Passing on some useful (I think) information for Villagers.

A month or so ago I had to take one my cars in to the dealer to have the driver side window motor replaced. The car is not very old and I asked the technician how long do they generally last. His response surprised me. He said "Not very long in the Villages." I was quite shocked at that, and he went on to say "You guys do so much opening and closing this window that we do a lot of these replacements, we have to keep extra stock in the parts dept."

Well, that set me thinking and some while later a neighbor told me about a small company here in The V that had been installing "Villages Gate Passes" in the mirror of your car. This chip, which is programmed to match your white gate card, allows you to pull up to the gate, stop for 2 seconds and the gate goes up. It's simply brilliant!

Since this appeared too good to be true I called the company, 'Tri Line Services', and spoke to a gentleman named Ed who explained how it works, I asked a great many questions resulting in the information that you keep your white card, and yes The Villages knows about his service. His company is Licensed to do business in Florida and is also insured and has been installing chips since he developed the gadget 2 years ago. He said they have a 100% money back warranty for the product performance.

That seemed on the 'up and up' to me and so I made an appointment to have the gadget installed in one of my cars. A gentleman came, he was on time and courteous. He handed me the company business card and said he was here to install my gate pass. He installed the chip and had me go test it at the closest gate, it worked perfectly. It was just so slick to be able to drive up close to the reader and have the gate open like magic!

Of course when I came back I asked if he had time to do our other car, and do they work on golf carts? The answer to both Q's was "Yes, certainly Ma'am, I would be happy to." Now I have 3 vehicles equipped with 'magic chips' - that's what I call them - and am absolutely ecstatic, never wind down the window in the rain or let the a/c out in the heat, and my new window motor should last a lot longer. That's what you call a win win.

If you are interested call ED at Tri Line Services and he will tell you all about it.

Sounds like a great idea. It seems a little creepy to have somebody copy your chip but I don't guess there's any personally identifiable info on it. Still, howcome neither of these guys has a local number?

Amazon: rfid reader and writer kit with blank cards to duplicate $59

EdFNJ

Amazon: rfid reader and writer kit with blank cards to duplicate $59"Cards" won't do it as they don't fit inside your mirror and you have to get the right type. There are dozens of types (different voltages and different chips and different frequencies) and multiple chip/antenna configurations of each "card". Some cards the antennae are too small (lower "power") and some are too big and won't fit. Some coils have more winds and work somewhat better. Best are custom made cards but if you get lucky you might find one that would suffice. Most important part to increase sensitivity is the number of winds vs. diameter of the antenna which can be custom ordered from overseas. There are also various types of readers and they all don't do the proper type of "card.". The one that works here is very "old" and the lowest power of just about anything out there now. ;) If you want to get 300 they are available from custom houses like manufacturers on Alibaba.com

(Not the same "Ed" but working on the same thing)

This is a custom made coil for those interested (NOT a card). You can stick it on the back of a credit card or any used up card and have a spare key.

How much to install per car? When the "Ed" that was mentioned in the OP did mine I had to wait almost 3 months for an appointment. He originally quoted me $35 but when he did it the price became $42 (or $43, don't remember), not sure why but didn't argue. It worked just fine.

LOL, There is ANOTHER "Ed" that will soon have it as well once he gives a couple of freebies out for referrals. ;)

Save your money for the chip. The swipe card works through the window. Just hold it up on the window directly in front of the sensor. Presto! No up and down window. If you’re not directly aligned, just move the card around on the window a little. Been working like this for years.

Tri-Line Services installed one in each of our cars. Love them! The mirror in our Econoline Van is higher off the ground than most cars and there are a few gates below 466A with readers that are located a little lower to the ground that are finicky. We live above 466 and they work every time. Just like swiping the real cards the are some readers that are not as sensitive.

Our gate card works on some gates through the glass but not others. It seems to depend on the signal strength of the pad itself, not to mention that all the signal pads are at different heights.

Personally, i wonder why they even have the cards? All anyone has to do is press the red button. Or go through the visitor gate and wave to the guy ( if there is a guy there) it seems pointless to have a card at all. Maybe the gates should just raise as you drive in?

Having lived in actual gated communities with a bar code permanently on the rear, driver's side window (plus a 24 hour guard for visitors, who wrote down names from driver's license), that was our thought during our first rental. When we finally get there for good, we'll definitely be looking to have something like the OP (and others) have described installed, as needing to lower the window in a thunderstorm is no fun and kind of ridiculous.

I had a chip installed by Ed from Tri Line over a year ago. Great investment. Keep my old card in the door side pocket for the rare instance when the gate doesn’t respond (usually because I didn’t have the side view mirror close enough to the reader). You won’t be disappointed.
Someone also asked why he doesn’t have a local number. Ed, like most of us, moved here from another state and carried his number with him. He is local and lives in village of Largo.

We generally can go through the gates by flashing the card through our window without opening it. We have a phone holder on the dash where we keep the card. Rarely do we have to open our window to flash it anymore. Save your money!!

I am not sure they track who is going through the gates, but the cards are unique. If you lose a card, The Villages will look up the card number of the lost card and will deactivate it before selling you a replacement. And, each house is limited to 4 assigned cards.

Yes, you remove it. It is applied with an adhesive. But, when you remove it, it may not function anymore because you could damage the antenna part.

We simply put our gate card in a ziploc and inserted it behind the side view mirror glass. The ziploc prevents it from sliding around. We pull up close to the receiver and presto, the gate opens. No open windows for us!

Re: electric windows.
They are not the same in all cars. I have a chevy. A friend told me the electric windows are a problem in GM. Mine is ONLY 11 years old and works fine. I think the problem is holding the switch on after the window has reached the top or the bottom of it's travel.
The motor is stalled at that point and you can burn it out that way.

My card works thru my window....

I've heard that from others. Mine does not. Not sure if it is the glass in my car or the strength of our cards. Far from a techno nerd. Stuff like a memory card. I've asked many how it works. It has to be reversible as you can erase it and reprogram it. If, it was/is magnetic it would erase over time and be damaged by common magnetic metal searching devices. Best answer I ever got was voodoo. Truth is people who deal with this stuff do not know how it works either.

So what is the process to copy your personal data from your own gate pass to the new chip? Or is the chip a universal one that doesn't actually track your personal travel within the gates.

You may also simply want to try getting fairly close to the sensor and waving your card slowly back and forth flat tide toward the sensor, without putting the window down. Works about 90% for me.

Are our gate cards ‘unique’ or are they ‘generic’? Meaning…is my card different than my neighbor’s. I didn’t think gate cards could track the name of the individual going through the gates.
No, they are not generic. Each card is specifically assigned to the homeowner when they purchase, and The V can track them. When you move that card is deactivated, so don't let someone else have it

Save yourself some money people. We’ve been going thru the visitors side of the gate for years now never opening the window to use our card. The guy at the gate needs to earn his keep anyway!
Whatever works for you, but given that the larger number of gates don't have attendants, it doesn't work for me. It's so slick to just drive up and Open Sesame!

So what is the process to copy your personal data from your own gate pass to the new chip? Or is the chip a universal one that doesn't actually track your personal travel within the gates.
The chip information on your white card is copied to a new chip and you get your white card back

It didn't work for me through the tinted windows. I guess people have developed their own methods to get around the card-open-window issue. For me one of the great things is that I don't have to deal with the card at all, it stays snug in the console.

Except you have to mail "CloneyMyKey" your card for them to duplicate them. Just sending them the numbers (if you can read them) won't work. I tried that already with them a long time ago plus this thread is about NOT having a card in your hand to have to deal with. You can't bury those cards in your sideview mirror and if you open them up the antenna is too big to use the "insides." Been there, done that. :)

Interesting factoid though :) I have a couple unprogrammed cards and will try that trick. Not sure if those specific eBay cards will work (have you tried them) because there are multiple types of HID cards and most are not compatible (not readable) with this ancient system.

Antenna coil has extra winds which made them a bit more sensitive and less selective to where they were placed. Also VERY thin.

Even though I have not lived there for 6 years, I still have my CA number and I don’t plan on ever changing it.

I don't plan on changing mine, either. The easiest way to identify a scam call is it's from my old area code and its not already in my address book.

I like the idea of the custom thin sticker with extra winds for sensitivity.

The cost of doing this as a project is outside my comfort level. The cost of having someone put in a couple for me is a discretionary spend and something I'll consider down the road.

NOBODY has a local number these days. We all have the cell number we have been carrying for more years than we lived in the Villages! Tri Line Services is a bona fide business owned by a Villager. The business pays for the License, the FL business taxes, and for insurance to cover both the company and the customer and will show you their certificates if asked.
Hence the "under the table, no insurance, no license, no taxes, not recognized by the v " person who copied the original pops up and undercuts.

To clarify, Tri Line Services, LLC is a registered "limited liability company" in Florida, with an "L" document number. An LLC is not a Florida business license, and does not require any taxes other than paying a registration fee. When searched on the official Florida business license lookup website, that name does not indicate that they have a Florida business license. But, that is probably because making gate cards does not require a state license in Florida, like some trades. Obtaining an LLC designation is basically a name registration, not a business license. And, you don't need an LLC to operate a business. I don't think the other people mentioned as gate card makers on this thread are doing anything illegal or different from Tri Line. If Tri Line does have a Florida business license, can you please post the license number? I could not find one.

No idea about that guy specifically although he did do my first gate pass without any complaints but there are also millions of "REAL AMERICANS" (obviously that's what you are referring to) who try to make a few bucks "on the side" without having to go through hell setting up businesses with the state or feds to collect $50 or so to tighten someone's loose toilet seat especially since you likely can't find a "real" business who wouldn't make you wait for 3 months to show up and charge you $200 for the job. Everything isn't black and white (for most people anyway). One would guess that there are quite a few folks here in TV trying to make a few extra bucks using some of their "pre-retirement" knowledge. Somehow I doubt they are all setting up corporations. Frankly I'd be more concerned over the Jeff Bezos' of the world who pay zero tax then a guy selling gate cards for $40 whether he is "licensed by the state" or not. Are you part of the "2 ladies in a golf cart with a clipboard legitimate business checking division"?

Everything isn't black and white (for most people anyway). One would guess that there are quite a few folks here in TV trying to make a few extra bucks using some of their "pre-retirement" knowledge. Somehow I doubt they are all setting up corporations. Frankly I'd be more concerned over the Jeff Bezos' of the world who pay zero tax then a guy selling gate cards for $40 whether he is "licensed by the state" or not. Are you part of the "2 ladies in a golf cart with a clipboard legitimate business checking division"?
I agree. I cannot find any requirement for a state or county business license to sell gate cards to individuals in The Villages. The OP claims that Tri Line Services has a Florida business license, but searches of the business name and owner's name on the Florida license lookup website do not show any license. I would assume that all of the people referred to on this thread are operating legally, unless proven otherwise. I don't think it's fair to claim that any of the recommended businesses are not operating legally unless there is some proof.

Except Bezos paid $973 million in taxes on $4.22 billion in income last year... Yes he did. Was really thinking Amazon but since his $973 million was arguably .98% rate it was like paying nothing for him. Thanks for keeping me in line. :) Wait! Maybe I was thinking of 2007. Right! Bezos paid no federal income tax in 2007, ProPublica found, even though he added $3.8 billion to his fortune that year. Yep, that was it. 2007!!!!

Bezos, chief executive of Amazon and the owner of The Washington Post, paid $973 million in taxes on $4.22 billion in income, as his wealth soared by $99 billion, resulting in a 0.98% “true tax rate.”

Richest Americans—Including Bezos, Musk And Buffett—Paid Federal Income Taxes Equaling Just 3.4% Of $401 Billion In New Wealth, Bombshell Report Shows (https://www.forbes.com/sites/sarahhansen/2021/06/08/richest-americans-including-bezos-musk-and-buffett-paid-federal-income-taxes-equaling-just-34-of-401-billion-in-new-wealth-bombshell-report-shows/?sh=470c4ff7fe1b)

if gates were configured to operate like the exit gates the cards could be eliminated.

They do this on some gates during construction.

His "wealth" soared on paper... It's not realized until he sells the stock. THEN, he is taxed on that money...

My home up north is worth 7 figures... Doesn't help me but groceries until I sell it...

Enjoy!

I personally know Ed Ingalls from Tri Line and have one of these chips. Ed is an honorable person, intelligent, and a go-getter! He’s a resident of The Villages. My chip works beautifully and Ed stands behind their performance 100%. He is licensed and insured – are the other guys mentioned in this string? They are $39 ea, but if you have a group of 4 (I think) or more, they drop to $35. You will love it!

I don't think anyone needs a license to sell gate cards. But, I did a search on the Florida license lookup website, and I could not find a license for Tri Line or the owner. Do you have Tri Line's license number?

After reading this in the forum, I decided to try out my gate pass. I took some double sided adhesive tape and attached my Villages gate pass to the little triangular window in front of the driver side window of my vehicle. It works! I’ve had this installed around 3 weeks now and it has worked at every gate I’ve tried. No more fumbling for a card or rolling down your window. Just approach the gate box slowly and stop when the card is directly facing the box. The gate will open! No need to purchase anything (except some tape)

I also install these chips. They are installed on the inside of the mirror housing and are not visible.
