Moving into TV in early September .. looking for some opinions

Hi all, bought my house this week in Citrus Grove and will be closing and moving into the house in early September. I have a few questions and am looking for opinions. I am sure I will come up with others but...

1. Need to buy a washer/dryer and looks like the house has hookup for both electric and gas.. any opinions on which I should get and why?

2. Looks like for Internet I have Xfinity or Spectrum as options. Opinions on which to get and why? I work from home and need good speeds and reliable service.

Nice Camaro! We've had both Xfinity and Spectrum and also work from home a lot so need fast reliable service. They're the two best options over some of the others (AT&T), I'd probably go with whoever has the better deal right now, but be forewarned after the introductory rate expires they all go up big time! And we've had both gas & electric driers, I think the gas may have some advantages drying the clothes but you do have the extra hassle of another gas appliance. I've worked on several electric dryers myself replacing switches, thermostats, heating units, belts, etc. but don't know that I'd jump right in to work on a gas dryer the same way? Have a safe move.

Yeah I was looking into them and Xfinity I can get a local TV changes + a few for like $10 a month (I stream but live channels are nice once in awhile) they have a 1.2 GB cap which SHOULD be okay but you never know. Spectrum has unlimited data which is nice... will likely go with Spectrum I really wanted Centurylink but not available at address..... hopefully will be available later at address

2. We have Xfinity--quite an improvement from the snail-slow DSL we had before we moved here. Great speed and pretty reasonable price. The trade-off, in our experience, is that Xfinity is Comcast and Comcast, even back some years in our experience, has never been outstanding in customer service. A few months back we got our bill, but for TWO months and with a late fee tacked on. I finally got a live person (took a couple of letters to do it, and then they called me) and pointed out that I had sent out the check for the previous month's payment a full sixteen days before it was due, but was cashed by Comcast on the precise due date. I had the records to prove it. The Customer Service rep, an oily, patronizing sort, said that Comcast ALWAYS posts payment on the day it was received, but that he would grant a "one time only" revocation of the late fee. I thanked him but said that in the future my Comcast payments would be sent certified mail, at random intervals. just to make sure it never happens again. Hasn't happened since.

Case #2: A couple of weeks back our service went down. I called them and they obligingly sent out a tech the following day. After running numerous tests and replacing some hardware outside he finally checked out my modem and was amazed. It was obviously a modem that had been previously used, and "That's the WRONG modem for your service!" He replaced with a newer, different model, and the service has been great--but yesterday, I got my bill and they had tacked on $100 for the "service call" even though it was their hardware that had been the reason for my outage!

So...love the service. Can't express the same love for Comcast.

Have had Spectrum for 7 years, customer service has friendly, knowledgeable folks. Internet has been great, they just introduced wifi pods which now extends access to the outside......may change tv plans since using streaming services more and cable channels less.

I know serious cooks can't handle the idea of cooking with electricity but I've seen reports of too many houses around the country (including my brother-in-laws in Nevada) blowing to smithereens due to gas leaks. I live between 466A and 44 where they don't have gas lines and I feel safer for it. For that reason, I would go with electric over gas if given the choice.

I've had Spectrum for internet and they were OK though they did raise the price a couple of times in the few years I had them. Xfinity probably does the same. If you stream much video, particularly 4K video, make sure your provider doesn't have data caps or you might get a rude surprise on your bill if and when you go over the limit. I've got CenturyLink optic fiber now and am getting 940 Mbps downloads AND 940 Mbps uploads with no data caps for less than what I used to get 100 Mbps down/15 Mbps up from Spectrum. I'd recommend them to everyone if they were available everywhere.

Have Century Link for internet. $49.00 a month including tax and not allowed to raise prices. Service has been good.

One month ago cable was cut and it took 4 days to repair. Installer installed temp cable which is now lying in the grass and was told that another person or company would permanently bury cable in 7 days. Still not buried.

Prior to the cut, their contractor buried cable < 6 inches below ground level. I do not know what code is for depth but was told that it should have been 3 feet down.

Are you sure it is wired for an electric dryer? Electric dryers use 240v outlet. There should be an outlet on the dryer side of the wall and it should be 120v to run the electric motor for the drum and the electronics. We have a washer and gas dryer on order. Never had a gas dryer before. Thought about getting an electrician to add a 240v outlet but if we end up hating the gas dryer, we can switch to electric later.

I've never had comcast/xfinity but have heard horror stories. So we are going with Spectrum. We close late August so time will tell if we made a good choice.

I had an electrician install dryer outlet and proper amp in electric box. Easy peasy. Don’t like gas dried clothes.

Double check for your 240 dryer outlet... Ours did not have one in our new home in St. Catherine.. we're paying Pike Electric to install one...we use Spectrum... No issues... Great customer service.

See Jack at Sears Hometown on 441 in Summerfield for your appliance needs. Your choice on dryers but gas normally cost $100 more than electric.

Look at the channel lineup for Xfinity vs Spectrum. Personally, I prefer Xfinity by far. They aren’t even close.

Apparently the Villages allows two high speed TV/internet providers for each Village. In the south where you are your options are Xfinnity/Comcast or spectrum. These are the only two with infrastructure in your Village.
When 5G “cellular” becomes available you will have another option. But for the next 12-24 months I’d go with the no data limit plan. You’d be surprised how fast you use it up especially with streaming and working.

We are new to Citrus Grove as of this month. We have had Spectrum up here in Ohio for years and have no issues with the service so we are going with Spectrum in Florida also. We have had gas and electric dryers in the past and prefer electric.

Your setup for gas, a gas dryer still needs a standard 120v outlet, and that’s what I see in the photo. I ordered my gas dryer from Costco. It delivered on time and in perfect condition.

I also signed up with Xfinity. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the installer and service from the store. The phone app works well too. I’m only discouraged by their data cap

Washer and dryer will cost you about 20% more than 1-2 years ago.

Spectrum service in the last 2 years had been a nightmare and the speeds they quote aren’t even close. Both of them charge you for a full month even if you only have a partial month. They charge 100- to have service and TV prewired for Xfinity so the box will have to have service changed over. They are both awful however they are a monopoly here and other than streaming you have little choice. You either get 30 channels for 200 with most of them duplicates. I moved here in 2019- cost was $127- for 1 TV, in June of 2021 it was 225-my service broke down 8 times replaced hardware 3 times and remote 6 times. Now if you want then you do the install to your TV they walk you through it. I had them up north it was fine down here just awful and I’m so excited to leave and dump them in a few weeks. Forced to go to a UPS to return the hardware. Never sign a contract you don’t get a better rate

Make sure you get the proper width of the washer & dryer. Usually, lawndry room has limited space to place these machines

We have not seen any new pre-built homes in the Villages set up for both gas and electric dryers. Are you certain about that?

We have never had anything but gas dryers in all of our (8) homes. Our new place in St Catherine is gas for the dryer and range and hot water, and that is fine with us. Gas dryers do typically cost about $100 more than electric, but are usually less expensive to operate.

With respect to the post about safety of electric-only service, I guess that they never read of accidental electrocution of anyone or house fires from electrical short circuits or circuit overloading or from electrical appliances. Either gas or electric has some real but very small risk. Choosing between gas and electric is just not a big issue for us. Choose what you are most comfortable with. Personally, we would not go to the expense of installing a 240V outlet for an electric dryer, but others obviously feel differently.

As for cable, we have Comcast in the Villages and in our Condo in a Chicago suburb. It works for us. When we are away from one location for extended periods we can opt for a reduced service plan at that location that is very reasonable cost-wise. Do not know whether Spectrum offers that option or whether it is important to you. Occasionally Comcast has been a pain from a service standpoint, but it has not been frequent, and I doubt that any cable provider is completely trouble-free.

In the big picture, these are good issues to have. You are moving to a great place, you have good choices available to you. Enjoy!

Surprised no washer/dryer came with the house. No real recommendation on that. As far as internet, we use Spectrum. Great first time customer promotions. Also, they do not tack on taxes, fees, etc like the others do. Have had them a number of years and they’ve proven to be very reliable.

We used Appliance Direct in Fruitland Park to buy our Maytag washer and dryer which was priced better there than any other places. The place doesn’t look like much, but the products are the same and we saved about $150. We use high speed Xfinity for internet which for the most part has worked out well and was $50 a month for one year. Good luck with your move and welcome to TV 😊

We are snowbirds. We have comcast both in Massachusetts and in the villages. Comcast up north is both expensive and unreliable. We were paying $254/month for internet and TV. We cancelled the TV and went with a streaming service but we are still paying $110 for internet only. Down south the service is awesome and reasonably priced. We pay $139 for both internet and TV. The TV reception is true HD. The internet is fast and reliable.

I live in a village adjacent to yours and all houses here have gas hot water, ranges and dryer hookups, no choice of electric. The electric connection is for the washer. So I would double check your dryer connection it might be gas only.

We like natural gas: faster and MUCH cheaper to operate. Gas appliances include range, water heater, clothes dryer, and home heating for those rare times it's needed. Without heating, our monthly gas bill varies $18-21. Our (pre-owned) home came with all gas appliances, but there are 220 outlets behind the dryer and the range for those who prefer electric. As a concession to gas, we did have A-1 Lighting Protection (we highly recommend them) install a lightning-abatement setup; it was relatively inexpensive and gives us peace of mind, knowing the gas lines run in the attic.

As far as Internet access is concerned, we heard so many horror stories mainly about Comcast but Spectrum as well. Also, we don't subscribe to any commercial television (cable or satellite), so our choices were more limited. We have DSL through CenturyLink, which meets our needs well and virtually never has an issue. I no longer work at home, so we don't need ultra-fast service. It's been my experience that when I ask to piece together a 'bundle,' they ALWAYS assume it's television plus whatever else. They cannot grasp anyone with no television (a topic for another day...), but our bundle is phone service and Internet access. Works fine for us.

Back when our homes were built, they included all appliances (range, refrigerator, washer, dryer—and gas were typically used—but the choice for electric was, as mentioned, available. Homes also came with ceiling fans and window blinds throughout the house. We haven't seen any of the newer homes, but we understand these amenities are no longer included. Is this correct? If you want a top notch washer and dryer, Speed Queen is the only brand out there made to last forever. Yes, they are a little pricier than what you might buy at Home Depot or Lowe's, but you won't be replacing it in 5-7 years either, and you won't ever find this brand at a Home Depot or Lowe's either because they are too reliable. Big Box stores are only going to sell you something you'll be replacing in 5 - 7 years. And please stay away from Samsung's... worst washer and dryer products on the market. I am amazed at the number of people who think they're getting a bargain when they go to Home Depot or Lowe's to buy a washer or dryer. All I can say is be sure to look for reviews for washers and dryers on you tube. It appears most no longer have an agitator in the center (top load machines) and just because it may look like an agitator (has that post thing in the middle), it may not agitate. They rely on the drum rotating back and forth to swish the clothes and water. When you see them operate on you tube they don't pull the clothes in and down toward the bottom - just twists back and forth. I can't see how they get anything clean.

From my research, Maytag has a commercial technology unit and speed queen has a "commercial" unit that has an agitator that works like the old style agitators. Seems no one has any in stock. Have to place an order for one.

I my last house I had cheap Amana pair and in 9 years not one issue. Thinking of going with them again. Only issues is can’t wash King comforter in it

All I can say is be sure to look for reviews for washers and dryers on you tube. It appears most no longer have an agitator in the center (top load machines) and just because it may look like an agitator (has that post thing in the middle), it may not agitate. They rely on the drum rotating back and forth to swish the clothes and water. When you see them operate on you tube they don't pull the clothes in and down toward the bottom - just twists back and forth. I can't see how they get anything clean.

In reference to the agitators, pay attention to the model. for example Maytag has the same washer with an agitator (MVW7230HW) and without an agitator (MVW7232HW). The MVW7232HW is the impeller type. We bought the impeller type as our clothes do not get very dirty and the need for an aggressive agitator is not necessary. You also get a bit more room when you remove the agitator.

For those that might not know, Amana, Whirlpool, Maytag, JennAir, and Kitchen Aid are all made by the same company.

We currently have gas and love it. We're bringing our washer/dryer with us as they're both about 1 year old.

I was also wondering about gas vs electric dryers. I guess based on what I have seen here, I will go electric. I have no complaints up here from Comcast so I will probably stick with Xfinity.

I will no doubt have a lot of questions, but I am going to read through the forums first.

For all those looking for washer dyrers, pay attention to the depths of your laundry room. We were originally building a Linden that had lots of room for any size dryer/washer. Well we bought a Woodside that popped up on the market to only find later that it is going to be one tight squeeze to get our dryer not to extend into the walkway. Fingers crossed.

You might not be able to go electric without having an outlet put in for the dryer. I am going gas as I don't have an outlet for electric and seems gas is more efficient

Im packing ready to move to citrus grove. Gas dryers cost less than running electricity. I’ve had both. Gas just seems better for a dryer.
