View Full Version : Trash in ponds

Rain washes trash off the roads into the soakaway pond next to us. Being mainly plastic, the trash doesn't rot away but just sits there, building up and looking ugly.

I contacted VCDD a month ago, asking who was responsible for clearing up this trash and why has our pond not been attended to for over a year, but have yet to receive a reply.

Any suggestions as to who EXACTLY I should address my question - preferably an individual with an e-mail address rather than a generic department?

Thank you

You know, I would not really expect anyone to be responsible to clean up the ponds. If you lived on a big piece of property and it had a pond near a roadway, who would be responsible for the errant plastic and unbiodegradable things that got in it?

Sometimes we choose a lot of things when we choose an empty lot next to us or a beach front lot.

Thank youThe Villages Property Management, 352-753-4022. That's who ended up getting the pond by our house cleaned up. Every time I've called, the phone has been answered by a real person.

I’m kind of weird, if it was behind my back yard I’d just pick it up. If I’m out and see large piece Of trash I pick it up. About month ago two small trash bags was laying off MB that blew out Of truck close to cart path. I swerved over and picked them up. Was on my way to store so I stop by mulberry to put them in trash can. Low and behold somebody said you can dump you’re trash in there. I said it’s not my trash I picked it up along MB. It’s mulberry’s trash now.

I did that when we moved in but the neighbor on the other side of the pond said I wasn't allowed in that area (it is fenced off). Plus it is very boggy and there are alligators nearby (and occasionally in it).

Someone at VCDD told me several years ago that it was the people who mow and strim inside the fence who should be removing the trash, but they are here and gone in five minutes so I doubt their schedule allows for anything "extra".

VCDD District Property Management (https://www.districtgov.org/departments/District-Property-Management/district-property-management.aspx) lists a number of people so I am whizzing off a few e-mails to likely suspects

As an aside, someone from VCDD was in our garden last summer looking at the preserve to judge how much cutting back they should do so I went out to ask him about the trash in the soakaway pond. He said there wasn't one there, so I took him round to show it to him and he was most surprised. Maybe that's the problem - the pond doesn't appear on the VCDD's maps!

It's amazing how many copies of the monthly newspapers (in their plastic covers) get washed in there. They are light and the people throwing them can't reach the driveways, so they end up in the street gutters and rain/irrigation run-off sends them our way.

Well that would be similar to calling up Starbucks to pick up one of their cups thrown beside the highway.

The Daily Sun choose to distribute papers this way. Unfortunately, customers distributing their cups paper bags are slobs

I’m still younger, but I probably wouldn’t in you’re predicament. IMO it probably in contract who ever mowing? Problem with most contracts IMO there not monitored properly? If that’s case?

We had some trash in our pond for a week and my wife finally went and picked it up. All good now.

These papers are NOT part of the Daily Sun. They're delivered by another group..
See them lying in the streets all the time especially from homes where no one is residing there at the time, ie: snowbirds...

We have trash I our pond too, the villages could care less about ponds. I have to call all the time to get the grass cut on the golf course (not where people play) I know there are snakes and other insects in the long grass. Living on a pond is not what you would expect

Good question. As it's private property if there is no response write the state road board and get them involved, you'll see how fast the cc'd gets of it's back if threatened by state .

It is an on-going problem. My husband has taken a rake and fished trash out of a nearby pond several times, and picks up trash on his daily walks. We have seen other residents doing the same. The landscapers mow right over trash and I have seen them throw mulch over plastic bottles, and assorted other trash. If it was only an occasional problem I'd say the residents can handle it, but it is a real mess in the newer areas with so much construction traffic. Not blaming anyone - the Villages needs to step in and clean up.

with our area it's the people that formed an hoa type thing, they leave it every other week. someone in an suv drives by & tosses them out the window into driveways. many residents ignore it & it blows away down the road

Yes, I remove the stuff I can reach with a rake under the fence, but the plastic is bobbing about in the middle of the pond so short of launching the kayak...

Have contacted three people at VCDD so will keep you posted

Some dog walkers from big cities throw the poop bags down the seeers not realizing they end up in our ponds with all retained water

I don't know about the ponds but over on my side of the Villages we have people who go up and down Paradise Ave picking up trash from the side of the road. They get paid to do it, they're part of a work crew.

If someone is mowing the lawn at the ponds, then they should be picking up trash at the edge of the ponds. That's part of landscape services. No they shouldn't be obligated to get trash IN the ponds - but if it's sitting there on the ground by the edge then yeah they have trash-sticker poles for that.

If they're not doing that, get in touch with your CDD.

What is a soakaway pond ??

A method for getting surface water off the roads quickly, from where it drains through the soil into the water table - or, in our case, the preserve behind us. The pond has a bar across it to stop trash from the roads washing into the preserve during especially heavy rain, but that does mean that the trash builds up over time unless it is manually removed.

Anyway, good news. I must have connected with the right person at VCDD as, despite my e-mails only going out yesterday (a Sunday), there was someone here today by 9am looking at the pond, and an e-mail from them by 09.30 telling me that they will be asking the landscape contractor to remove the trash.

The only reason why the villages is clean is because of what they, we spend cleaning up after the PIGS.

That is impressive. There are some interesting sales terms for stuff around here.
Water bugs, palmetto bugs, they are cockroaches. Ponds, most are drainage ditches..

I think a lot of the construction and mowing contractors are responsible for the trash being there to begin with. I've never seen a villager throw trash around like that.

People didn't pick up trash where you come from? You make it sound like the Villages has the monopoly on people who go out of their way to do things they don't have to do, simply because it is a good thing to do and doesn't cost them more than a moment's inconvenience.

I've lived in three states, two countries, and been to every contiguous state in the USA and I've observed people picking trash up in every single place. Stray papers, flying newspaper pages, random plastic bag, empty soda cans, empty water bottles, take-out containers.

No one is obligated to pick up someone else's trash unless it's part of their job. But there are decent people who will do that everywhere, even if it's not part of their job.
