View Full Version : Preemptive Hoarding

With the unbelievable rise in COVID cases, with hospitals nearing their capacity and many American's still refusing to vaccinate themselves, It's quite apparent that the country "MAY" go into a modified lockdown and once again everyday commodities will be in short supply.
In order to protect myself and my family, I have purchased a deep freezer which is inside my garage and filled with meats. I have stocked-up on everyday items, I have a 180 day supply of required medication and my spare bedroom is filled with everything I will need to survive the next commodity shortage. You may think that I am hoarding, but I am preemptively protecting and providing for my family if the need should arise. I hope that nothing will happen, but just in case, I hope you guys are also taking precautions for the next round of "POSSIBLE" shortages. Be Safe and proactive.

Its working Summerfield Walmart shut down
“ COVID-19 has forced the closure of the Walmart in Summerfield.
“The store closed at 2 p.m. Friday for “additional cleaning, sanitizing, and stocking.” The store is scheduled to reopen at 6 p.m. Sunday.
The company would not confirm the reason for the closing, which is taking place during the Florida sales tax holiday, which continues through Monday. Stores like Walmart regularly post huge sales during back-to-school shopping sprees fueled by the tax free holiday.
However, employees told **************.com that COVID-19 was the reason for the store’s closing”

Just curious, what is the cutoff for hoarding? If I stay below six month's of medication can I say I am not hoarding? If I only fill a spare bedroom and avoid spilling into the garage then do avoid the hoarding label?

Panic is interesting. One friend bought a used home. I think it came with his new, used wife. Someone made a fallout shelter in the basement. It was so badly built that pieces kept falling.
We must have about 100 rolls of toilet paper. Gun sales have exploded. Best line I heard was people are buying guns to protect their toilet paper.
How many of us even know how to open a can without and electric can opener? How to use that hook thing on your boy-scout knife, if you can remember where the knife is?
May we never discover what will happen if....................

I think it is wonderful to be prepared, OP, as long as you remember to use the food and replace with new regularly. You are now ready for hurricanes, tornadoes, Covid shortage, A bomb (in Hawaii we had a few scares relatively recently) or other emergencies. In fact you could even help out a neighbor in need if you chose to. Reminds me of Aesop’s fable of the ant and the grasshopper.

At the time, as a kid, it scared me to death. When I look back on it today, I can only laugh as our classroom had these huge windows about 10 feet high. They even had a hook on a pole to open the top part of the window. My desk was right by the window. They should have played this song too as it would have been perfect.

Op you must not be a prepper. If you are really serious about what ever you fear, any military supply store, or military base has survival kits. Costco for that matter has some.
You can buy per week, per month, or buy a pallet. No special storage, lasts for what will be your life time. We have a kit in all of our homes, not for your reasons, but for tornado, or hurricane. We lost power and cell towers, couple weeks ago from a tornado, for 8 days. Gas for generator was scarce.
Grandkids used the 7 day kit for 3 day while power was out, 200 plus trees and downed live wires blocked in or out of their home. Now that is a real reason to be prepared. All agreed not the best food, but kept them comfortable and have now made a list as to what to add for next time.
Op you didn’t say you got a whole house generator, or portable. Without it you won’t have the food you squirreled away.
Very little makes me worry as you are. Think vegetarian, and a gas’s grill. We don’t hoard, if there is a shortage, we make do with something else.

I remember a summer camp I went to as a kid, we had freeze-dried food in a bag. Open up, toss in a pot of water in a fire, and soon after, you have some pretty tasty beef stew. We even had freeze-dried desserts like caramel apple cups.

How do you keep fresh food for 3 months? During last hurricane, Groceries were just bare racks and flooded tunnels . I arrive the first flight into Orlando after the Hurricane, no grocery in the house since we had been gone for 4 months. I couldn’t buy groceries much less TP

Although, I do have around 6 months worth of toilet paper. That's a habit I've had for years though. I used to get rewards at Staples for returning ink cartridges from friends and family, and always traded it in for the same thing every month: toilet paper, a case of water, and paper towels.
Now, I have to actually pay for them but I still keep several months's worth of TP and at least a week's worth of bottled water.
Edited to add: I don't "hoard" it. I just buy a couple 9-packs when it's on sale, after I'm down around the same amount.

It's called Prepping. There is absolutely no problem with someone being prepared. Even the leaders go on TV every hurricane season and tell folks to prep. Sorry, but if it comes to a choice between feeding family or feeding those that did not prep, common sense says most folks will feed their families. If you start prepping ahead of time, the economy will not even notice products missing off the shelves and will remain stocked.
It's not survival of the fittest, it's survival of the smartest. Don't rely on others to pity you and share their rations when you do not think ahead. Communism only works on the conquered and enslaved. If you think that the community is going to force rationing of privately owned supplies, better get "prepped" for a fight.
That said, I do not believe the panic over an extended pandemic. Hospitals are filling up because many folks that put off surgery last year are now opting to get worked on now. Yes, infections may be up but deaths are not significantly increasing YET. A week long surge does not mean a trend. Panic at your own peril.

You are creating a self fulfilling prophecy. If everyone hoarded and did the same, they would create the shortage you are talking about. No need to hoard. I didn’t have any supply shortage in anything last year. I always was able to find everything if only online and having it shipped to me.

One of the real downsides of social media, I'm afraid. Before the World Wide Web a panicked person might influence, say, ten others. Now with via email, twitter, message boards, etc., it can be ten thousand or more, and the rumor behind it doesn't even have to be true.
Prudence, not panic, is the way to go.

Good grief! It's amazing how fearful one can get. Yes, I too remember Y2K and even when some folks were building bomb shelters back in the day. Two years ago we didn't hoard and always had just enough toilet paper. NOT sure how often folks "go" they need to stock up on 6 mo. worth. I guess we've always purchased the largest packages. As far as food...I've heard MRE's are terrible. IF the grid goes down we'll ALL be in trouble. Just how much "enough" is "enough"? Think about it..........
I make wine. If the bottom falls out I have enough on hand for a good three months of cozy befuddlement.

I don't think we will see any kind of shutdown again after last time. Now we know how the virus is transmitted, we know how to treat it better And we have an effective vaccine and lot's of people are vaccinated. There may be some shortages from states where the vaccine rate is low but nothing more than that. Last week the news was reporting vaccination rates were up sharply, but maybe not in Florida. At the end of the day this virus will demonstrate the survival of the fittest not only health wise but who gets vaccinated and who does not.

It reminds me of living in Missouri and the old guy who predicted there was going to be an earthquake. I had lots of water and stuff in my garage at the time that nothing happened.

My husband and I will be moving to The Villages soon from the country of Panama, originally from Texas. We have lived in Panama for going on 6 years. I roll my eyes when I hear people talking about lockdowns and hoarding. The entire country of Panama is under a mask mandate and a curfew from 10 pm to 4 am. When the pandemic first started in Panama, no businesses were open except hospitals, gas stations, grocery stores and pharmacies. Airports were closed, no flights in or out of Panama. No buses or taxis were allowed out. No beer or liquor sales were allowed. Women could get out for grocery shopping and pharmacies on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 2 hours only, time women could get out for 2 hours was based on passport or ID number. My time was 11 am to 1 pm. Men could get out for their 2 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My husband's time was 11 am to 1 pm. No one could get out after their time allotted or on the weekends, not even to walk. There were checkpoints set up to make sure people were not out when it was not their designated time. The police have the authority to fine or arrest anyone if they refused to be in their home if it was not their designated day and time, this also included refusing to wear a mask.
There was no hoarding going on. There was always food, toilet paper, etc available for everyone. People were respectful of leaving products on the store shelves for others.
Businesses are now all open. Everyone must wear a mask when out of the house. You can be fined or arrested if you refuse to wear a mask. The majority of the country has been vaccinated including myself and my husband. The Minister of Health and a committee makes the covid restrictions, they are all doctors. The politicians do not make the restrictions. The entire country is under the same mask mandates and curfew. No fighting or lawsuits among the towns and cities.
So please before complaining about Walmart being closed for a few hours, it could be much worse. Being in a different country during the pandemic has been difficult at times but it was for the health of the population. We are moving back to the United States because of family members that are ill.

Hmm did not think about that LOL. Buy those freeze dried foods instead they last forever and ever. Hydrate with water, that is if water is not contaminated.
IMO I hope they spray for roaches also. IMO that’s bigger threat to my well being. I can wear glove’s, respirator, and wash what I buy, but I can’t stop roaches inside boxes, sacks, and vegetables. Walmart not only store that got this problem IMO.

Copied from 562.7
Is it Legal to Distill Alcohol in Florida?
No, it is not legal to distill alcohol for personal consumption in the state of Florida. Making and possessing moonshine is illegal. Possession of unlicensed alcohol is a felony over one gallon and a misdemeanor under that amount.
Is it legal to distill alcohol, for consumption? Yes, with a Craft Distillery License (Fee $4,000); (Florida Statutes Section 565.03) Application Form # ABT-6001
Sounds like catch 22? How do you distill liquor without making moonshine? I sure their going to age gallon or less for years. If it not aged it’s moonshine?
Source: Copied and pasted from Google.
Moonshine” came to be distinguished from whiskey for its illegal nature rather than it being a different type of alcohol – moonshine is just whiskey that hasn't been taxed. ... Historically, the taste of moonshine was closer to vodka than it is to a dark-colored whiskey.Dec

I thank everyone for responding to my original post, but in no way did I mean in anyway to upset or alarm anyone. My primary goal was to inform ( as most Villagers already know ) that there is a realistic possibility of another modified quarantine that may be imposed by our local state and federal government.
For this reason only, I am preparing myself and my family -without any government assistance- for whatever may occur in the future. I have worked too hard for the last 40+ years and have accumulated enough wealth to never have to run out of anything that I or my family ever may need.
We are all here on this Earth for a minimal amount of time and I plan on enjoying myself for my remaining years. Good Luck to all.

Hope you have a generator for all that meat in case of an extended power outage.

I do NOT think that consumer goods will become unavailable. That said there could be other, worse, social shocks to come. I would caution that the freezer storing meat and the stove to cook them will DEPEND on ELECTRICITY. So, I would suggest canned fish and meats and canned vegetables. I would add some fresh items like carrots and apples - then some dried fruits. Canned soups would be a nice treat and could be put out in the sun to raise the temperature before eating. Also, a solar cooker could be made or purchased. But, if things were to go "south" then do NOT expect electricity to be supplied. A gas generator might help, but then you are dependent on supplies of gasoline.

I doubt anyone here cares about what Panama does. But the real question is: are they doing better with COVID than countries that aren't as draconian? After all, Japan has tremendous compliance with masks, yet they almost shut the Olympics down. Canada has become almost isolationist, yet they are doing no better than the US.

Before we all panic over "cases", could I just suggest a simple exercise that might help calm you down?
Examine this data, directly from the CDC:
Provisional COVID-19 Death Counts by Week Ending Date and State | Data | Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Death-Counts-by-Week-Ending-D/r8kw-7aab/data)
If you sort and study that intentionally confusing document, you will discover that for the most recent week for which there is data, 7/25/21 - 7/31/21, 362 people died of Covid-19 in the state of Florida, and 2,467 people died of all causes. According to the Census Bureau, there are 21,477,737 people in Florida.
So your likelihood of dying from COVID this week is: 362 / 21,477,737 = 0.0017%
And your likelihood of dying from anything else this week is: (2467 - 362) / 21,477,737 = .0098%
1.69 people out of 100,000 will die this week of the bad cold virus from China, while 9.8 Floridians will die from something else -- most likely a HEART ATTACK, since that is by far the most likely cause of death.
I just hope all this government-sponsored panic-porn over "cases" doesn't cause one of my neighbors to drop dead in a panic from a heart heart attack, while stuffing his freezer full of hoarded meat!
Because even THAT scenario is far more likely than your odds of dying from COVID!
Besides, if you're sensible worry-wart like me, there is already a year's worth of freeze-dried survival food under your bed!

I can't agree with the "lots of vaccinated people". In the US it is 50% FULLY vaccinated people. The good part is that because of FEAR people are waking up and getting vaccinated. The BAD part is that many southern US states are about 30%. The REALLY BAD part is that we needed to be at 85% like Connecticut and some European countries - and we needed it that high by about May in order for the US to have repelled the Delta variant. Children's DEATHS are spiking upwards and some hospitals are FULL of CV patients. Unless you can rewind the clock to April and hypnotize the unvaccinated into accepting REALITY, we are at a REALLY BAD time with respect to CV. And hoarding will make everything worse!

The next event we need to be prepping for is collapse of our dollar, it's coming.

Canada has had about one-third the cases and one-third the deaths per capita as the U.S. Japan has had about one-tenth the cases and deaths as the US. It's precisely because they are willing to impose restrictions and cancel things like the Olympics that they have been able to keep the numbers down.

Having lived through Katrina, my suggestion to everyone is to keep at least a months supply of necessary items for your health and survival. Electricity may be out for weeks at a time depending on your location. It is easy to do and it is not hoarding. When you shop buy an extra item. Do this several times and when you have the amount you need, keep replenishing your survival items as you use them.
It is not rocket science. As all former Boy Scouts know "Be Prepared."

As you stated...unbelievable..because it is. The CDC has made a recall of the Innova rapid antigen covid test on June 10,2021. The PCR test was never invented for this purpose. They give false positives. Dr Kary B Mullis. is the inventor and repeated that his test is not for SAR-COVID.Do you trust your government. Yea, OK. Where do these "facts" come from? When did he say that? He died 2 years ago well before Covid-19. The only "true" part is that the FDA DID say that test was not good.

May need to invest in face masks as well. The news this morning was interesting about school districts requiring masks.
First of all, any district mandating masks in schools is violating an executive order by the governor of Florida banning such mandates, which carries with it force of law. Personally, I disagree with that order, but it is the law, so if I were the governor I would have those school boards arrested and let them contemplate their contempt for the law from a jail cell.
That being said, and I'll admit to a bit of hyperbole here, this was the gestalt from the school supervisors that were interviewed:
Aug. 2020: Masks are the best thing since sliced bread. We should all go to the church of the holy mask and bow to the altar and thank the mask god for providing them
Today: Masks aren't much of a defense, but they must do something, so we'll mandate them anyway
Aug. 2022: ????????
And all this from the government that assured us our children were safe under their desks during a nuclear attack.
If only flip-flopping were a sport and betting was allowed..........

Just my opinion, but this is a normal reaction to feeling scared and anxious. In order to feel in control, hoarding supplies makes one feel like they have done something and have overcome a envisioned danger. As many others have pointed out, there are new dangers (no electricity, target for theft, etc.) that introduce new anxiety where ones life is reduced to reacting to perceived concerns. Not a healthy way to live.
Its prudent to have non-perishable food as we all saw with hurricane Katrina, but if one has stockpiled more than a month or so of consumables, I think it is more of a mental health concern than that of being over prepared.

Excellent points made. Really, though, the difference between hoarding and stocking up is the difference between a cult and a religion. A cult is what the OTHER guy believes in.
It comes down to common sense. Perishables--well--perish. We eat perishables now, and have an ample supply of canned goods on hand should the power go down. People with a month's supply of frozen perishables have really only enough perishables for--what, if the power goes down? Three days, maybe four, before most of it goes bad?
MREs get a bad rap, but overall they're not terrible and they are designed to keep active, healthy young men nourished and active in stressful situations. Plus, they're designed to last. And last. And last. having a couple of boxes on hand is a good idea, in my opinion.

I remember helping a neighbor dig one with a plastic shovel and pail (I was quite young). The problem was that even if you survived the immediate attack, you had to come out sometime, and the best case scenario was you emerged into a nuclear wasteland only to freeze to death in nuclear winter, playing your role in a mass extinction event.

I dunno - I don't think 6 months worth of TP is all that much. Maybe y'all are using too much TP per day? A single 20-roll package of the cheap single-ply Staples stuff (which I like to call sandpaper) will last for 4-5 months in hubby's bathroom. A couple of 9-roll packages from Walmart (double-ply, similar to Angel Soft but the Walmart brand) will keep me comfortable for around the same amount of time. When I get down to my second pack, I start looking to see if it's on sale again, and pick up another pack then.
The Staples stuff I get when hubby's down to around a dozen rolls, that's when I buy a new 20-roll pack. So maybe once every 3-4 months.

Many of the Rec centers have closed temporarily for deep cleaning over the years. Unless you know for certain that the reason Walmart closed for cleaning was due to a Covid outbreak, you are only spreading rumors.

I've always bought my TP from BJ's, Costco or Sams. I buy the huge jumbo pack maybe once a year. I also buy other household staples such as paper towels and washing liquids in bulk.
This has been a lifelong practice. It is not a change of behavior. I also keep a little extra water on hand. I own a dual fuel generator. Barbeque propane tanks are easy to handle and clean. These came in handy a few months ago when my town was hit by a tornado. I was able to have hot water using the generator to power my on demand hot water heater. And, I was able to run the garage beer fridge.
Hot showers and cold beer. Do you really need anything else? At the end of a hot day, it's delightful. I also offered hot showers and an cold beer to my neighbors who were not so fortunate. A few of my neighbors had whole house generators, too. They came in handy while we waited two weeks for power to be restored.
I have a shotgun and ammunition for it, too. If you need 4,000 rounds, you need to go to the range to improve your accuracy.
Go look in your pantry and see if you don't need to acquire a case of water and some canned goods. It's a good idea to keep the barbeque tank full, too.
Hoarding is a mental disorder. Hoarding is an uncontrollable compulsion. Being prepared for emergencies is called prudence and forethought. Being prepared for emergencies is a higher order of intelligence.

The 85% that I saw on TV for Connecticut may (?) have been for........those that have the POSSIBILITY of vaccination - which would LEAVE OUT the 18% of children that are ineligible for the vaccine. I try NOT to concern myself with small DETAILS because that causes people to miss the big picture. Which in this particular case is that Connecticut has done a BETTER public health job than Florida, Alabama, and Texas! And one can INFER from those facts as to which state has the SUPERIOR LEADERSHIP. To put it SIMPLY.......Florida = BAD.......Connecticut = GOOD. There - no more confusion!
Now, as to the GREAT April or May controversy (or whatever month).......the BIG PICTURE here is that the great UNITED STATES failed and FAILED miserably at its # 1 priority - which is to protect its citizens. That failure started L O N G before April 2020.
The point is that the US COULD have had a much quicker and better response to the CV Pandemic. We had the tools. We did NOT have the 100% conviction of willpower to accomplish the purpose. The end results are that MANY typical citizens (such as the topic of this thread) are in a tizzy of chaos and confusion about the future of our once-great country. Many comments like, " will the dollar be worthless" and "should I hoard food" come about BECAUSE there is no longer faith in the whole FABRIC of democracy and US Democracy. At a minimum, you should always be prepared for events like hurricanes and other weather issues.
I still live in Maryland. Most of my extensive pantry and stores of food are mostly because I am a foodie and want to have most things that store well on hand constantly: Rice, 12-15 kinds of dried beans, large bags of maybe 4 kinds of flour, a couple pounds of 7-8 kinds of pasta on top of a freezer full of each kind of meat that's before keeping ordinary canned/bottled goods like beer, broth, wine, soup, rum, Tuna, vodka, Spam, other liquor, and water in decent quantities.
But also have whole house (natural gas) generator, several bottles of propane for the grill, 2-3 cords of wood. Only have 3 guns (and two bows) and though I don't have zombie apocalypse levels of ammo, I have enough to supplement our stores and vegetable garden with the 200-300 lbs. of venison that walk through my yard daily.

You should never let on to "anyone" you are "hoarding". Could mean trouble for you if s..t really hits the fan.
Very true, one of my friends is a police officer. He has had contact with a group of people who prepares for the end. They look for houses that they will take over when things hit the fan. He was telling me this because he said my house would be on their list. Why get everything you need when you can just take someone else's who did all the work!

That is what I heard from an English news moderator on TV. And the US had a HUGE head start in vaccine production and availability compared to England. IMO England must have a more cohesive and less chaotic society than here in the US.
The US has 11 states bigger than the Brittan and five times to population. Of course, your next statement will be one comparing us with Australia. My momma always told me to not worry about what the kid down the street was doing.

EXACTLY! If the SHTF, most of them will be having heart attacks anyway and can't take it with them. Like I said before, stock up on ammo.

Follow the Mormon church guidelines and have one year's worth of food and supplies on hand at all times. Seems to be a smart move.

I have heard this. I think they will give up on our neighborhood before they get anywhere near my house. Having ONLY three guns, we are way on the low end of average guns per household in my neighborhood!

Canada has had about one-third the cases and one-third the deaths per capita as the U.S. Japan has had about one-tenth the cases and deaths as the US. It's precisely because they are willing to impose restrictions and cancel things like the Olympics that they have been able to keep the numbers down.
I'm pretty sure Japan didn't cancel the Olympics. My neighbor said they saw some of it on television.

Reality...........hospitals are filling up because CV patients are drowning in their OWN fluids in their OWN lungs. Be glad it's NOT you because you got your vaccination. Hospitals are turning away elective surgeries and losing money on long stays of CV patients. Hospital staff morale is low and nurses and staff are QUITTING. Because of all of that, everyone's insurance WILL INCREASE. That's the REAL......reality!
We heard much the same up in Minnesota during the first go-round. According to our cartoon governor Walz and his bevy of "experts", there were predictions of 75,000 or more Minnesotans dead from COVID, hospitals were going to be overflowing with COVID patients pounding on the doors pleading to be let in, and people were going to be dying in their homes in numbers and situations reminiscent of the Bubonic Plague in Europe. Many hospitals totally stopped doing elective surgeries (though just how "elective" a hip replacement might be when your pain is front-and-center 24 hours a day is debatable), hiring extra staff and bracing for the flood. Governor Walz, with admirable foresight, went so far as to spend 6.9 million of Minnesota taxpayers' dollars to purchase an old warehouse to be converted to an emergency morgue, assumedly the place where the street workers could dump the bodies of those dead of COVID that they were going to be sweeping up.
So...what happened? In the face of the dire predictions, just about nothing. Well, some thing did happen. Walz' $6.9 million dollar charnel house admitted nary a body. Hospitals sat with more empty rooms than full ones waiting for the surge that never came. a full 21 clinics and hospitals in the Twin Cities area alone, including Bethesda and St. Joseph's hospitals, closed their doors permanently. Instead of working overtime, many health care workers sat home drawing unemployment.
Oh...and the actual totals? 7,694 Minnesotans as of August 8. Including both those dying OF COVID and those dying WITH COVID. And even with this current "surge", daily deaths in Minnesota have dropped to almost nothing.
And people wonder why the doom-and-gloomers are met with such scorn.

And if the prophecies had come true and no arrangements had been made, the Govenor would have been hung on a lamp post.
20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The only thing to fear is mass hysteria and panic. It is those frightened lemmings that you should fear. The rest of us will be living our daily lives to the fullest and shaking our heads at the panicked lemmings following charlatans off the cliff.

Costco, Walmart and other major retailers limits purchases on paper goods, water & key items amid increased supply chain delays. Folks, I hate to say it, but I told you so. Call me a pessimist, a hoarder or just an idiot, but this is the time to stock-up on vital supplies.

Come of people. Fool me one time, shame on you, fool be again, shame on me. The only excuse for stockpiling - if you want to call it that - is to be ready for hurricanes and the like. Being stocked up, so you can wipe yourself for 6 months is just dumb.

Shopped at Costco, sams, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods today! Not a limit on anything in any of the stores. I take that back there was a limit on air freshener that were on sale. :a040:

We were at Sam's in Lady Lake this afternoon.
Signs were up limiting how much paper goods customers were allowed to buy.
Shelves were 80% or more wiped out of toilet paper.
Kleenex about 50% wiped out (oops, unintentional pun).
Paper towels....bountiful (there's another one!) supplies.

You're right about the supply chain problems but not because of a lockdown situation. However, knock on wood because who knows what may be coming down the pike in the winter??? :ohdear:
I've been doing my holiday shopping early, and have been buying throughout the summer because I can envision a scenario where there will be "supply chain" issues with kids toys and other popular holiday items.

So what really has changed to be so far off the "normal" supply routine.
Covid? I don't believe that.
People collecting more money staying home?
I don't believe that either. Too many people out looking for jobs.
My opinion.
The above and other related excuses being used by suppliers to operate with a lower level of output/delivery while leveraging prices going up.
Lower operating costs and higher prices and a silent consumer base. Every business' dream formula!

I may get hungry ........
