Was it a contractor's low price that we have flat square sinks that you chase around to get to the drain?

I doubt that the flat bottom has anything to do with cost. It's more about a modern style. But, the builder is going to use inexpensive fixtures as their standard product.
By the way, it's called a lavatory in the bathroom because it has an overflow hole. It's called a sink in the kitchen because it doesn't have an overflow hole. At least that is the way it used to be.

Not sure as we don’t have to chase our drain in our bathroom sink. I have called it a bathroom sink my entire life. Some call it a lavatory instead of a bathroom sometimes.

Oh stop. We had the same nationally advertised brand in our Hadley house and the current one.
Nice sinks. Good sinks. Kohler.
