Actually dogs kill about 100 times as many people as alligators do. Alligator attacks are extremely rare. Hollywood loves to show those, but they almost never happen in reality.

I am a native Floridian and grew up in or near the Everglades with alligators around all the time. I have swam, fished and waded with them my entire life and have never witnessed an act of aggression by an alligator.

That said they can be dangerous. They can run over 35 mph, they can leap 5 feet in the air, and they can climb trees. All that said, they are cold blooded and more than anything they enjoy laying around in the sun. They will eat small animals, like small dogs, and if one goes after your dog it is a bad idea to come between alligator and its food. You probably won’t die, but you probably will regret living with the pain.

Yep, about 4 years ago while he was playing Turtle Mound.
They caught the gator and euthanized it.

I found several "incidents over the past 15 years where an alligator had to be removed and possibly killed.

The first one, 2006, was killed because it was getting too close to people instead of running away. Called, demonstrating a lack of fear. Normally alligators split and run if someone approaches. However, if one is fed by humans or golfers, it can become not afraid and associate food with humans. If that happens it is "normal" to kill the alligator.

Second, one in 2007, that also appeared to have been fed by locals, and there is no indication of if the alligator or if the golfer instigated the incident. The golfer went looking for a ball that went into or near a pond.

Has anyone forgotten 5 years ago when out at Disney an alligator killed a two year old boy playing a few feet in the water. It came up from nowhere and took that toddler in front of the parents. What a tragedy. These animals are to be feared. Not coddled.
