I had appointments with two of my doctors today. One called early this morning to say our appointment would have to be on the telephone. Then this afternoon I had to go to the Sharon Morse Medical Office Building for a regularly scheduled procedure. At 3:00 PM there were virtually no one in the lobby, waiting room or other rooms in the large Florida Cancer Center offices and procedure rooms. I did meet with my doctor there and between the two appointments. Here is what I learned.

—The largest primary care practice in The Villages, with over 60 doctors, has been riddled with COVID infections—26 cases as of this morning. They’re shifting all their appointments to telephone or FaceTime, cancelling all appointments that aren’t medically necessary altogether.

—At Florida Cancer Specialists, a huge practice with 100 offices and over 250 doctors thruout central Florida has shut down all but patient’s regularly scheduled and medically necessary procedures. No new patient or follow up appointments or procedures such as ultrasound, X-ray or other similar procedures.

—The entry window at Lake Medical Imaging in the Sharon Morse building was dark at 3:00 PM. I don’t know if they are open and operating.

—Florida Cancer Specialists has mandated that all their employees be vaccinated and show proof by next Monday or they will be sent home with no pay or be terminated. They’ve made it clear that the new rules are non-negotiable.

—One doctor showed me pictures of similar rules on the front door of an Ocala Hospital.

—The doctors rattled off the names of a dozen nearby hospitals who are what they called “Code Black”—not accepting any new patients for any reason. One doctor related an incident where a local man having a heart attack had to be airlifted to Miami. There are no hospitals within 75 miles of The Villages which are accepting new patients because they are completely full with COVID cases.

—Hospitals in Ocala had been sending new COVID patients home with a mask an oxygen tank. But now they’re reporting a shortage of oxygen because suppliers can’t keep up with the demand.

—One of my doctors reported that four of his patients, all younger than 40, have died in the last few days of COVID.

I came back home this afternoon shocked and scared. How this new Delta variant has spread and how lethal it is has frightened me to my core. This isn’t just on the TV news any more…it’s here, right in The Villages.

Respond however you wish to my post, I’m sure there will be naysayers and those who will claim their rights to personal freedom or claim the COVID reports to be false or created by the government, or simply fake news. But I’ve now seen enough evidence personally to know that’s not true. I’m pleading with you to reconsider both your own health as well as that of your friends and neighbors. Please, get vaccinated.

The parting words of that old Chicago cop that I quoted in my post earlier this week are even more applicable today. Please, please stay well out there…get vaccinated!

Laredo officials said in the complaint that Border Patrol planned to bus 250 to 350 immigrants per day into the city.

“Not every apprehended person is tested for COVID-19 as part of Defendants’ processing procedure before they are legally released from immigration custody and into the general public. Therefore, many, if not most, go untested and risk spreading the disease to other[s] in their group and the general public after their release,” the filing reads.

I got the Astra Zenica, J&J, Moderna and Pfizer shots. I'm triple masking all the time with N95 masks, wearing gloves, and wiping down my entire house with Clorox even though I'm the only one in it. I never leave the house and have groceries delivered to the garage where I let them sit for 5 days before I wipe down the outside with bleach. I've turned off my air conditioner and wrapped my house so no outside contaminated air can get in. I'm still scared!

Some may call me crazy, but if we all do this it will only be 10 days to flatten the curve!

Thank you for sharing these latest local happenings.
It’s unfortunate and mind boggling there still remains all the naysayers. It’s absurd that any of them can ignore what’s happening within the hospitals when it’s the doctors and nurses that are actually seeing the increase in hospitalizations and the decrease in available beds….and are the ones asking people to vaccinate, mask and be of help.
Only when their families are directly impacted will they change their views.
But all of this has been said before…and here we are still.

This virus will never be wiped out (as small pox) because Covid has animal reservoirs where small pox does not. There is another answer - nano silver colloid. Go to HIH.gov and search for the test of NSC versus Covid 19. If you want more information please send me a private message.

I think the Delta variant is something we have to live with or stay home all the time. ABC said yesterday that Pfizer is now 50% effective and immunity has dropped. Most of us will get it. The healthier people may fare better.

Please research the PCR test that is recalled by the FDA. It produces the false positive and is the reason why you have all the high cases. You have been scammed. Do your research stop listening to the narrative.Take care of your health and well being. 80 years never a cure for cancer and they have a vax for a flu in few months...

So do do understand that science has been proven that the vax peep are spreading the virus and that they have cause the stronger variant of Covid. Do more research it’s out there….not google because it’s their job to keep you blind. Go to DuckDuckGo read the science report from 2015 about virus and shots that don’t kill the virus. The vax. Peep are the host now. Go away from main stream media and you will find the truth.
I am not saying that what you report is not the truth I am saying ask yourself why……follow the science read reports form 2015 why we are here today.

Why doesn’t the CDC approve vaccine?
Because it not a vaccine……it a shot, it does not protect from getting Covid, it makes your a body a host to spread the virus. I really wish you people would follow the real science. Small Pox is a vaccine this is a shot that has no real promises except yes you can get Covid and become a host for the virus.

It makes me want to vomit how stupid these people are. We need some super strong mandates put in place and serious repercussions if they are not followed.
If people want to act this way, it's too bad we can't ship them off to some island and ride this out. Sadly very very soon it's going to be them against us, and it's going to be beyond ugly. I believe there will be deaths of a different cause....wow, what a world.

My husband got breakthrough Covid-19 and was ambulanced to The Villages hospital because his oxygen level was 84. They gave him oxygen for a few hours, took an X-ray and said it was good, and sent him home. The next day, his oxygen level was very low, our primary doctor said to take him to the Marion County hospital. They took a CT scan and found he had Covid pneumonia. He was there for 3 days. Meanwhile, I also tested positive. He is now home on oxygen, and we are quarantined.
Both of us were vaccinated with Pfizer. To those of you guys don’t think this is real, think again

Apparently we also are not England, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Canada and every other Western Democracy that has had far more rigorous governmental responses to Covid. Apparently these democracies understand that freedom does not include the right to spread disease, burden the health care system, and potentially lead to the deaths of people who did everything to protect themselves but were damaged by encountering idiots who see wearing a mask as an infringement on their free-dumb.

The gov does not tell you not to wear a mask. Do so if you want. Who is stopping you.
There is a lot of evidence that this virus is air borne not droplet borne which makes the masks useless.
The vaccine, so called, which it is not, is not the safest ever developed. It was rushed and has not been fully vetted. People who are vaccinated are spreading the virus just like people who are not vaccinated.
You are buying a lot of lies.
Hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin are highly effective but are not used because of “politics.”

I hate to disagree, but other than Israel the other nations are no longer democracies as we know them. They are socialist and authoritarian. And you're being naive because it's all about power and control not about safety. It's a slippery slope what's going on. Just wait and see. The Constitution is still a thing, and it limits the government's power.

Here's a suggestion: if you are concerned about the "breakthrough" infections, get yourself vaccinated, wear a mask (or three) or get a hazmat suit, stay 20 yards away from anyone you don't trust, and take any other precautions you deem necessary based on the "free-dumb" you enjoy in the USA. But please don't dictate how the rest of The People should prepare and be "safe." That's the most Un-American thing going on right now IMO.

Why doesn’t the CDC approve vaccine?

The FDA Has received the approval request from the CDC. It WILL BE APPROVED! In the meantime, I am praising the OP for his informative post. Unfortunately, a vaccination for a virus that can kill you was and still is politicized. People are dying—young and old. Get the damn vaccine and stop putting your fellow man and families in danger. BTW, in case you didn’t know, Governor DeSantis is vaccinated. He won’t declare a mask mandate due strictly to politics.

Let's cheer things up by remembering that Sumter County has the highest rate of vaccinations of all counties in Florida.

I am hazarding a guess that The Villages itself is even higher than 70% vaccinated. I hope that we don't get the breakthrough illness, but it is wise to still mask indoors.

I think that MOST of us who live in The Villages are quite aware of the science of this.

It makes me proud to live here. We are reasonable and smart and aware and up on things and are making the right choices, most of us.

As Billy the kid often points out....let's not get stuck on the vocal few. Most of us are quite aware and doing the right thing.

In general this is correct, YET……..those “vocal few” are repeated and never corrected and are very tolerated.

In addition, how smart (in the general sense) can we be as these conspiracies continue to appear on TOTV, and while P is not allowed, to contradict them, sometimes it is necessary to point things out that venture into that area. But, the tolerance level for allowing those items of disinformation are still tolerated by us all.

Trying to correct them and point out the lies and disinformation is what is disciplined……the lies stand and are becoming more and more tolerated.

It is not as FEW as you think it is.

Thank you for the update (on what is happening regionally).

My daughter (visiting from Italy), my son (living in Maryland) and I (living in Florida [but staying in Maryland]) are on a road trip.

We left on Monday, July , July 26th. We have traveled through:
West => MD, VA, WV, OH, IN, IL, KS, OK
East => TX, NM, TX, LA (now)

Future
East => MS, AL, FL
North => GA, SC, NC, VA , WV… MD

We are going to arrive in Florida in two days, at the earliest.

FYI
Florida seems the leader in positivity rates nationwide. Maryland is way over in the opposite direction (<5%).

My children have received “shots” (son = J&J; daughter = AstraZeneca). I have not received any shot(s) - yet.

Yes, we have mingled. Yes, we have eaten indoors. Yes, we wear masks whenever around unknown people (that’s everyone). No one has ridiculed us, anywhere, at any time, in any state.

I am not anti-vax. I get a flue shot annually and have done so for years. I await full FDA approval.

Thank you for respecting my decision. It may change any day.

I am optimistic, but fully cognizant of the peril I face. I will continue to mask and change masks frequently. I will not mingle with my fellow residents in TV. :-(

Thank you for the information about the local scene. I will share this with my children.

Bonus
We’re excited, as well, to meet Fred, the storm, whose timing is uncanny).

Thank you for your post. I recently had radiation for metastatic bone cancer. My doctor told me DO NOT go to a hospital. It’s too dangerous because of Covid. Before the radiation, I also recently had an intestinal blockage and my husband called 911. There was only one hospital that would take me because they are all full of Covid patients. It is extremely scary knowing that if I get worse, I’m out of luck.

It seems like the only way people can understand the seriousness of this covid situation is if they get sick. It’s easy to think it won’t happen to you. I will take every vaccine that’s offered to protect myself and others. We can only hope that others will do the same so we can all survive.

Sweden COVID: 1,110,147 Cases and 14,621 Deaths

Not sure what your point is but those statistics point to a 99.986829% survival rate.

Time to return to fifth grade to learn how to calculate a percentage.

14621/1110147 = 0.01317

When doing a calculation of a percentage you should have learned to move the decimal point 2 spaces to the right. So 1.317% of the cases resulted in a fatality. This leaves a survival rate of 98.683 %.

I am not sure why you think a survival rate says anything about the wisdom of masks or lockdowns. It doesn't. It says something about the underlying fragility of those sickened and the strength of the health care system to respond to critical illness.

Why doesn’t the CDC approve vaccine?

Because the CDC isn't the entity responsible for approving vaccines.

It's always interesting (sometimes shocking) to see when laymen disregard the advice of professionals who work in the field daily. It's nasty to say but this is the Darwin effect at work. That is when natural selection weeds out the most ignorant in our society.
Vaccine defiance will result in a more enlightened society! A good thing in the long run!

Sweden COVID: 1,110,147 Cases and 14,621 Deaths

Time to return to fifth grade to learn how to calculate a percentage.

14621/1110147 = 0.01317

When doing a calculation of a percentage you should have learned to move the decimal point 2 spaces to the right. So 1.317% of the cases resulted in a fatality. This leaves a survival rate of 98.683 %.

I am not sure why you think a survival rate says anything about the wisdom of masks or lockdowns. It doesn't. It says something about the underlying fragility of those sickened and the strength of the health care system to respond to critical illness.

You're right. Senior math moment. Still a good survival rate compared to other countries.

Based on this simple statistic, I think it's easier to conclude something about the ineffectiveness of masks rather than Swedes being less fragile.

I suspect there may be something to the manner in which the Swedes responded to the illness. They followed the science regarding masks so maybe they followed the science regarding early treatment with anti-inflammatories as well. Don't know for certain but it would be a pretty good bet.

My better half had an appointment to be evaluated for elective surgery two days ago; the day before, the office notified patients that all appointments were canceled, that the office was being closed because of the huge increase in the number of Covid cases in Florida. The same day, our primary care doc told us that he had diagnosed Covid in 29 (that's TWENTY-NINE) patients during the preceding five days. And for those who cite how low the mortality percentage is, don't tell me that; tell that to the person who's dying of Covid and to their family members. What an unbelievable lack of sensitivity! As another poster pointed out, wait until it hits home....

Should people get vaccinated? In my opinion, yes. Should business and the government mandate it and threaten to fire you or worse? Absolutely NO, This is NOT Russia, China, Cuba or Iran, THIS IS THE USA.

I get so bored with hearing propaganda pap cited as facts chiseled in stone. In the early 1980s (Brezhnev era) my cousin's son, age 9 or 10, came home from school in Moscow with a paper to memorize and recite for a Soviet dignitary visiting the school the next day. She read it, saw it to be a pack of lies, wrote out reality, and had him memorize that, which he recited in silence. Was my cousin dragged out in front of a firing squad? Of course not. But the principal did speak with her afterward and asked her not to do such a thing again. She had made her point.

The last time we were there, we witnessed a demonstration in Red Square of perhaps 200-300 elderly persons who sought the return of communism. Why? Because under communism (the only life they had known), no one was homeless, no one went hungry, and everyone had access to health care. Following the fall of communism, there is homelessness, there is hunger, and health care has become a commodity in the sense of 'the highest bidder.' Sound familiar? Some years ago, a friend was refused desperately needed cancer treatment at a major New York City hospital until she put X dollars on the barrelhead before they would even admit her. An appropriate business model for some businesses, but not for a non-profit hospital. I know there are those who would disagree—I suspect the same ones who keep citing how low the mortality rate of Covid is....

One of the most egregious attempts at manipulation on the part of government on private industry is dictating to the cruise lines visiting ports in Florida how they should conduct their business. I'm surprised not to hear more outrage about this, and I wonder why not?

Both are definitely socialist. Not Communist, but still socialist.

More propaganda pap. Could this come from everyone having access to health care? Citizens in Canada say they are no less democratic than the US. They live there; their opinion counts. Same with Israel; some of those living there see the country as autocratic, at times bordering on religious autocratic, and certainly not democratic, though they speak of recent changes offering a glimmer of hope. Of course, it shows sheer ignorance when the US is referred to as a 'democracy.' Try reading the documents from the founding of the nation: It is a 'republic,' not a 'democracy.' We don't hear '... and to the democracy for which it stands...' in the Pledge, do we? Ah, the desperation reflected in those who have to fall back on sarcasm. It certainly doesn't improve the soaring Covid numbers here in Florida, nor does labeling a country as operating under this versus that economic system. Sad.

I'm not surprised to hear The Villages Hospital gave you a wrong diagnosis. It's so disheartening to know we are subject to the mediocrity of this hospital. So many of us have had a horrible time there. All the best to you both for a full recovery.

I'm not wishing to call out anyone, but the author may not have all his facts straight. My wife was a patient at Florida Cancer this morning and asked a couple nurses about what was posted by this author. It does not appear there are any issues with Florida Cancer, employees have not been given a vaccine mandate, they are open as usual and seeing all patients...waiting room was as full as usual. Lake imaging, in the same building, was open for business and the waiting room had lots of patients in it. So...I just hope the author wasn't attempting to stir up panic, but is seems his facts aren't correct.
Is this a case of "he said, she said"? My goodness.....who to believe?????

This is a tough one. For many years the OP has been a pretty "straight shooter" and I would be inclined to believe him. However, that airlift a patient to Miami part when there are 12 open ICU beds here in Sumter County has put some doubt in my mind. And there were two different posters that disagreed with the OP. So, who knows??????

Thank you for sharing these latest local happenings.
It’s unfortunate and mind boggling there still remains all the naysayers. It’s absurd that any of them can ignore what’s happening within the hospitals when it’s the doctors and nurses that are actually seeing the increase in hospitalizations and the decrease in available beds….and are the ones asking people to vaccinate, mask and be of help.
Only when their families are directly impacted will they change their views.
But all of this has been said before…and here we are still.

I am so glad for both the comments. I had several doctor appointments about a month ago and asked every doctor and their staff if they were vaccinated. The docs all were, PAs and techs were not. They got mad at me that I asked and now everyone is out sick. I spent 40 yrs as a nurse and would be furious if I were working today. I would give them all a tank and a mask and send them home. The nurses and docs on covid wards should not be put to risk taking care idiots. And yes, those health care providers that did not get the vaccine should be on the front line caring for the other idiots.

I drive through the parking lot of Lake Imaging at the Sharon Morse center every few days because that's how you get to Publix, Subway, the Chinese restaurant, my audiologist, my regular doctor, by golf cart.

I haven't seen the windows blacked out, I've seen patients go in and out, cars driving up to the curb to pick people up and drop them off, employees coming and going with take-out coffee (indicating they're probably planning on staying there awhile). My doctor is available, so is my audiologist. Lake Imaging DOES have tinted windows, so maybe the OP is just confusing "made intentionally difficult to see inside" with "blacked out and closed?"

If the vaccine works you have nothing to fear. :(

The vaccine works to minimize risk to the person who is vaccinated, and to minimize symptoms when you happen to be among those who contract the illness as a result of the vaccine being "less than zero risk."

The vaccine does -not- work to protect anyone who is NOT vaccinated, until/unless there is herd immunity. And there is still no herd immunity.

So all the people who CHOOSE not to be vaccinated, who don't already have antibodies, are actually at greater risk of contracting COVID because of the current variants.

People who CANNOT vaccinate, are at even greater risk than that. They are the ones who NEED the herd immunity protection most, because they are the most vulnerable with the fewest options.

The vaccine also doesn't work to provide enough hospital staff to cover the additional burden placed on the facilities when an influx of patients with COVID shows up sick. The vaccine also doesn't work to ventilate patients who can't breathe as a result of COVID pneumonia.

What the vaccine DOES do, is provide a means to achieve herd immunity. What it DOESN'T do, is achieve that herd immunity unless at least 80% (more, but I don't know the exact percentage) of the ENTIRE population - not just the population of one community in one state - is vaccinated.

Hospitals will continue being overburdened until the virus is no longer able to mutate. That will happen when more than 80% of the country is vaccinated.

I have news for you. Herd immunity is not going to happen. The Delta variant and the ones that come after it are breaking through the vaccines and will become better at doing this. Covid will become endemic and will probably require shots every year like the flu.

I have had a family member hospitalized at The Villages Hospital since it was taken over by the medical group from University of Florida. They now run both The Villages Hospital and Leesburg Hospital.

It seemed alright to me. Keep in mind it is a smallish community hospital, not Johns Hopkins, Boston General, Cedars of Sinai.

Also to those who do not understand how it works. Hospital groups rent the buildings. The building in The Villages was built and is owned by the Morse bunch. They have NOTHING to do with running it. I think UF Medical Group is pretty good. People often took their folks to Gainesville for serious stuff.

I can't remember when University of Florida took over the operation of The Villages Hospital.......Three or four years ago now?

Unfortunately this is the reality. 85-90% of people globally need antibodies for Delta herd immunity.

Sadly most everyone will get COVID antibodies via vaccination or infection. The later has a twenty fold higher risk of severity and hospitalizations.

An increased focus on therapeutics seems wise at this point.

Yikes! That’s enough to strike fear and loathing into just about anyone, but I’ve got a story of my own.

I had a kidney stone removal procedure that was done in in late July at an outpatient surgery center. No one was wearing masks, no one was freaking out and the place was busy. Went this past Thursday to the Brownwood Specialty center for a follow up visit. Business as usual, which is to say, very busy, although they are requiring masks again. They had their own supply for the many people that were coming in maskless. No trouble scheduling another follow up, no mention of COVID, no one freaking out. (I still think anything other than N95 is window dressing)

I personally know several people who have had COVID just recently, so it’s a safe assumption that it was the delta. Each and every one of them had the equivalent of a head cold and were back at their normal routines within two weeks. The one neighbor I know of who died with COVID almost a year ago had a host of other health issues. His entire household caught it and and they all experienced flu-like symptoms and recovered.

I’m not saying we have to “pick a side”. I’m saying that both stories can be true at the same time. We do have enough data to know that older people or those of any age who are fat or have underlying conditions are more likely to have a bad outcome.

We each have to assess our risk tolerance and should act accordingly. Our best weapon against COVID at this point seems to be the vax, and other than a legit medical reason for declining, anyone choosing not to vax is shortsighted and foolish IMO.

Positive tests and death counts are great at ginning up the fear and making people retreat to their political corners. I wonder what reaction Americans would have if we had media constantly broadcasting that nearly 8000 die every day in the USA from various causes.

As I was enjoying my early morning coffee in my lanai I watched as a bright white light streaked across the sky and disappeared. That was at 5:35am this morning. Kept watching out for more but was disappointed. No worries about Covid, just wondering if the early morning airlines noticed the meteor as it crossed their paths. Never gave it much thought in the past and I was not concerned about Covid this morning either. I do hope that more folks will stay home where it is safe. It makes grocery shopping much nicer when there are no lines at the register.

I fail to see where I have made any comparison between the US and any other country. Rather I cited not facts but the experiences of family members living in those countries. I am Canadian and have lived there for periods of time. I have no reason to doubt the experiences of my family members in such diverse places as England, Russia, Ukraine, Australia, Costa Rica, Argentina, and one cousin and his family who lived in Kenya for seven years. If someone wishes to intimate that they are being less than truthful about their lives in their countries because it doesn't fit their propaganda, that's someone's problem, not theirs. Agreed that it is not your duty to be charitable in any way.

We once had guests visiting from a distance who stayed with their son and daughter-in-law who had just bought a home near us, and our friends asked if their children could join them visiting. Yes, of course. The kids were very young, and she was very pregnant, and the conversation indicated a surprise pregnancy. However, they declared themselves 'libertarians' who refuse to take anything from the government, even though they were living on a financial edge, as they explained.

Anything at all?

No, nothing!

What about a governmental service that YOU paid for, like unemployment insurance. The premiums are deducted from your paycheck.

It's still from the government, and we wouldn't take it.

How did you manage to buy a house? Mom & Dad?

(Sheepishly) Yes, we borrowed the down payment from them.

And the mortgage?

Oh, as first time home buyers we qualified for an FHA loan! [FHA = Federal Housing Authority—emphasis mine]

[To myself] That means that you and I are paying for their mortgage! The height of hypocrisy....

You are exactly correct. A friend of mine's father broke his shoulder and there wasn't a hospital that would take him within 100 miles of TV. They are all full of covid patients. There is more than the Delta variant. There is now 13 additional variants as well which are in the United States.

All viruses mutate constantly if and when they are replicating in a host body. The more people infected, the more chances the virus has to evolve through the process known as mutation. That is why it is important for people to get vaccinated. When the virus does not have a host it can't mutate. That is why it is hard for me to understand why Florida has so many people against wearing a mask to curb the viral load and stop the spread as well as those refusing to get vaccinated. Science is how we got past polio and measles. People wear seat belts for safety but stop at engaging in standard medical practices that will save lives. It is very hard for me to understand.

Illegal immigrants are the immediate problem because they bring new Covid variants into the country which our vaccines are powerless against.

I have news for you. Herd immunity is not going to happen. The Delta variant and the ones that come after it are breaking through the vaccines and will become better at doing this. Covid will become endemic and will probably require shots every year like the flu.

Which is fine - I'll get a shot every year (and those shots are called vaccines). I get the flu vaccine every year, this'll just be another sore-arm day out of the year.

My rights are not subject to your phobias.Your “rights” don’t supersede public health necessities. We live in a community and have to abide by laws and restrictions put in place for the common good. We stop at stop signs and obey traffic signals. You don’t have the right to drive anywhere you want or at any speed. We don’t drink while driving or face arrest. We wear seatbelts, our kids get certain vaccinations before they attend school, etc. We can’t smoke in certain public places so that others may not have to breathe second hand smoke. The list goes on and on. The Covid vaccinations are no different.

There is a lot of evidence that this virus is air borne not droplet borne which makes the masks useless.

Should people get vaccinated? In my opinion, yes. Should business and the government mandate it and threaten to fire you or worse? Absolutely NO, This is NOT Russia, China, Cuba or Iran, THIS IS THE USA.

where you can't go to elementary school without MANDATED vaccines.

thank you to the OP who gave some eye opening facts. I looked up hospital capacity and found this:
COVID-19 Hospital Capacity of UF HEALTH THE VILLAGES HOSPITAL in THE VILLAGES, FL): Data indicates the hospital's bed occupancy, but do not represent local hospitals surge plans to accommodate more patients. | rgj.com (https://data.rgj.com/covid-19-hospital-capacity/facility/uf-health-the-villages-hospital/100290/)

July 30, 2021 256.0 104.5% 230.0 of 220.0 beds used 91.6% 29.3 of 32.0 beds used
as of July 30 this is the The Villages Hospital

so everyone should hope they don't need a hospital bed for anything.....but yeah, it's those people on the southern border that's the problem....

Please stop posting ..edited.. on this website. While it is your "right' to do so, you are showing your ignorance when you think you are showing your brilliance. Funny how you just post stuff but never have any links to explain what "real science" is giving you this special wisdom. If you think is it so clever to quibble about the definition of a vaccine, maybe you'd care to explain what disease ever was named "Small Pox"?? I've heard of smallpox, but I've never read anything about Small Pox. Normally I'd certainly let that kind of error pass, but you deserve special scrutiny and derision.

Wrong. It is a vaccine. Who says it's a vaccine. Well, the CDC Understanding mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/mrna.html), the Mayo Clinic COVID-19 vaccines: Get the facts, (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/coronavirus-vaccine/art-20484859) Johns Hopkins (https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines-myth-versus-fact) COVID-19 Vaccines: Myth Versus Fact and every responsible medical institution and authority. But you know better.

Ignorance again. It induces immunity to the spike protein which is a critical structure on the surface of the virion by having your body produce spike proteins so that when the real intact virus invades you, your immune system is primed and recognizes the spike protein as a foreign antigen to be attacked. You do NOT produce Covid virus itself from the vaccination, oh, sorry, from the "shot"
DIFFERENT DEFINITION:

First, although the whole world is calling it a vaccine, it’s not because it doesn’t do what all vaccines do. I looked up the definition of vaccines in five medical dictionaries and found all five were the same, but completely different from the COVID-19 solution, as shown below:

Online Medical Dictionary

Vaccine: “Suspensions of killed or attenuated microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa), antigenic proteins, synthetic constructs, or other bio-molecular derivatives, administered for the prevention, amelioration, or treatment of infectious and other diseases.”

Taber’s Online Medical Dictionary

Vaccine: “Any suspension containing antigenic molecules derived from a microorganism, given to stimulate an immune response to an infectious disease. Vaccines may be made from weakened or killed microorganisms; inactivated toxins; toxoids derived from microorganisms; or immunologically active surface markers extracted or copied from microorganisms. They can be given intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intradermally, orally, or intranasally; as single agents; or in combinations.”

Medicinenet Medical Dictionary

Vaccine: “Microbial preparations of killed or modified microorganisms that can stimulate an immune response in the body to prevent future infection with similar microorganisms. These preparations are usually delivered by injection.”

Harvard Medical School Harvard Health Publishing

Vaccination: “A method of protecting the body against disease by injecting parts or all of a microorganism that will cause the body to develop antibodies against the microorganism and later fight off disease.”

The Free Medical Dictionary by Farlex

Vaccine: “a suspension of attenuated or killed microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, or rickettsiae), administered for prevention, amelioration, or treatment of infectious diseases.”

In every definition I found, vaccines inject parts or all of a microorganism, such as viruses and bacteria, into our body to stimulate our development of antibodies to fight the microorganism and build up our immune system, but COVID-19 injections don’t work that way. Instead of injecting microorganisms, they inject genetic material, a strand of synthesized messenger RNA, called mRNA, that gives instructions to the cells of our body to produce the antigenic substances, such as viral protein snippets or fragments, to cause our body to develop antibodies to fight against those same substances that our body created. (Source: mayo.edu)

Since the COVID-19 solution doesn’t fit the definition of a vaccine, calling it that is misleading and dangerous because it makes it sound like a known thing and a safe thing since vaccines have been around for a long time, but it’s actually an unknown thing that’s making unprecedented changes to our God-given genetic code, literally rewriting our genetic code and nothing like it has ever been done before. In the interest of public health safety, it should be called what it really is, which is mRNA gene modification, but that would surely raise concerns and decrease the number of people willing to take it because the risk would be visible for everyone to see, but at least then everyone could make an informed decision as to whether or not they want to be human guinea pigs.

Misnaming it as a vaccine is a big win for Big Pharma corporations hoping to sell more of their products, but thousands of the world’s top medical doctors and scientists, including virologists, immunologists, pharmacologists and microbiologists, such as the ten listed below, are warning that it’s a big risk to the rest of us because inserting manipulated mRNA code into our cells will replicate the new instructions into every cell of our body so that when we later encounter a new virus, instead of fighting it in just one part of our body like we would normally do, such as an upper respiratory virus, all parts of our body will start producing antigenic substances at the same time, thereby causing our immune system to be overwhelmed and continue being overwhelmed until all our strength is depleted, ultimately causing death.

Is this better

So you want people to use hydroxychloroquine (that's already been tested and found lacking---Florida has about a million doses it doesn't know what to do with) and a heartworm medicine instead of a scientifically tested vaccine that has now been used in multiple millions of people? As a pharmacist I was always amazed at patients who didn't want to take proven, fda approved medications, but willingly took multiple unregulated herbal supplements.

Exactly!

I just don’t get it.

This is a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Now they are dancing in their joyous frenzy about breakthroughs — that they started.

I have two close friends who cannot convince some of their adult kids to get the vaccine, not even to protect their own children and the grandparents.

(Hey, maybe people who have adult children who are risking their families in the name of what looks a lot like a cult mentality should start changing their wills and trusts to require proof of vaccination from heirs.

Or — as a first step — a warning shot — at least, if a few of those advertising lawyers ran ads it might help. . . “Is your adult child refusing to get the vaccine? What! Are they trying to kill you? Is your unvaccinated adult kid neglecting the health of your grandchildren by refusing to do what they can to protect them from the virus? What! Could their refusal to vaccinate lead to a form of negligent homicide for you and your beloved. Well, make an appointment now before it’s too late!)

What is it in their psychological make-up that has made these people so susceptible to being manipulated by their screens of choice. They are being had.

The part of all this divide that I absolutely cannot comprehend is why are those people refusing to protect their own families by doing the best they can, by weighing Risk vs. Benefit, and drawing logical conclusions. The vaccine is the best we’ve got. We sure don’t have each other.

Hmmm, maybe there is one of those tiny, little computer things that has been hidden deep inside their “My Pillow” to play barely audible, subliminal, paranoia-inducing messages while they sleep.

I think you are confused. You don't know how many of the new cases are of fully vaccinated people because the CDC is not posting those numbers. Israel, UK etc are reporting large percentages of new cases among the fully vaccinated. They may not get very sick and die but they are carriers that spread the disease.

The Delta variant developed in India before vaccines were available, so trying to blame that on vaccine hesitant Americans is ludicrous.

CDC is not posting those numbers because the numbers aren't reliable. They would know the number of positive test results but not how many infections might go untested and therefore unreported. Rather than subject themselves to criticism that they under-reported the numbers, they chose to go with the more meaningful and more accurate count of hospitalizations and deaths.

Vaccinated people can test positive in rare cases, that's a fact. It is speculation that vaccinated people can infect others.

No one is saying the US unvaccinated people created Delta and it's ridiculous to imply that. It is the spread of delta in the US and filing the hospitals in the US that is the problem and the unvaccinated are the cause of that.

The problem with covid was never the number of positive tests, the problem with covid was the number of patients in the hospital, ER, and ICU and the number of deaths. At last count, all but 8,500 of these were unvaccinated. There is nothing the vaccinated can do to keep unvaccinated out of the hospital. On the other hand, it has been proven over and over that the vaccine can prevent serious illness, hospitalization, and death.

CDC COVID Data Tracker (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#trends_dailytrendscases)

Vaccinated people can test positive in rare cases, that's a fact. It is speculation that vaccinated people can infect others

Totally inaccurate: Israel reported 7700 new cases (May to mid July) and 40% were fully vaccinated. Just the other day, Duke and UNC reported clusters of student infections, 100% vaccinated. See my threads on this with links.

I guess you are calling the CDC speculators?

Vaccinated People With Breakthrough Infections Can Spread The Delta Variant, CDC Says

Glad it wasn't that bad for you. Unfortunately, it was very bad for those that died...and their families.

I know 3 people who have died (no pre-existing conditions) and one person in ICU for 4 months who now has long COVID. Good that yours was mild, not all cases are, as per the total deaths so far.

When the pandemic started, the government was covering out of pocket hospitalization expenses for patients if your insurance fell short. Now they are scaling back and many insurance companies are reinstating their deductibles.

If you're uninsured you may end up with the bill. Since an option is there to minimize hospitalization, there's no longer a reason to supplement those patients by the government.

Some insurances are considering collecting extra charges for the unvaccinated to cover their higher costs of care if they're hospitalized for Covid. Similar to additional fees for smoker's.

I wish the OP would respond to those two posts. All I can say is that as of this morning there are 40 ICU beds in Sumter Co. and 12 are empty. I highly doubt they were airlifting acute MI's to Miami.

Story in WFLA news today Sumter Co. Data released showed that 83.9 percent of Florida hospital beds are in use. 28 % of those are Covid cases. More than half of the ICU beds were being taken by Covid patients with only 7.8% of ICU beds available. I doubt The Villages are except from these statistics, can anyone who works at FHV Villages hospital comment?

Sounds like a SUPER SPREADER practice that is continuously ongoing. But, that's OK since everyone gets a free paper mask at Walmart when they enter :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

I got a call on SATURDAY from Florida Cancer Specialists asking if I could change my
Monday appointment to another day due to a staffing shortage.
Your post make a lot a sense now why they wanted to change my scheduled appointment.

Politics aren't allowed on here.

Agree with most of what you have to say. Unfortunately, we do not live in a vacuum. Several weeks ago I had a high blood pulse and was told to go to the ER ASAP. Went to The Villages and arrived at 6 PM. Waiting room was packed and was told no beds. They were shuffling people in and out of the waiting room for tests, x rays etc. After being checked for 8 hours told that I should have been admitted but no beds. They did offer to keep me in the ER hallway(try to get some sleep there).Inquired about Leesburg and was told they were full also. Hate to say what would have happened in the winter.

TV might be very good for vaccinations but there are other areas/other people who will impact us.

I am more concerned too. Three people in my inner circle have the breakthough illness after having had both vaccines.

We had been freely going to the rec centers. A neighbor caught his case at a rec center, four others tested positive there. My good friend has it now and she said she has been very tired, coughing, nose running and a fever. I am glad to know that none of us who have been vaccinated are in great danger for hospitalization, but no one wants to be sick from this.

Fortunately I’m in Rhode Island and Connecticut seems they are treating it more serious than Florida infections and hospitalizations are extremely low and YES we do have ANTIVAXERS/Antimaskers who seem to contribute to the statistics. Reading the local Florida news from Miami to North Florida. 5 police officers died with a week S Florida, non vaccinated, another women hospitalized for Covid finds out husband died at home with Covid. Mother has 2 sons die within 12 hours being vaccine eligible refused shots. Morgues Mortuaries stacking up with dead bodies soon FEMA to start supplying refrigeration trucks.
It’s only a mask and only now an improved vaccine and then there is the big BUT, BUT, BUT.
Wish Boogie a quick recovery and rehab!
If you want to be in crowds not attempt to wear a mask the so be it. The only thing worse than a lockdown and wearing a mask is DEATH.
And 2 ANTIVAXER Conservative radio talk show hosts Phil Valentine and Dick Farrel died since August 1st from covid. I know SO WHAT.

Get vaccinated wear kn95 mask. Get booster. It’s simple. I’m sitting in the hospital on my 11th day recovering from Covid. The vaccine saved my life. I wish I had the brains to wear a protective mask.
Do what you want but believe me you don’t want to end up like me.
I’ll still have weeks of rehab and recovery once I get home and could have permanent lung damage.
But you do whatever you want.

Sorry to hear this news. You are a good person and The Villages is a better place with you in it.

We both wish you a speedy recovery.

Who knows how many people you may have saved with your post. All the best.

Glad to know you're on the mend. I use surgical masks. I also have a cloth mask that has a pocket for a filter, but I'm satisfied that using a surgical mask, plus being vaccinated, plus doing what *I* can to socially distance, is enough. I also wash my hands more than I used to. I don't use "sanitizer" though, I'm allergic and it makes my skin blister and peel. I do have alcohol wipes and lemon-scented alcohol-based wetnaps and keep them in my purse, and use a couple every day randomly.

I've been exposed to COVID-19 over the past year. Thankfully I haven't been sick. I also haven't been tested. I keep thinking that nose-swab thing is gonna make my nose bleed for sure (I have a deviated septum and the bleeders can erupt just by taking an aspirin).

In facilities Code Black is standard for Impending Weather Issue.
Code Black is used as overhead paging to announce possible tornado, severe storm are in immediate area.

Employee’s are not allowed to leave during a Code Black, until all clear is announced. Term has been standard in multiple facilities in different states, I have worked at over 40 years. In the last month we a had Code Black 4 times, that can make a 12 hour shift very long.

Little surprised the doctor would use the same terminology as a severe weather alert. There is a code usually for no beds, ED full, water issues, infant abduction, so on. All codes are on employee badges for reference

Since the original theme of this thread is the scarcity of hospital beds because of Covid, what would you do in this situation. You are in charge of triage at a hospital with only one open bed. There are two very sick patients with Covid that both desperately need a bed. Both patients are basically identical except one is fully vaccinated and the other is not vaccinated by choice. Who would you give the bed to?

Oath to do no harm, comes to play. Patient that is most critical is first. You don’t ever judge a patient by race, religion, insurance, or in this case vaccinated or not. No patient is identical when a diagnosis for Critical care

I’m fully vaccinated. I woke up with a stuffy nose. By lunch time I was feeling like crap so I got tested. I got the positive results the next day and my condition continued to deteriorate. A few days later I was taken by ambulance to the ER. They released me with some meds. A few days later I was back in the ER with a fever of 104. After 36 hours in the ER I was admitted to the hospital where I spent the next 12 days. I was sent home on oxygen and have been doing rehab at home. It’s going to be a long recovery and I might have permanent lung damage. I was told that had I not been vaccinated I would most likely be dead now. So yes, in many cases it’s not that bad. But when it’s bad it’s horrendous.

Almost 100% of Covid deaths are unvaccinated. As someone who is alive because I am vaccinated I take issue with people who make unsubstantiated claims about the vaccines and government conspiracies.

PS: I am sorry we have to put up with those who keep taking shots at the obvious stats that are clearly showing ICU beds are being filled by the unvaccinated — by a very large percentage.

I don’t know why they think hospitals across the entire country are telling lies. I keep thinking that maybe the Covid deniers are so hellbent on validating their own behaviors with Facebook garbage and other screens — where they allow themselves to be manipulated by master puppeteers —that they are now forever lost in the wilderness. The psychology of their obsession would be fascinating if the rest of us were not caught in it.

This morning on CBS, there was a report from a regional hospital in Medford, Oregon, that is being overrun in their ICU — with unvaccinated Covid patients.

The nurses and doctors interviewed used the phrase “collateral deaths” because they are worried about non-Covid patients dying because they have no room. They have had to postpone more than 100 heart surgeries (from the general population of patients) because they cannot give them the care they will need.

That 100 number surprised me so much that I hit rewind. The number was right. That hospital — alone — has more than 100 non-Covid people needing a valve surgery, or any heart surgery, who are unable to get their surgeries because of the unvaccinated Covid patients hogging beds and exhausting medical staff.

I also cannot comprehend why parents do not make sure their kids are surrounded by vaccinated adults. These people will not even try to protect their own children by getting the vaccine as the adults in the family. Kids have no choice. They are at the mercy of parental decisions. And what if the unvaccinated parent dies of Covid — when they could have stayed around with their children — had they not been under the influence of conspiracy theories and calculated dysinformation.

I appreciate the fact that Delta Airlines is raising insurance premiums by 200 dollars a month for employees that refuse to be vaccinated. (Of course, they might have to make medical exceptions, real ones.) But I hope more private businesses do the same. The rest of us do not need to be paying higher premiums for freeloaders who get Covid — after refusing to be vaccinated. . .The time has come for more employers to play hardball.

(Dr. Boogie, please forgive the rant, here added to my get well wishes for you, but I am on your side. Please get better every day.)

Aces4,

You are missing the point — possibly on purpose.

What I said was that it is the UNvaccinated Covid patients who are taking over ICUs throughout the country. The stats clearly show that fact.

AND — now there are very real, very serious concerns over “collateral deaths” — revisit my post above about the postponed heart surgeries — and those 100 are postponed by just one hospital. Imagine how many more there are throughout the country.

The Huge and Overwhelming percentage of those who are in hospital beds are the UNvaccinated. That was my point. It is the UNvaccinated who are exhausting the system. Your takeoff was purely extraneous — straight out of the Yeah, But Factory, Inc.

Boomer

(I don’t know if what was posted to me — quoted above — is an attempt at obfuscation in order to self-validate vaccine denial — or if it is just an attempt to pass the time messing with people. . .What I do know though is that I need to not engage further in this back and forth. There would be no point.)

. . .Aw, geez, I do not know why that little blushing emoticon is at the beginning of my post. I guess I bumped something on my iPad. I cannot make it go away here in editing mode. Believe you me, my post is not making me blush.

On purpose? This is your statement indicating parents who don’t keep their children away from the unvaccinated are horrible. My point is those same children can be exposed to covid through a vaccinated adult who can carry this virus. Don’t parents have enough on their plates these days without trying to screen each individual with whom their children may come in contact?

On purpose? This is your statement indicating parents who don’t keep their children away from the unvaccinated are horrible. My point is those same children can be exposed to covid through a vaccinated adult who can carry this virus. Don’t parents have enough on their plates these days without trying to screen each individual with whom their children may come in contact?

You are taking my post and picking one part out of context. How conveeeeeenient. . .

On this part though, I can see a clarification could be in order — now that you are looking at just one part. “Surround” was not the clearest word-choice I could have made. Of course, a parent cannot control it all, but you would think they would want to do everything they could to stay well for their children’s sake. I was thinking of the family unit as surrounding.

What I cannot figure out is why so many parents will not get the vaccine themselves. The death of a parent is devastating to a child. A seriously ill parent is not easy on kids either and this one could be prevented for most adults — if they would just take actual medical advice. But they insist on playing the odds. I guess screeching at school board meetings makes them feel important, too.

The fact remains that it is the unvaccinated who are causing the biggest part of this mess we are in as a country. They will not take medical advice, but they will go to a feed store and load up on livestock dewormer to take for Covid. This tribal behavior is like the plot of some surreal, dystopian movie that goes on and on.

(Aaaaaaugh!! I took your bait. Damn. Please put me on your ignore list. Thank you.)

Your very simple message and facts, are ones that anti-vaxxers do not want to acknowledge and are desperate to try and deflect from. I can't imagine having a loved one who can't undergo a life-saving procedure, because those who chose not to be vaccinated are occupying all of the ICU beds. Talk about the epitome of selfishness.

I’m taking nothing out of context and therein lies the point of this discussion. How are the unvaccinated causing the biggest part of the mess when covid can remain in everyone, even though vaccinated, and continue to morph? This is the point!

Pro-vaccination pushers truly believe vaccinations will eradicate this beast and to date, this has not proven to be true. You or I, both vaccinated, may be non-symptomatic carriers of the covid virus right now. And the vulnerable and not so vulnerable, as Winston appears to be, will still contract covid and it will continue to morph. Covid at this point isn’t going anywhere and the pro-vaccinators aren’t helping the cause by insisting covid will be totally eradicated by vaccination.

Please provide the HUGH and OVERWHELMING numbers of the unvaccinated with covid in ICU at this time. Numbers seem to be missing for these stats and it will better your argument. I would also like to see all the numbers of the vaccinated who ended up in ICU with covid.

CDC numbers August 16, 2021: The CDC received reports from 49 states of 9,716 patients with covid vaccine breakthrough illness who were hospitalized or died. Those numbers alone would plug ICUs. It is a disgusting, difficult disease and probably limiting activities, masking and social distancing will help one avoid it but right now it is in control. Will life ever become normal again, your guess is as good as mine.

Be honest, you really don't want to see those numbers and you would deny them if you did. If you really wanted them you would refer to local newspaper articles for Florida numbers or national papers for US numbers or you would look at the WaPo, NYT, or CDC Covid tracking pages.

As was stated, facts matter.

CDC numbers AS OF August 16, 2021. 9,716 patients since vaccinations began eight months ago, not on one day alone.

Current US hospitalizations: 101,050 hospitalized, 25,064 in ICU. There was no breakdown of vaccinated or unvaccinated so we'll have to see what happens when the CDC updates their tracking page.

I love the people who have posted that the vaccinated can get and spread COVID. Yes they can-----for the original strain it was 0.07% breakthrough. For delta--they haven't posted stats, but at 100 x the rate, which would be high, it is still only 7%. For the UNvaccinated it is probably 99+%.

These two groups ARE NOT equivalent, either in numbers or ability to contract and spread COVID, not to mention the unvaccinated are far more likely to get sick, get hospitalized, and die.

Survival rate is another factor. A lot of people do not acknowledge the long term effects and associated costs with the people who do get sick and do not die.

I agree and I hope people will get vaccinated, however, I will not blame the unvaccinated for what has occurred and is occurring.

A family friend, at age 85, had covid last year and recovered without hospitalization. Medical history is diabetes and a stroke from which he recovered prior to covid. He has refused vaccination and I think we should be allowed to choose.

I love people who indicate that being vaccinated means you are less likely to carry the virus. You don’t have to be sick with covid to carry the virus from what I read. Non symptomatic vaccinated individuals can carry it the same as the unvaccinated. If everyone in the USA was vaccinated today we would still have covid, there will still be ICU treatment of it and deaths from it. It is tiresome listening to all this over bloated conversations stating all the covid issues are from the unvaccinated. That’s a total lie.

An article in a science magazine puts out a grim warning coming out of Israel, stating vaccination blunts but can not defeat Delta. Israel has the highest percentage of vaccinated from those 12 and older. They are now registering one of the world’s highest infection rates.

True, except not at the rate of the unvaccinated. As posted above-----original strain---0.07% of the vaccinated, who knows for delta but looks like well under 10%. For the unvaccinated----99+%.

So yes, the vaccinated ARE LESS LIKELY to carry the virus

Just look at the data of who is hospitalized and who dies---over 90% are unvaccinated. So yes, most current COVID issues are among the unvaccinated

Overwhelmingly, the "issues" that affect me, filling hospital beds and deaths, are due to unvaccinated individuals.

Vaccination alone will only kill COVID if herd immunity is reached (if possible). Time will tell. But we can reduce hospitalizations and deaths dramatically if everyone gets vaccinated.

I agree with this but if the vaccinated still carry and spread the virus and have breakthrough covid, we’re chasing our tails currently.

In early August Johns Hopkins pointed out information reported by the CDC shows vaccinated people infected with the Delta variant carry covid viral loads comparable to theunvaccinated.

People believe Covid is a hoax.

People believe the vaccine doesn't work.

People believe the vaccinated can become infected and spread Covid as easily as the unvaccinated.

People believe the earth is flat, Elvis is alive, and man never walked on the moon.

We can quibble over the definition of "non-issue" but if 100M or so more Americans were vaccinated we wouldn't hear about hospitals being full or liquid oxygen supplies being depleted and we probably wouldn't hear about masks in schools.

I plead unaware here, do you mean the people vaccinated against smallpox continued to carry the variola virus and spread it in the fashion covid 19 does? And, if so, we were still able to eradicate smallpox everywhere for the most part?

Also, after vaccination did breakthrough cases of smallpox continue to occur?

LOVE Ayn Rand; there is MUCH to be learned from those who "lived it", also applies to Cuban refuges who "try desperately" to tell us what happens when we don't pay attention to who we allow to be in change of our community, our lives, our courts, and our various levels of government. Some become so "loyal" to a certain party they become ideologues and have no idea how to begin to vet an individual for those qualities that REALLY matter. We have a frightening lack of individuals with deep ethical values in ALL political parties. We the people seem to more and more be "asleep at the wheel", and seem to be willing to settle for just anyone who will do these "political" jobs, from school board, to city clerk to president of the United States... most people will spend more time researching brand of automobiles and deciding on a color for their purchase, than they are willing to devote time to to do research and analysis, searching public records, searching judicial records, etc. for those they wish to put in charge of their entire lives and families ! To quote an often used teenage phrase: Go figure ? ?

Data concerning viral load in vaccinated individuals is lacking since the final push against this disease started in 1967, the last case reported was in 1977 and the WHO declared it eradicated in 1980

The disease was transmitted in a similar fashion to COVID---aerosol droplets, although contaminated objects also played a role in smallpox as opposed to COVID.
There were also breakthrough cases---vaccinated people who got the disease---but like COVID, they had mild cases that were mistaken for chickenpox.

To put it in perspective, it was estimated in the last 100 years of its existence smallpox killed 500 million worldwide, and in 1967 alone killed 15 million. It has a mortality rate of 30% (as compared to 0.5-2.0% for COVID.

Admittedly, we had an advantage over smallpox---just like COVID we had a highly effective vaccine and transmission was only person to person. But in addition smallpox had no known animal reservoirs. I also don't remember any smallpox "anti-vaxxers" screaming their heads off about nonsense. In some ways, no internet was a good thing.

They are both viruses from 2 different viral families
They both had effective vaccines
they were both primarily spread by aerosols/droplets
Smallpox had a small # of breakthrough cases that were mild
COVID has a small # of breakthrough cases that are also milder (but with the new variants the final numbers are not yet in)

Smallpox had no animal reservoirs
And to my knowledge, smallpox did not have a hoard of anti-vaxxers

And like all pandemics, this one will end as well, and much quicker than hundreds of years ago due primarily to VACCINES

You told me to”try googling smallpox”. I did and did not see a correlation to covid even though you went on to state how they were transmitted similarily to which I thought there are no oozing wounds from covid to help with transmission and also very few break through cases. I did not read anywhere that successfully vaccinated smallpox individuals continued to shed the virus. You felt we had an advantage over smallpox — just like covid we had a highly effective vaccine. The vaccine for smallpox was FAR more effective than it currently is for covid. You made the comparison to the smallpox cure as soon as I mentioned we are chasing our tails. I don’t think Winston feels his breakthrough event was mild and some have died, even though vaccinated.

OK, let's try this again. You make it sound like EVERYONE who is vaccinated is a breakthrough case and is busy spreading COVID. That's not the case, only a small percentage of those vaccinated are COVID positive. It also doesn't matter if they carry the same "viral loads", they still have to unload it on a susceptible individual. And that's why we will eventually rid ourselves of this pandemic with vaccination. The more vaccinated, the less potential hosts, simple. Even with the same breakthrough percentage, there are less and less people with breakthrough as more and more get vaccinated.
You must also remember, and this is an advanced concept so pay attention, that in order to spread, the virus must be expelled by the host during the limited number of days that he/she is infective, and then find a susceptible host. Again, a numbers game. The less susceptible hosts around, the less spread so eventually it is like putting a wet blanket on a fire. (Just like smallpox, btw).

BTW, the "oozing wounds" of smallpox did not account for significant transmission in most cases, it is primarily respiratory transmission.

I also disagree with the statement that the smallpox vaccine was "far more effective than those for COVID". Since the COVID vaccines are probably the most effective ever developed, that statement is unlikely, unless you have a legitimate source you would like to share

I’m not sure Russian Roulette is the proper term. People who play that game only put their own lives at risk. The unvaccinated are worse, they put the general population at risk by providing the virus more opportunities to mutate and they wind up monopolizing the available hospital beds, putting unselfish and responsible vaccinated people unnecessarily at a greater risk.

Excellent point and you are correct. Using RR as an example, because it only affects one person - is not appropriate in this case.

Really???? Did I state that???? Let's see. I reviewed the post and hmmm, yep, I NEVER SAID THAT

It was an ANOLOGY (yep, sure it's short but still a 4 syllable word so I understand the confusion).

Get it now?

Do you get it? We have open borders, unvaccinated entry daily and a huge population out there with covid vaccine breakthrough and continued viral load in the vaccinated. Small pox vaccination was begun approximately in 1802 and was finally eradicated in 1976 with no mammal/animal transmission.

BTW, smallpox vaccine is the only vaccine to ever eradicate a disease.

Thank you for the laugh, we needed some levity.

Per Pew Research:

Migrant encounters at U.S.-Mexico border are at a 21-year high,

The U.S. Border Patrol reported nearly 200,000 encounters with migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border in July, the highest monthly total in more than two decades.

Per CNN:

The CBP told CNN that migrants taken into custody are required to wear face masks provided by the agency and that if "anyone exhibits signs of illness in CBP custody, they are referred to local health systems for appropriate testing, diagnosis, and treatment."

*Required to wear face masks... which golfing eagles has told us do not provide protection from covid.

Per CBS August 10th, 2021:

So many people are crossing into the U.S. right now, there's no room for them in actual buildings, and with COVID in mind, decision-makers believe this is the best option.

Once agents process those migrants, most will board buses and head to a local park turned into a temporary tent city, run by the city of McAllen and Catholic Charities. The first thing that happens straight off the bus is COVID testing.

Catholic Charities Director Sister Norma Pimentel told CBS News correspondent Mireya Villarreal migrants testing positive for COVID has been overwhelming.

"It got to a point where that space is not even that readily available because there are so many of them," Pimentel said.

The Center for Immigration Studies estimates that approximately only 68% of illegal border crossers may be caught and that estimate may be low.
