If we have some bread that is getting stale, is their a place in The Villages to feed the ducks, squirrels, or wildlife? (rather than letting the food go to waste)

Don't feed bread....it just fills them up and has no nutritional value

If you want to feed the wild life...put a bird feeder with plenty of food for all kinds of birds (even a bird house or two)... esp during the winter months where they have a harder time finding food to keep themselves warm. Squirrels will enjoy too, sometimes I put peanuts down for them, that is in the shell. Keep in mind they WILL start to rely on YOU as a food source, but a bird feeder and bird bath is perfect. As for ducks, no bread, don't feed, there is plenty of food out there for them as other wild life. They should not get tooooo friendly with people, its not good for them.

Don't feed bread to birds or any other wildlife. All that does is fill their bellies, and ultimately starve them of nutrition. They suffer when you do that.

If you want to feed them, feed them species-specific food. Most birds eat worms, bugs, small fish, nuts, seeds, and will eat dried or fresh cut vegetables. NOT corn. Hawks generally eat small rodents, kittens, small dogs, turtle eggs, fish, and some lizards. Lizards eat insects and bugs.

If you have bread that's going stale, drizzle it with olive oil, sprinkle with garlic salt, a pinch of red pepper flakes, and cut it into croutons for your salad. Or add a splash of milk as the filler for meatballs or meatloaf.

We used to make small hard balls of bread, throw it in the lake and as we put it "sink the ducks" as they go diving for it. Probably not PC or 'Mother Nature friendly' but fun all the same.

Please don’t. The wildlife can become a nuisance and it is bad for their health. The few moments you get out of it, just isn’t worth the consequences.

Bread is the WORST thing you can give to ducks, birds, etc. Google it.

Feeding bread to squirrels has the lovely side effect of molding in the squirrels’ caches and destroying the good quality food they saved up for the winter. If you want to keep the squirrel population down by starving them, then feed them bread.

Really. Never feed any wildlife anything.

She asked what to do with stale bread. Not a menu of what the wildlife would “prefer”. Besides, you shouldnt be feeding ducks, squirrels or any wildlife. All that will happen, especially with the ducks, is they will constantly keep coming back and deficating all over your lawn.

Use stale bread by either throwing it into your food processor and turning it into breadcrumbs which can be seasoned and used to coat fried chicken or fish etc. or cut it up into cubes about 3/4 inch spead out on a baking tray and put a good glug of olive oil over them with some crushed garlic and toast them in the oven (watch them they will burn in a heartbeat) store in an airtight tin or plastic tub ...ideal for a topping on your soups !! Yumm ! Waste not want not !

2 things immediately come to mind. You can dry the bread out, make bread crumbs, freeze them and use as needed, plain or adding seasoning. Better yet, dry slightly, cut into cubes and make bread pudding.

Please don’t feed them bread, it is very unhealthy for them. It can make them sick or worse yet, kill them.
If your bread gets stale, throw it in the garbage.
Your idea is noble, but not healthy for our wildlife.

Please Don't feed. High-carb diets cause the birds to defecate more, and the ducks' stool can harbor bacteria that cause diseases like avian botulism, Norris explains. Uneaten bread is also a problem. Moldy bread can cause a deadly lung infection capable of wiping out an entire flock of ducks. It's best to let all of our wildlife live naturally.

Please, NEVER feed bread to the ducks. It is a popular pastime for some, but very bad for the ducks. Halve some grapes, feed seeds or rice. No bread.

Bread pudding is an easy and delicious way to use up your old bread.

With a bird feeder the dropped bread brings mice and rats and they bring the snakes. Is this want you want in your yard! The circle of life

The same can be said for welfare and stimulus checks.

Some imbecile tossed a plastic bag full of white bread slices near the pond across from the Summer Hill Pool last Sunday. They left the bag and bread scattered on the lawn. I guess they thought the ducks made sandwiches. Do not feed wildlife!

It is so much fun to feed them, but they do not need us to do that here. Nature is kind to them.

Sometimes I use too much bread to make bread pudding.

Torn up bread.
Butter
Sugar
Beaten egg
Vanilla
milk

Yum.

Last night had Scalloped tomatoes as a side; torn up bread, sugar, butter, can of undrained tomatoes, smooshed.

Yum

Our ducks and birdies find insects and little critters. They are so much fun to watch. Sometimes if we leave food out, it attracts Palm Rats.

Not dried rice. That will expand in their stomachs, making them think they're full, but depriving them of nutrition. And then they die of starvation with full bellies.

So how not to waste food? We freeze half the bread we get if there is too much, like shopping at Costco where you have to buy in bulk. Makes great toast later. Other food, if I find I’m throwing out moldy berries or over ripe bananas etc I don’t buy so much of it next time. So, no wastage. You buy only as much as you eat and freeze the rest for another meal.

Don't feed wildlife (also bread is not good for them). Bird feeders are OK, except they attrack mice and squirrels and the birds knock the feed on the ground and it begins to grow as weeds.

So if you want to take the occasional little visitors to the little pond near Glenview Country Club, it is a minor, not a major infraction to the Naturalists.

I read a long time ago that feeding bread to any bird is bad for them. They do love it, but humans should show some discipline and refrain from doing it. I believe that bread can get stuck in their unique digestive systems and mess them up. Other posters may know the reasons for NOT feeding them better than I do.

DO NOT FEED THE WILDLIFE. It will make them dependant on handouts and when there are none they starve, or they become a pest and are eliminated by animal control. It is also against the law in most places. There is no shortage of food here so please enjoy the wildlife and let them fend for themselves.

A better use for stale bread would be to make stuffing, croutons, soups, seasonings or bread pudding. If you don't cook but have friends who do, offer it to them; they'll likely appreciate it.

Way too much drama.

Just don’t let the ducks and other birds at Disney know this. They’ve thrived for years on popcorn, french bread, pretzels, hot dog rolls, hamburger buns and various handouts.

All things in moderation ;
Stop Feeding Ducks Bread – National Geographic Education Blog (https://blog.education.nationalgeographic.org/2017/03/27/stop-feeding-ducks-bread/)

From what I've seen here in TV, there is no such thing as moderation when it comes to feeding bread to waterfowl.

IMO Just like smoking or drinking. Little ok, chain smoking and liquor all day long and night not good. You can say the same thing with food intake, eat too much get too fat, which brings in side effects. IF little bread IMO was bad for birds they wouldn’t be any at SS pond. Or any around glenview pond or lopez driving pond.

I have cardinals that expect couple grapes every morning. I can’t say no to them.
