Have you been getting daily junk mail in your mail box lately?
It's getting so bad, it isn't worth the trip to walk down the driveway.

No I don't need earing aids
No I have enough credit cards
No I don't want/need a new car
No I don't want to sell my house

It's the fault of the Postal Service for making it too cheap to send mail. Do you ever get junk mail from FedEx or UPS?

Postal workers spend their entire career delivering tons of paper to people, 95 percent of which is worthless trash. And, they are paid more money than the people who pick up and dispose of the trash. What a system!

Package delivery, prescription delivery, bills, health insurance statements, postcards from friends, wedding invitations, magazines I subscribe to - and I use the postal service to pay bills, write to friends.

In all, a useful service and dirt-cheap. Have you priced out the cost to send a letter via the cheapest FedEx option? Or send a response to a wedding invitation? How much do you think your Good Housekeeping subscription would cost if they had to send each month's edition via UPS?

I don't mind the junk mail. Sometimes it's actually entertaining. Usually I just throw it in the trash.

Have you ever heard of the internet??

Pay your bills by snail mail or go hi-tech.

Magazines? Who can afford them anymore, then ask yourself why they took
them out of waiting rooms??

One last advice:
When you send $$$$ through the mail by check, your reasonable until the receiver
cashes your check.
Pay on line with your credit card and it's instant.
Any money not received on the other end you can call your credit card company
to figure it out.

Happy 2021

I've been going to the free chicken dinners. Once you go, without buying, they don't send you any more invitations.

For credit card offers I mail back the pre-approval to them in their own prepaid envelope and they spread the word

My approach has cut down my mail.

I've been considering going to one or two of these. Is the food any good?

Most of them are reverse mortgage scams and cremation services. I won't be needing a reverse mortgage - probably ever, and I'm Jewish - my people don't get cremated :)

So none of that stuff would apply to me. But hey - a couple hours listening to a salesman try and push something on me that I won't be getting, in exchange for a gourmet meal? I'm into that.

Not at all interested in reverse mortgages or getting burned up. We just go to the financial seminars when they are inviting us to a good restaurant.

Got to go to the Brazilian Steakhouse in Ocala, Arnold Palmer CC and several others. In a couple of weeks going to Marks Prime Steakhouse.

Some day might be interested in doing something with one of these firms. Who knows.

The headache you get with the sales pitch just doesn’t make the meal worth while. I went to a timeshare dinner once. At the time I was considering buying timeshare as a possibility, but the more they pushed … anyways, I won’t do that again.

Why push it off on snowbirds or snowflakes? We don’t want it!! We get away from it by having our mail forwarded back and forth from our northern address. Junk mail doesn’t follow us either way UNTIL our names and addresses are picked up here. Then - here it comes!

Sometimes I think retirees forget that they used to work for a living.
Did you never advertise with your business(or the owner of the business) when you were working?
These companies are just trying to make a living and keep the doors open.
Remember……..” One mans Junk is an Others man Treasure.”

Try to keep in mind this companies have employees and families to take care of and they are just trying to keep the doors open.

That junk mail provides jobs for mail carriers, advertisers, the producers of ink and paper, type setters, printers, salesmen, garbage men etc. and it does bring in some needed income to the business that are doing the advertising. Please don't let it upset you, just toss it out if you do not want it.

Just mark it not at this address or deceased and put it in the mail slot. Sometimes it takes a few times because so many companies buy lists. I did this for about a year. They will finally get it and waste their postage money on someone else. I get very little junk mail now. The only exception I can think of is when a name is on it but it also says or current resident, then you just have to recycle it.

It wouldn't work. I don't go there often, but you can't quit going because you may receive an "official" letter that you must respond to, such as a letter from the IRS, a jury summons, or a court order. I think people should be able to cancel their postal account, and all mail would be returned to the sender, notifying them that the recipient no longer has a Postal Service account. That would greatly reduce the junk mail problem.

I have the same thought about TAX FORMS.

The truth, THE REALITY, other than fine quality paper, most paper is made from wood pulp. It comes from trees that are actually farm raised. Same is true for most construction lumber.

I am a bit of a tree hugger BUT, the environmentalists, seem to be totally blind to the paper they use, the fuel they burn and the forest fires in Calif are a miracle. They do not produce CO2, or any smoke etc. Heck those trees do not as all other plants do, capture CO2 and release oxygen.

I think the major affect on the environment is the fuel and transportation of the junk mail to deliver it to people around the country, and then the fuel and transportation to pick it up and disposed of it. What a waste!

I receive only a trivial amount of junk mail anymore. Some of it is addressed to an aunt who passed away in 1994 as I was the executor of her estate. She contributed small amounts to many different charities so especially around the end of the year I receive mail addressed to her, yes also political tracts and requests for donations. It amazes me that they tracked my moves!

What I used to do for entertainment years ago was stuff postage paid envelopes from advertiser A with material from advertiser B and mail the envelopes. It became a hobby and the amount of junk mail I received dropped precipitously within a short period of time.

Years ago I read a newspaper article on a local who found a use for junk mail and encouraged advertisers to send it to him. I do not know how he did that. He compressed it somehow and burned it in a wood stove to heat his house in the winter. lol

But, like all government jobs all the money and benefits goes to management which adds nothing to value or daily service. In most cases they are they are the hindrance.

I don't mind the junk mail. Sometimes it's actually entertaining. Usually I just throw it in the trash.
You still send checks by mail? I bought 200 checks well over 10 years ago (still has previous banks before Wells Fargo name on them with same account number) and still have over 180 left. I get ZERO bills (except from Sumter Tax which are also online) in the mail. Virtually EVERYTHING is done online for MANY years. We go to mailbox maybe once every 10 or so days to clean it out unless I ordered from Amazon but even they use their own truck now. If we don't clean it out the postal folks get mad at us. :) I wish they knew already that I don't want to be cremated and that Leroy, who lived here before he died 4 years ago, is pushing up daisies somewhere!! :D

Bottom line though is that without junkmail we'd never get the 1 or 2 letters a year we get because USPS would be out of business.

Much of the junk mail is presorted, so it requires little effort for the USPS to deliver it to you, so it helps subsidize the “official” mail. Without it, it would cost a lot more to mail a letter. If you want most of the junk mail to stop, we all need to get together and stop responding to it. Quit attending the free dinners. Quit clipping coupons out of the flyers. Businesses would stop doing it because they would not get enough business to pay for the junk mail fees.

So, it’s really our fault.

Have you been getting daily junk mail in your mail box lately?
It's getting so bad, it isn't worth the trip to walk down the driveway.

No I don't need earing aids
No I have enough credit cards
No I don't want/need a new car
No I don't want to sell my house

Save this crap for the snow-birds

Most of my junk mail comes either from AAA trying to sell me insurance scams of various sorts or or AARP, which I believe sells the names and addresses of members to a variety of businesses. If you buy something online from a store, there’s a good chance you will start getting their catalogs in the mail, and some of those stores also sell you out to other stores that sell similar information. After a few years without your making a purchase, they will stop sending the catalogs. Make one buy and you are back on the list. Usually these catalogs have a number in them you can call to be removed from the list.

The U.S. Post Office has raised the price for shipping bulk mail a lot in the past twenty years. It forced a lot of printers and stores out of business. We’re it not for that, you would receive a lot more junk mail.

I agree that it is our fault that junk mail works. But, I don't agree that junk mail subsidies official mail. The cost to send junk mail is subsidized by the taxpayers. That is why all junk mail is sent using the USPS, and not by "for profit" companies, like UPS and FedEx. The junk mail cost is less then the actual cost to the USPS, so no one can compete with them.

My other point is that people should be allowed to cancel their USPS account entirely. So, if the IRS or a court sends you an "official" letter, the letter would be returned to them, stating that the person does not have a USPS account. Then, they would need to resend the letter using FedEx or UPS, which is how they should send official letters anyway, and not intermingled with junk mail. But, by the current law, if the IRS sends you a letter using the USPS, you are legally deemed to have received the letter. I know people who threw away their stimulus debt card because they thought it was junk mail.

We signed up for a free service with the post office that emails us a picture of the mail that will be delivered each day. If there is no good mail we don't make a trip to the mailbox.

Postal workers spend their entire career delivering tons of paper to people, 95 percent of which is worthless trash. And, they are paid more money than the people who pick up and dispose of the trash. What a system!

The " Junk Mail " actually pays for most of the employes salaries.
The P.O. is a non-profit unlike Fed Ex, UPS etc.

Fed Ex etc do not want the burden of having to deliver mail to every
address in America like the PO does. Though there are many problems
with the way it is run it is still an amazing feat what they accomplish every day. What's the big deal with throwing out a few pieces of mail ? For God's sake you are retired !

So if we are retired it’s ok for people to give us extra work? They decide how I should spend my time? I usually take anything with my name on it to shred, the rest never make it home. Once in a blue moon I get something I do read. Lately I’ve been getting these threatening letters about my car, how I must extend my warranty or else! They have all the info on my car… wonder how that happened?

You ever notice that about 10% of the time the email never comes? I do believe that after some number of days they stop putting new mail into the slot.

Surely you jest?

There was a thread on this some months ago and amazingly some people decided they were the mail police (or perhaps the trash police) and we should not throw our unwanted trash in the trash cans by the mail boxes. We are supposed to take it home and put it with our trash.

Hard to believe isnt it.

You know most of the junk mail has mailing address as RESIDENT. Sometimes I just put it in the outgoing mail & let the P.O. figure out what to do with it! May not be nice but it’s not nice for them to give you their advertisements either.

Question:
Who here sheds their junk mail and store receipts?
Your address is on all junk mail and who wants your name and address in the wrong hands.

I do, but only the part that has my name on it. Receipt don’t seem to have enough information on them.

As for the mail trash police they are welcome to take my trash. I have no time for such nonsense. Just because some promoter got a hold of my address doesn’t make it my problem.
