Best Internet Service For Consultant

I will be working out of my home doing design and drafting consulting work. Where do I find the best internet service for The Villages? If you have contact information that would be greatly appreciated also.

As far as I know your choices are Comcast hi-speed or CenturyLink DSL. I think that both have a business level connection but I do not really know what that means.

I use Comcast and have never had a problem.

You should read the rules about home businesses in TV. These rules make it very prohibitive to have a home based business.

I use Comcast via secure VPN to my company. No problems in 5 months. Very reliable. I have not had any outages and speed is good. For backup I have an iPod with 3G service from AT&T.

We had Century Link DSL when we moved in. Changed to Comcast - currently getting download speeds around 16Mbps uploads around 3Mbps - no comparison.

Comcast as much as I dislike there service is still the best broadband. They have a few different levels, get the fastest they have. I also use a Sprint air card as back up. Works well, but slower then Comcast. I also have the whole house wireless set up. Might as well sit on the lanai when we can. Will be looking at the various hot spots as well.

I feel like I am piling on, but I also use Comcast. I have had a couple of issues in 3 years (nothing major and always addressed quickly). I have not seen anything that beats the speed for cost.

I use the connection for Internet, VPN into corporate sites and remote desktop over VPN into those sites. The slow link in the connection is often the corporate Internet connection, not Comcast.

To date I have always used what Comcast calls the Performance tier of service. That may be the highest speed they offer in TV, I do not know for sure. I can often get the Performance package for $19.99/month for 6 months upon my return to TV (fingers crossed :)) That service is 15 Mb/s down and 3 Mb/s up.

I know in Norton, MA, Comcast offers higher speed options than the Performance tier, up to 50Mb/s down and 10 Mb/s up. If not there already, I am sure they will offer the same in TV someday.

I have not had the need to try those higher speed options yet.

Clear link is switching to fiber optic and then there will ne no comparison. At lest that is what they told me.

I just read the restrictions this morning, and it said if your business requires inventory, equipment, or customer traffic, it is prohibited. I guess, technically, a computer is equipment. Be interesting to see if that aspect ever gets enforced.

still don't understand, there are numerous home watch services that must have tools of some sort, to check everything, cleaning supplies, light bulbs, plastic wrap, if they send stuff to you then postal supplies, is that stuff equipment, could the rules mean small home businesses on EBay maybe??

a consultant for some businesses just uses a computer and a phone, sorry didn't meant to hijack thread

We had fiber optic service in Bradenton before we moved - unbeatable. But I don't see The Villages allowing all the streets to be dug up to lay the new cable.

You should have no problem operating your consulting business from your home as long as your clients do not traffic your home, and your business does not involve storing samples or carrying inventory.

I was told personally by the deed compliance office that if your home address is listed in conjunction with your business, you are in violation. You cannot receive business mail at your home address in The Villages.

I use Comcast for my computer programming work, which I do not advertise....I do not need to.

However, in the newer areas, such as Pennecamp, Buttonwood and such, CenturyLink service is full fiber and very fast and reliable. In my area in Pennecamp, Comcast and CenturyLink operate over the same fiber network maintained by CenturyLink.

So does that mean that we cannot receive any mail related to the business that we operated in another state, but closed before we came to retire in The Villages?

Must everyone who is newly retired but may still receive work/business-related mail pay to get a post office box in order to receive their mail?

We have had Comcast for almost 2 years and haven't had any problems.
