
how they are doing. And if they are up to it, just ask if you and/or some
other friends can come over to spend an hour or two with them. Ask if they
are up to going out and if so what they would like to do. Cancer patients
during treatment don't always have limitations 24/7. There are times when
they can use that visit or that company to a movie, coffee house or
restaurant. So think about how you would feel if you were in their shoes....make this
holiday special for you and for them...pick up that phone and light the
mountain for the one whose friendship you cherish. The one who can use your
love and friendship this holiday season. No cancer patient should ever have
to climb their mountain alone.
WE ASK FOR YOUR CONTINUED PRAYERS
Meghan and I ask for your continued prayers for our good friends,
Josh Sweitzer, son of Dr. Steve & Helen Sweitzer, and Patrick McSweeney,

As this thread halted just before I joined TOTV, this is the first time I've seen this. Joined, better late than never, and I think I'm #1136. All the best and much success to your Beautiful Megan!
