rt 13 Delaware

coming from New England, has anyone taken rt 13 through Delaware? it seems like an alternative to rt 95 that is a nightmare through Maryland, Washington and virginia.

We actually head towards Harrisburg (PA) and go south through Gettysburg (nice drive) to Virginia, avoids all of the Phila, Washington dc and Baltimore areas. It has been a while and I do not remember all the route number, but I am sure you get the idea.

been there, done that.. for me it is about 4 hours longer. I still do it once in a while... it looks like I can pick up rt13 after I cross the Delaware-memorial bridge. it takes me all the way thru Delaware to the Chesapeake bay tunnel bridge. and then I pick up rt 95. it looks like I am almost past Richmond va which is good

I moved to Va Beach from RI a few years ago, and drove Rt 13 (Eastern Shore) back and forth all the time. Excellent route BUT getting to I-95 is not simple from there. If you go back north on I-64 to get to 95 (at Richmond) you are backtracking way too much and I-64 is almost always a disaster itself. You can go through the country but I don't know the exact route. But, anything is better than going through DC for sure!! Even in the middle of the night it's bad, that's when they seem to do all their road construction. Good luck!

Looks to be 96 miles from Virginia Beach to Emporia/I95 with an estimated drive-time of an hour and three quarters.

We drive NE to TV at least once a year. the time of day and the day of the week when we hit the Baltimore DC area determines what route we take. We have had good luck driving north or south going through Delaware to route 301/50 between the Delaware Memorial Bridge and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Not many lights, they have been removed, and a bypass has been put in since i was driving that regularly in the late 70s. . .

Having done the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel a couple of times, and always got hung up in Norfolk, such that it slowed us down too much, along with lights on rt 13. . .

We leave NE early morning 3-4 AM and visit relatives on the VA/NC border. On a Friday, its always slow on 495 and south of DC, never fails. . going Delaware we minimize 495 and get through DC before noon but still hit traffic south of DC

Am looking to try 301 south in MD/VA between Annapolis MD and Bowling Green VA, just to avoid the jam south of DC at all hours of the day. . . not sure as it looks like the potential for alot of lights, but might be the same time and alot easier drive than 20/30 mph constant stop and go on 95/495

Take US50 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to US301 South in Crofton MD. US301 takes you over the Potomac River. When south of Fort AP Hill, take VA207 to the I95. You enter I95 just north of King's Dominion Amusement Park. It is an easy ride and avoids all the congestion of the DC metro area.

We have a house in Delaware. We come down numerous times throughout the year. Take Rt1 south to Dover. It splits to Rt 13 or Rt 113. They both will take you to Pocomoke MD where Rt 13 S takes you to 3Bay bridge tunnel. Once over the bridge take 58 West to Emporia,VA then 95 S. Many times we jump off 95 @ Santee Sc and go west to 301,just a thought.

I leave from eastern Mass and take I-95 to I-287 in NY over Tappan Zee, then I-78 onto I-81. In VA I take I-66 to Rte 17 to I-95 in Fredericksburg. From there its I-95 all the way to I-287 at Jacksonville, then I-10 to Rte 301 south to SR-326 west to I-75 south to CR-44 east. This route adds about 90 miles versus I-95 all the way, but could save you hours of aggravation!,!

Toll on the bay bridge, then terrible traffic on the VA Beach side, interstate 64 is busy, busy.

Take 81 to 77 to 26 to 95. I just cam down from Vermont. I took the north way to 88 to Binghamton. I was in Roanoke Va the first night. Great route

We lived in Virginia Hampton Roads area and would go up Rt 13 every month to Dover, De. There are a lot of speed traps between Dover and the CBBT. And also on Rt 58 to Emporia, Va.

Post #9 seems to be the route you need - taking 58 over to Emporia where you are just a few miles from the VA/NC border! Less expensive gas in Skippers, VA, too!

I agree with this summary and follow the same approach as this poster when traveling to/from NE. RT 13 is a great road these days from Wilmington to 301 (much improved from yesteryear). Commenting on last paragraph above: 301S into MD and VA can be a nightmare (traffic lights!) during the day and the ONE LANE (each way) Gov. Harry Nice Bridge across the Potomac is a HUGE bottleneck. I did this route a few weeks ago because of DC traffic and will not do so again during daylight hours. It’s getting to the point where the 2 hours or so through NYC metro area and DC/ Baltimore areas have to be done at night or out of normal traffic times. No easy alternatives.

200 to Callahan from I95 N of Jacksonville. Pick up 301 s at Callahan.
Also 301 eastern shore MD to Richmond bypass (295?) To 95 S of richmond

Didn't the Rt 113 by-pass resolve that issue? That's what friends use because they tow their car on the back of their RV.

From MA, we made roanoke by noon going through DE. and VT isn't that far away heading to FL
