I was the Honda Goldwing trike taking the right hand turn on Islawild with my right blinker on and hand signal and you passed me in the GOLF CART LANE, YES GOLF CART LANE. OP, very sorry for your experience, now you know why I ALWAYS move into the golf cart lane when I am making a right turn in my car, too many drivers around here in a rush or have no idea how to drive.

No way knowing it was villager unless you followed them to their house or got license plate number and found address. I guess it was younger driver who may or may not live in villages. It certainly wasn’t the older villagers.

Cars do move into golf cart lanes when turning right. In his case he had stoopid driver behind him which I suspect young driver in big hurry or high on something. Nobody in their right mind would do that IMO.

I do not care what the law is (Golf Cart lanes are not normal) I will pull completely into the Golf Cart Lane (after checking behind me) when making a right turn.
Because Golf Carts, bikes, walkers, every contraption on wheels, etc. come out of no where in the Golf Cart Lane. Get your rear bumper to them right away then make right turn.

You have good points, I should have been a little clearer. I do NOT go into the golf cart lane to get around a vehicle making a LEFT turn, I wait behind them, however if I am in my car and making a RIGHT turn, I will place 2 wheels in the golf cart lane so there is no one beside me when I turn. This is done after making sure the lane is clear.
I have to do this as I have been passed by a golf cart (in their lane), and when I looked at my speedometer I was doing 30-31 MPH, so I completely agree, 'they come out of nowhere'!

Y'all know we're an aged community right? Eye sight, hearing, reflexes, common sense and the ability to concentrate fade with age. Get used to it and expect shiite to happen. It's no surprise to me or anyone else that stuff like this will keep happening no matter how much you complain.

And that statement is so very true. I was almost run over, while on my bicycle, by an older woman coming to get her mail. If I did not take emergency evasive maneuvers, I would either be dead on in the hospital.

I nearly T-Boned a villager darting into a handicap parking space in Publix parking lot just last week. He turned into the lane then zipped across in front of me , I missed him by maybe two feet.

This is why I would NEVER drive a motorcycle on the public roadways. Your life is in the hands of the other drivers. At least with a car you have protection of various safety devices (seat belts, air bags, etc) and thousands of pounds of aluminum and steel. No doubt motorcycles are fun to ride, but not worth it in my book. Best of luck to you and happy you are still with us.

Rode motorcycles for 50+ years in the upper midwest and like all bikers, I have my share of stories to tell. However, after riding down here for three months and witnessing the sheer stupidity of some of these so called drivers, I gave up. It's no fun dodging idiots.

We're new villagers and have already seen some crazy stuff in the roundabouts. A couple days ago a young women in a rusted out old small gray pickup full of young kids pulled out making a uwe right in front of me, fortunately no one was to the right of me and I was able to avoid a tragedy as my full size pickup is no match for that bone shaker she was in..... I seen her again yesterday driving like she was on something, with three young kids again.
I think its time to start using a dashcam. I see they're less than $50 on Amazon. One of the truck and another for the golf cart.

Regular posts as far as driving. My OPINION. Almost all accidents are avoidable. Once you accept that then everyone involved in an accident is at least partly at fault.
Regular posts about the round a bouts I always come to the same conclusion. Assuming that the people around you know what the rules are is a bit of a reach.
Assuming they know what the rules are and will follow them, is a major reach.
Being human, we see, we notice people doing stupid things. The most people driving, reasonably safely, we do not even notice.
Might be interesting to discover how many people on the roads around here could pass a driving quiz or a drivers license test. We've all seen it. How many people slow down when they see a cop? How many of us would scream if the police suddenly started strict enforcement? Be honest with yourself-turn signals? Full stop at stop signs? Posted speed? Safe speed through our congested neighborhoods? People walking on multi modal paths in places where there are side walks. People stopping in the middle of the road to gossip. People walking in golf cart tunnels. I'm sure I left out plenty.

MMP's pass through tunnels, not golf cart paths.
I have not seen a tunnel signed 'golf carts only', there may be some, but I have not seen any.
As dangerous as it may be, pedestians, cyclists are not breaking any rule by using the tunnels, only the self preservation rule!

Sadly everyone has an opinion. All of these posts we only get one side of the story.
The details are filled in with our own bias.
As described. The devil is in the details. The golf cart did not suddenly appear. Depending on position and relative speed, safe, proper driving you would either speed up to get plenty of space, that is far more than 10-20 feet before signaling both with the turn signal and your car position that you are turning. Having a debate, deciding at the last second, is not safe or proper driving.
I ride a bicycle. I've had people stop in the middle of the road blocking traffic to let me go. It is very nice of them. IT IS WRONG. They do not see that the person behind them will go into the multi modal lane to pass them. Their vision blocked by the topped car and hit a bicycle not supposed to be there.

Actually, the law is any vehicle turning right will yield to any other vehicle that is on their right. So, technically, a car must wait until the golf cart lane is clear before turning right. Disclaimer: I always keep my eyes open and ready to brake when approaching an intersection in my cart, especially when cars are on my left. I can't tell you how many times I've been cut off by a right turning auto.

I have a motorcycle which I ride on occasion and in six years have only had one close encounter of the stupid kind. At the Sumter Landing rotary, where a young girl in the right hand lane decided she was going left and I had to go with her, despite being in the left lane wanting to continue down Morse. You really have to keep an eye out and approach a rotary with much caution. But the other thing I'm surprised at is the number of folks I see riding a motorcycle with no helmet, especially here. I would not be here now, if it weren't for a helmet many, many years ago in Massachusetts. I've also learned when coming to a merge in my golf cart, to keep an eye on the cars behind me as some of them will speed up forcing a quick stop, in order to save themselves 20 seconds of their precious time. I refer to these people as inconsiderate douchebags. But it's better to give way whether in a car, motorcycle, bicycle or golf cart, then to prove you're dead right.

Sorry for the near miss. I might offer some advice considering I see this every day here in the villages. Drivers who are making right turns slow down almost to a stop and stay in the middle of the vehicular lane. They force everyone behind them to come to a stop as well. Only the do they make the right turn. It’s as if they are so stupid they think they have to come to a complete stop or their vehicle will tip over during the turn.
It makes a lot more sense, and is much safer to move over towards the shoulder and get your vehicle out of the thru lane early and make a smooth turn off.

I am afraid you are missing the point. Tinker and I both believe in the adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". What he does, and I share with him, before he turns to make a right turn, he will turn on his directional signal and segue partially into golf cart lane. By doing this we make darn certain that no one is caught off guard in their golf cart and has an accident. Got that my friend?:clap2:

Cars are supposed to merge into golf cart path to turn right. This prevents hitting one who tries to pass on the right while you are turning right. You make right hand turns FROM the right lane, not ACROSS.

At least with a car you have protection of various safety devices (seat belts, air bags, etc) and thousands of pounds of aluminum and steel. No doubt motorcycles are fun to ride, but not worth it in my book. Best of luck to you and happy you are still with us.
I've ridden for most of my adult life. Never an accident and very few close calls. After our move here I had my bike shipped from Minnesota, rode for maybe a month and sold it--had more close calls here in that time than in five years up in Minnesota.
National average, as I recall, is that you are something like 24 times as likely to die in a motorcycle accident than in a car accident. Bad enough, but a fender-bender in a car resulting in a trip to the body shop can result in a month in the hospital if you were on a bike rather than in a car. If you're lucky.
In my experience riding (and watching, when I wasn't on the bike) my thought is that the risk to bikers here in The Villages is significantly higher than the national averages, both for fatalities and bad accidents.

If you are walking (hopefully facing the oncoming traffic) on an MMP, and if it is safe to do so, step off the path into the grass when a golf cart of bicycle is coming toward you. People appreciate it.

Many folk want the gate barriers to be removed.. because they are too lazy to get their card out and swipe it.... NO WAY shoudl this ever happen. With repairs at many gates at the moment a simple stop sign MEANS NOTHING to drivers of cars or carts..... 3 near misses at Lake Miona in one day... how many gates are there !!!!!! and how many accidents would that make...... dreadful driving here....

Only move over in last 50 yards when turning right. Rest of journey would not enter cart lanes.

After reading some of these posts it is clear why I pay exactly the same to insure one car in The Villages as I do to insure three cars in NH.
The absolute lack of common sense and courtesy behind the wheel I used to see only in Miami Dade years ago has definitely migrated north!

You’re absolutely right, it’s unbelievable that many of the people who have posted here make up their rules how to drive in The Villages so THEY feel safe. Should call this The “Make Your Own Driving Rules” Villages.:ohdear:

this situation is easily remedied, don't turn right from the left hand lane, move into the right lane put on your turn signal and you'll never have this problem

If there is a golf cart lane to the right of your driving lane, you have no business pulling into the golf cart lane to turn right! You should slowdown and carefully check that lane before turning.

That's kinda what I thought.
Sounds like some say it's okay for a car to drive in the cart lane.
Solid white line.

I understand the intent/concept..................but aren't cars suppose to stay out of cart lanes??
(a serious question)
2nd Question: Car turning right at an an intersection where there is a cart lane on the right side of the road and no stop sign................doesn't the CAR have to yield to the golf cart in the lane right next to the car??
(another serious question)
I see you point when there AH in car who races ahead the golf cart then slams on brakes and turn right causing the golf cart to slam on its brakes.
If car in front and has it blinker light the cart behind obligated to avoid and accident. Now shoe on other foot the golf cart lane ends same thing cart in front has the right of way and car behind has to slow down adjust speed. The smart thing is don’t be beside someone at cross street and don’t turn left from golf cart lane, Merge first.

Think you are taking things out of context.
Don't see anyone advocating driving in cart lane.
Just last 50yards putting car across line to prevent anyone coming up fast on nearside when turning right.
Makes sense to me, law or no law.
Better safe than sorry.

Just wondering if others understood the law/rule: no cars in cart lane (or if it was jus me)

I totally agree with this type of turning. Lots of people on here do not understand this process. You're not making a right hand turn from the LEFT lane. You're driving along next to a street cart lane and merge into it when safe.

White line, no merging and cars are not allowed in the golf cart lanes, period. If you strike someone in that lane with your motor vehicle, you’re in deep trouble.

My fear about moving into the cart lane just prior to turning right opens one up to be ticketed / sued should a collision occur while your vehicle is in the cart path. There's likely a strong correlation between cart drivers that force their way into the side of a right turning car and 'victims' that will sue you for their stupidity.

Force their way, their stupidity...? You’re driving in their lane if you crossed the white line! Slow down, carefully observe traffic around you and proceed cautiously. This thread appears to be more about “me first” than the op’s original complaint of a car driving in the golf cart lane.

This is only thing I could find. In Florida handbook.
2.2 - Bike Lanes Intersections and Driveways
At intersections, always assume that bicyclists are traveling straight unless they signal otherwise. Yield to bicycles just as you would to any other vehicle. Bicyclists often ride on sidewalks and trails, so look both ways before crossing a sidewalk or trail. A bicycle may come from an unexpected direction.
A large percentage of motorist bicycle crashes occur at intersections. When making a left turn, check for and yield to bicyclists coming from the opposite direction. When making a right turn, signal your turn, check for bicyclists, and do not turn directly in front of a bicyclist. They may travel faster than you think. When a bike lane is present, signal your turn and yield to any bicyclist in the bike lane, before crossing the bike lane to enter a right turn lane. If no right turn lane is present, yield to any cyclist present in the bike lane and make your turn behind the bicyclist. Otherwise merge into the bike lane before making your turn.
Read the last sentence above when making right turn with bicycle/golf cart lanes.

From the State of Florida. com:
Bike Lanes at Intersections:
Slow down and look for bicyclists. Signal your turn prior to crossing through the bike lane at the dashed striping. Yield to any bicyclist. Complete the turn from the designated right turn lane.
If there is no right turn lane, after checking to make sure that no bicyclists are present, you may enter the bike lane at the intersection or driveway.
Note it states turn "at the dashed striping". You may enter the bike lane at the intersection and not before.

Seems we have catch 22. This was brought up few years ago and someone asked the sheriff department. They said you enter the lane so carts couldn’t pass while you’re was turning. Really no bike lanes in villages, they are are diamond lanes which cover any form of transportation.

Well, if solid white lines in Florida don’t hold any weight and the sheriff of where ever tells you to swing into a cart lane to turn right even though the State of Florida states otherwise, go for it. I wouldn’t want to be in the shoes of the driver pulling this maneuver as the inevitable accidents happen.
