Hello everyone!

I would like to buy a cherry pie for a friend's birthday but I haven't been able to find a place that sells them. I would prefer to go to a bakery, not a store like Publix, and I want to get a cherry pie, specifically.

Can anyone recommend a good business that sells cherry pies around The Villages or Ocala?

Thank you :)

Not sure of any good bakeries for pies but cherry pies are really easy to make. :) Use the refrigerated pillsbury crust. NOT the frozen one. (Or make one but then it becomes more difficult)

Buy a package of Allready Pillsbury Pie crusts. Buy a can of cherry pie filling. I like the tart red cherries in tart cherry juice but you have to add sugar and flour and butter and I am trying to keep it simple. So get one ready to use.

Put the can of cherries in the bottom crust. ( I hope you have a pie pan...a big one, not one of those tinny things left over from frozen pumpkin pie...) Cover the filling with the top crust and poke at least 18 holes in the top to vent. (when you see a little juice bubbling out of the holes it is done)

Put it in a 350 oven for 45 minutes. It will be really yummy.

Here is a picture of some cherry pie filling. I think Duncan Hines Comstock may be the easiest.

I also make my cherry pies like Gracie but I use 2 jars of Cracker Barrell cherry pie filling. You do not need to add anything just pour into crust and put on a top crust. Easy Peasy.

If you're a member of Sam's Club, I'd give them a try. We purchased one of the best cherry pies from there that I've ever tasted. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

If you make it yourself, just use the pre-made refrigerated pie crust. Any filling you want and crimp the top crust to the bottom. Then put the pie in the freezer for an hour or so and preheat the oven. Brush egg wash and sprinkle a bit of sugar on top before you put it in the oven. Freezer cold to hot oven and your crust will be better than bakery! Sounds like a lot of work but it’s not really and your pie will look picture perfect.

I would suggest homemade pies from
Donna’s Dream Cakes on 301 south of 42. She bakes pies, cakes and breads to order. All homemade in her professional kitchen. We’ve tried a few things from her - all were delicious.

I second this. We bought a pumpkin and apple last Thanksgiving. Outstanding! Best apple pie ever, ever. Was baked in a glass pie pan that you get to keep. Very pricey.

If you make that pie, keep the crust cold until you bake it. A hot oven makes the crust flakey. 425 F for 15 minutes, then finish baking at 375F for 30 mins or until it starts browning a little. I cover the outside rim crust of the pie with a strip of foil to keep it from browning too fast. (Also I add real fruit to those canned pie fillings so it is a “fruit pie”.)

350 degrees F doesn’t work for me. We like flakey crust.

OP you wanted a pie for a friend’s birthday. For me I would never buy store bought crust, or canned fruit. Pie crust takes minutes to make, and if you batch freezes well. I keep bags of frozen fruit, from in season crops.

You are looking for a bakery pie, for a special occasion Miz Kathi’s is a worth every penny, if you can’t make a scratch pie

Does Yahala sell cherry pies? I've been there a few times and don't recall seeing cherry pie but I may be wrong about that.

As an aside..........Yahala does have the most delicious Almond Horns. Super yummy!

Cherry pie is hard to find for me. It is our daughter's favorite and I love the kind made from tart cherries and now that kind of canned cherry is no longer available around here. That is the reason I suggested the easy Pillsbury rolled up crust and the pie filling. ( I hate the cherry pie filling with the goopy red stuff, but now it is all you can find.)

I will have to look up Amond Horns. Is it something like creme horns? Kind of a sweet croissant with whipped cream (flavored with almond instead of vanilla?

Based on the Yahala recommendation, my wife and I went there today and it was a pleasure. They have many pastries that are reasonably priced and also have a deli that serves Bavarian style meals. Today, Saturday, they had a band playing in the rear (where there is ample outside seating). Really interesting place in the middle of nowhere.

There is also another business adjoining the property that sells moonshine and barbecue.

I live south of 44, so the drive wasn't that long.

We'll go back again.

Almond Horns are a dense cookie shaped in a horseshoe and made with almond paste. They are topped with slivered almonds and the ends are dipped in a decadent dark chocolate. I don't know how to post a photo on this site. I know you use Bing and I just checked and they have photos.

I used to purchase them in New York and New Jersey in bakeries. I'm so glad Publix does not make them as I would be divulging waaaay too much.

I always put a drop or two of Almond extract into my tart cherry mixture that goes into our cherry pie.

I say this in defense of Pillsbury Allready Pie Crust. I had eight maternal great aunts and they were a veritable skilled forum on homemade pie crust. They used lard, they used water very sparingly. It had to be COLD. The finest of all was my Great Aunt Thursa who at one time dated Eddie Rickenbacher...but that is another story. Aunt T could bake a pie that would make a sinner repent.

But I still stand with the very good Pillsbury Allready Crusts...the ones that are rolled up ...Not the flat ones in tin pans already crimped.

I just checked the Yahala website and "shop" options. Is that $3.50 for a single rugelach? Or is that for a box of 4? Or are these rugelach plate-sized that would get cut up into pieces and served to several people?

If they seriously are getting $3.50 per piece and it's a normal sized rugelach, I need to open a shop somewhere. I'll make my mom's recipe for rugelach, and my challah recipe, and hamentashen and I'll learn to make my mom's apple cake, and a nice streudel cinnamon raisin cake, and my banana bread - real home-made awesome food at reasonable prices - will make a nice fortune and have my house replaced by a new model in the same location.
