just watched a fairly young couple in a pickup truck pull up to our trash pile at the end of our driveway and pick through it.
clearly not residents.
I hadn't realized locals were doing this? Is this typical? Not that I really give a damn (not like they strewn the stuff about) but its not something I ever saw in the previous places I've lived

Most of the people that do that are looking for something they can use or sell off for a few dollars. They come around every garbage day where we live and I have no problem with it as long as they don't make a mess. It's much better than breaking the law to get a few dollars.

When people move, they throw out stuff. Scrappers will pick up items to resell.

A good way to get rid of things you don't want. Just put it on the curb!

We are in our northern home. Trash collection is every Tuesday and like clockwork every Monday afternoon thru evening people in pick up trucks come by to pick up mostly metal items, discarded lamps etc.

yes, good point. if I have anything that actually works, I may just stick it out in front of the trash pile. if someone else can use it or sell it, good for them.
It was just so bizarre watching this happen this morning in front of my eyes. not something I had seen before. I just happened to be at my desk, looking out the window

Once in a while you see this ,usually they come by late at night. They look for Salvageable items they may fix and resell. I usually, put the items that Could be still good in a pile next to the trash or if its a good catch for someone, I put it out a day early to see if someone is interested. Usually its gone fast. Nothing goes to waste., some ones trash is some ones treasure. I seriously have no problem with it.

If we are throwing away something that may have use to others we use the clear trash bags that used to be for recycling. It allows folks to see what’s in there without opening them.

In my city up north, dumpster diving is illegal if the garbage is on private property. You can put out a note on items available for taking though.

Wealthy? Heh. Your idea of wealth and mine are clearly miles apart. Especially since you claim to have lived in a gated upper middle-class community at some point prior to the Villages.
I grew up in a brand spanking new middle-class suburban neighborhood development in northwestern New Haven County, Connecticut. Back in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. If we put items out (as opposed to trashbags filled with actual trash), there'd usually be someone checking to see if the items were interesting enough to take. Sometimes someone would be building a treehouse for their kid and see just the perfect bit of leftover roofing material from a homeowner's roofing job, and bundle up the pile and toss it in their Bonneville.
The only difference I see here in my Villages neighborhood, is that it happens more often. I'm fine with it though. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and all that. I've salvaged quite a few items from neighbors who just couldn't be bothered bringing things to the thrift store or call someone to pick it up, or put it on sale somewhere. I mostly repurpose them - strip the wood, sand it, and paint or stain it, depending on what it is and what I want to use it for.

I would just advise that you shred any identifying information from the mail, bills, etc. They may be looking to compromise your identity. I have had mine stolen 3 times since I moved to The Villages. Now everything is shredded and my credit accounts are frozen so no one can open a new account.

First I'd like to say that toilets and bathroom sinks are one of the best things selling. There's a junkyard on Main Street going towards Leesburg that is famous for those items and windows. Secondly it is great if someone can take your you're trash and make a few dollars selling it. Third we are a society of excess. People throw out perfectly good TVs VCRs and computers because they are two years old. And yes you should shred everything because it's too darn easy cuz it is too darn easy 2 take a few pieces of paper and steal your identity these days

Its called dumpster diving and is very common. Some people find great things that others throw away and make big money on it. They also specificly look for small pieces of furniture to refinish and sell. Also, you have the cheapskates who salvage everything. Its no big deal and done all the time

Several years ago when I lived in Duval, I put my garbage out one evening and went for a walk. When I returned, my entire bag of garbage was gone. I later discovered a Golf Cart driving around, picking up people’s trash. The back of the Golf Cart was loaded with full bags of trash. I even got a picture! I guess he/she was looking for aluminum cans. After that, I never put my garbage out at night. Though legal to take people’s garbage, I did not like the idea of someone going through my trash. Lamps and large items, fine… but not bags of trash!

I'll tell you where some good picking is.. I live close to Ohio State University(or any major university should do). At the end of the school year, those kids just throw big screen TVs, computers, couches etc right in the trash instead of bothering to take it home or sell it. Mommy and Daddy will buy them new in the fall. Amazing.

When talking with my neighbor lady the other day, she told me she does this!! She watches some Youtube videos about couples driving the streets - looking in trash and then reselling it. My neighbor wants to do this and now has accumulated a large pile of trash in front of her house. Knowing her, she is all talk and now HER neighbors gets to look at all the trash.

My brother always said “we don’t care how you do it up north” — In our northern area we use trash bins that a truck comes around and picks up and dumps into the truck. That eliminates people going through trash bags or picking them up. I, personally, think that the bags sitting out looks rather sloppy compared to the bins neatly lined up along the road (stop laughing). I was quite surprised when I moved here and became aware of this method of collection. For a “city” that is so tidy about everything else this just doesn’t fit the picture.

This was a most depressing tread. It made me realize something. Now I understand why my wife keeps suggesting I sit at the end of the driveway on Mondays and Thursdays (trash pickup days). She says it’s a great time for bird watching? Worse yet, every now and then a pickup will drive by, look at me, and one of the occupants will say “no thanks”! I guess one mans garbage is another mans garbage as well. Depressing!

This happened to us a couple of years ago when recycle and garbage were separate. What I don’t understand is our bag is food garbage (we cook a lot) why would they go through that?

Last winter in the Villages I left out a vacuum I had come to hate, gone in an hour. A push lawn mower I never used. Gone. A beat up Weber grill, needed new parts for the second or third time. Gone. We have the cans up north, smelly, noisy and people walking by actually walk on my property to deposit their dog’s doo in them, sometimes in the wrong bin. I have to bleach the bin out turn it upside down to dry. The raccoons come for them, they have learned to turn the expensive raccoon proof handles the city insisted we all pay for. What a night mare!
I love our system here in TV. Not even one animal ever looked into my bags, food goes into garbage disposal. Garbage men drive by, pickup QUIET bags, throw in truck, gone in seconds. Come twice a week. Classy!

I'm with you. Had the cans--smelly, would get invaded by racoons, squirrels, and even a cat once, and they blew all over the street while people were at work. I always thought they were an eyesore. I really appreciate the bag system down here. We rarely see a bag invaded by wildlife in our area. Sometimes a bird will peck a hole and drag out a napkin.

Working items and things of some possible value can be given to Goodwill or other thrift stores. We like to support them because I buy things from them myself that I make use of. It is a "what goes around, comes around" situation. And the thrift stores have trucks that will pick up large items.

When we first got our house at Mallory we put out a few bigger things from past owner and called for large item pick up. A couple of guys with a wooden trailer came by and asked if it was ok for them to take it. I thought they were very considerate to ask first. So cancelled the large item pick up order.

My spouse wanted me to order a new washing machine so the day of delivery, I removed the old one (still working) and pushed it out into the drive for the delivery truck to remove when they brought the new one. There was a removal charge. I turned around and what seemed like five minutes later, I discovered that someone had taken the old washer when I was not looking. I contacted the folks where I purchased the new machine and told them to refund the pickup and removal charge, which they did.
I admit that I have stopped and picked up some shelving to be used in my garage that I noticed at the end of someone's drive the day before trash pickup. One person's trash is another person's treasure.

I always shredd my paperwork. I put anything someone might use or want out next to the bag, often it's gone very quickly. I have also picked up a light fixture that now hangs in my dining room, put out the old one, it now I'm sure hangs in someone else's dining room. The new areas are always the best, people put out perfectly good items in the trash as they buy brand new for their brand new home. One man's trash, another's treasure.

Agreed! My wife and I shred any documents and important papers with credit card last 4 numbers on them. Thieves can use algorithms that can take the last 4 numbers of your credit card or your SS number and match them with your name and address - then they can drain your credit card or bank accounts. And TV Landers would be more vulnerable because our generation was more trusting and less defensive - and has more money!

I agree with the original post because IF(?) they are picking up whole trash bags, they are going home to sort through it for valuable information and using an algorithm to get everything about a resident. They are not innocently looking for an item to resell. Pack and ship shreds about 6 months' worth of our sensitive documents for about $ 7. That is good insurance. Other items that should not be casually thrown away are prescription bottles - name, address, and other information needs to be permanently obscured in some way.

I’ve had it happen often. They are usually neat and polite. When I moved from my other home to this one i would sit at my desk in my office and watch them pick through. Just glad someone could use something I was discarding.

In the past I would assist my grandfather, a crusty old Irish man who was confronted with signs that said "Help wanted, Irish need not apply" "TOTB" was the fall back to feed his family. He was VERY handy and could fix or rebuild just about anything. "Top of the Barrel" one man's trash is another man's treasure.

yes, I realize there are no "hard gates" here as where I came from, which may account for some of this. just an observation, not a complaint
There are some people that THINK that they are safer living in this gated community.

Classy!
We used to put out the garbage bags the night BEFORE pickup - animals often shredded the bags and made a big mess. We now put the bags out in the morning OF the pickup.

Late bloomer, I can only guess that these young people are in dire need of cash so they’re picking through garbage looking for things to resell. This is just my guess. It’s based in part on the facts but our governor has refused to issue supplemental unemployment payments and is allowing evictions.

In my past experience in corrections my first thought was I hope people have schreaded their important documents. Just think if all the identifying information in the trash! Anyone wanting to do identify theft could have almost anything. But that is just the way my mind works

That must help your neighborhood's "ambiance." :D A neighbor had 2 (obviously) replaced toilets in the driveway for 2 days. Fortunately the Charmin Bears (of toilet "tissue" fame) weren't roaming the neighborhood. ;)

This is so helpful!!!! I hate putting aluminium in the garbage! Thanks for sharing
Aluminum is highly recyclable. Might be great if we could get together have people save soda cans. Take them to a scrap place and use the money for some charitable purpose.

You are not supposed to get political. In any case as far as evictions I do not own any rental property. Frankly I would never want to evict anyone. However it is a chain reaction. If, the rent is not paid, AND YOU CANNOT EVICT DELINQUENT TENANTS, the property owner cannot pay his/her bills either. Even if the tenants intended to pay the rent, as they fall farther and farther behind, the loss for the owner grows and what is owed becomes impossible to pay. Right now due to handouts there is actually plenty of unemployed and yet plenty of unfilled jobs. Young people. In high school, since I couldn't find a job, I started and ran a lawn mowing business. It was hard WORK, As far as trash picking. I taught myself to repair lawnmowers. Several of my mowers came from the trash.

Ex-northerner I used to pick up bags of leaves that people would rake together and put in bags. Great for composting. There was so much of it being tossed that I insisted on only taking leaves that people put into quality bags that they bought to throw away leaves.

We do that as well. We put it out, and 9 times out of 10, it is picked up before the trash guys come.
Definitely more prevalent where we lived in the country outside of Houston.

Just make sure you are cross-cutting all of your mail. Criminals will often times go through trash bags looking for personal information, credit card offers, SSN, etc.

yes, good point. if I have anything that actually works, I may just stick it out in front of the trash pile. if someone else can use it or sell it, good for them.
It was just so bizarre watching this happen this morning in front of my eyes. not something I had seen before. I just happened to be at my desk, looking out the window
I had an old chest freezer that worked but needed work to get it to 100%. Put it by the curb and a guy in a pickup asked me if he could have it. He wanted to fix it and clean it up for his daughter. No problem, I even helped him lift it into his truck.
It made him happy, me happy, and hopefully his daughter was happy.

Criminals will often times go through trash bags looking for personal information, credit card offers, SSN, etc. What you say is true (in theory) but I would be (and am) 100000x more concerned of my personal data on the internet then how some some papers in the garbage are shredded. If they wish to spend 2 hours reconstructing my junk mail, so be it. Virtually nothing is on paper anymore that I wouldn't be saving forever..
Everyone should check out this website: | Have I been pwnd (https://haveibeenpwned.com/)
Even some banks use it because I got a secure message from CITI saying they found my emails/passwords on that site.
And for those concerned about that site just Google: is "have I been pwnd" legit. It is.

Search instead for is have i been pwnd a legit site
Is “Have I Been Pwned?” legit? Yes, it is. ... HIBP has been assisting governments, such as the UK, Australia, and Romania (to name a few), in monitoring for breaches in government domains.May 19, 2021

Working items and things of some possible value can be given to Goodwill or other thrift stores. We like to support them because I buy things from them myself that I make use of. It is a "what goes around, comes around" situation. And the thrift stores have trucks that will pick up large items.
IMO There no good in goodwill. It business to make millions, good for the CEO. They arrest people in need.

really? Well the couple looked neither dirty nor hungry and drove up in a decent, white pickup truck, not a beater. they were maybe mid-30s and healthy looking.
I'm not sure "need" as much as "greed" is the driving factor here. and no, I'm not going to blame the State govt for not continuing additional unemployment for people when jobs are plentiful as a reason for driveway piracy, sorry. its people making money. while on the one hand I'm glad people can get use of some stuff instead of dropping it into a landfill, but on the other, it's kinda creepy to have these driveway pirates picking through my stuff on my property - which is according to the law, illegal. I just never witnessed it directly until Monday. I was quite stunning to observe

I do not understand why it’s such a surprise to some people here about trash pickers , everywhere I’ve lived in good times and bad they are around, for some it’s just to survive for others it’s a hobby . I see the same people for years going neatly through the trash in Boston mostly for bottles because people don’t want to take them back for the deposit they paid , please leave them be there not bothering you

Very simple: Because despite the various nice to very nice developments I've lived in during my career in 5 different States, I've never seen it until I moved here. Maybe it's because this is the first place I've ever lived in 35 years that didn't use bins (frankly my entire life, truth be told), making piracy a whole lot easier?
and as I said before, this couple looked neither hungry, poor or desperate. So let's put that aside. I haven't seen anyone who looks like they need to pick through my trash to find meal money.
and the last time I checked, what's on my driveway is still mine. Having people roll up and start picking through it is creepy. if I had something to truly give away, I would set it aside, mark it with a big "FREE" signed taped on it.

Many decades ago my husband had many bricks left over from building a garage behind his little house and put them in front with a sign, "Free Bricks." After a few days no one had picked them up so he put a sign out "Bricks, 5 cents each." The next day all were gone.

Another way I look at it -
New International Version Leviticus 23:22
“’When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the LORD your God.’”
I still don’t like people coming onto my property, but I’m working on it.

That happened to me about 5 years ago. You could tell it was bird or animal by the holes poked in them.
Every since I take my trash out the morning of pickup since I usually get up a little after 4AM anyway.

It may depend where you live. We have never had any animal or bird touch our bags and we put them out after dark so people walking by don’t have to see them. We are in an interior place and we use lavender scented bags. Insects hate lavender, and it masks food smells on napkins etc.

When I have something to get rid of like an old TV and you don't want to pay to get rid of it you just put it in the box for the new TV and place it on the porch like it was just delivered. It disappears like magic! :)
