We enjoy a lot of passionate discussions here, and I don't want to disappoint anyone with my question. Are there any clothing drives to help the Afghan refugees! It's my understanding that they are presenting being processed on some Military Bases....Thank you in advance for the helpful comments and direction.

A nice idea, I would expect there is no shortage of charities. Sadly like so many of these things there a legitimate ones and scammers. You can bet any will take checks and credit cards-legitimate or not.

However, clothes, it is unlikely that many of us know the code for Muslim dress or have them. Suede is pig skin.

Generally, charities serving refugees or disaster victims prefer monetary donations. Then they can purchase, locally and at a wholesale discount, exactly what is needed. It avoids the considerable expense of transporting, sorting, cleaning, and mending donated clothes.

Give your old clothes to local charities.

Our local Rotary Club was having a shoe-donation drive for a community in Africa. So, being a shoe-whore with tons of shoes, I decided to pull a few pairs from my abundant supply of shoes, put them in a box for my wife to inspect before dropping them off.

She approved most of them, but then pulled out a pair of hideously ugly shoes and said,'...do you want some poor soul to get beat up from wearing these ugly shoes?" I deferred to her judgement and tossed them.

Joking aside, our local club has a "Crutches for Africa" campaign that accepts old crutches, canes, wheel chairs and walkers that are donated to polio and crippled victims in Africa, it is a good thing.

Instead of being concerned about a clothing drive for Afghans, I think it is better to having a clothing drive and other actions for OUR homeless, especially for veterans who risked their lives for America. It’s not that I have no compassion for the Afghans, I believe we need to take care of Americans first.

Fortunately you are here in this great state and nation because others unselfishly gave to this great state and country first. Charity starts at home first to strengthen and fortify our neighbors and local neighborhoods.

Absolutely, the charities that are assisting in Afghanistan and Haiti need money to rescue, rebuild or assist in other ways.

True. But all homeless. Yes, vets risked their lives but you dont know the back story of others. They say, “many are one paycheck away from homeless”.

I don’t know about that but there are hundreds of children and their families living in the Ocala National Forest.
This fall there will be a pj drive for the children. Boxes will be at rec. centers. All sizes welcome. Don’t forget
large sizes for teens. I usually provide socks with the pj.

I donate every year with a cute pair of pajamas, socks and a book. Thanks for the reminder that older children of the forest also need donations.

BINGO, I agree because I believe we should help our poor American people first. But there’s a lot of very good Afghan people!

This is absolutely true!! I also build schools in rural Haiti. The women are always asking me for bras, long skirts, costume jewelry and anything brightly colored or bedazzled. In Haiti, they wear sandals and flip flops. The crazier, the more they love them.

Funny, I received a notification a couple of days ago from NextDoor where I used to live 3,000 miles away from Florida and it was a similar thread/inquiry - wanting to donate clothes for Afghan refugees.

OMG!!! Yes, this is true! But it's not just middle easterners, I think it's a Muslim thing because our former Pakistani neighbors, who we were very close to, would recoil in horror at the offer of any kind of used garment. These were items barely worn (one was a cold-weather jacket that was never worn but we couldn't return it because we had taken off the tags and no longer had the receipt). We were puzzled but figured it had something to do with their religion or culture and never pursued it further. But we never offered them anything like that again.

Just because something seems odd to YOU doesn't mean it's not true. We sometimes can't wrap our minds around another culture/religion's practices and customs because they clash so badly with ours. It's one of the inconvenient truths about "multiculturism".

I wanted to amend my post because there are similarities between cultures as far as refusing charity. While I believe the Muslim refusal of used clothing is somewhat unique to them, there are people of all cultures and religions that don't want to take charity, no matter how well-meaning or how much they need it.

This was often seen in America during the Great Depression before government programs and safety nets had kicked in and people had nowhere to turn except their family and neighbors. Some accepted the help graciously but other did not want "hand-outs" and refused any help. My father said my grandmother refused government "relief", which is what they called welfare back then, even though they desperately needed it.

Having said all of this, I think we see many nowadays who expect help and have no problem availing themselves of what's offered. I think that's a sad statement on the human condition because it make people less self-reliant and inhibits initiative and ambition. I wish I had a dollar for every Go Fund Me page/website I've stumbled across on the internet. And some are for the most inane, ridiculous reasons. As the Temptations song says, "Ain't too proud to beg". :ohdear:
