Fun question:

If you get COVID what are the chances that you will be hospitalized?

A. 85-100%
B. 70 - 84%
C. 55 - 69%
D. 40 - 54%
E. 25 - 40%
F. 10 - 25%
G. 3 - 9%
H. 0- 2.99%

It's H, less than 3%

But is 3% a small number that should make you feel safe?

A 3% difference in gas prices would make me drive to the next station. A 3% increase in taxes would make me quite unhappy. A 3% increase in social security payment is about double what it has been likely. A 3% chance of being in a car crash would keep me off a busy highway. A 3% chance that a bridge might fail would have me finding a different way around.

A 3% chance of winning the lottery is something I would run towards; a 3% chance of being hospitalized and possibly dying is something I would run away from.

A first time poster.

If you are new to The Villages and looking for a place to be vaccinated I noted a sign in the reception room at The Villages Health near Lake Sumter Landing that Covid Vaccinations were being given there.

A very high percentage of people who live in The Villages are vaccinated. I would guess that is true because of the very high risk of death from Covid to people over 65. Most people who have died from Covid are older.

If you have come to argue against vaccination, most of us who read this are opposed to that argument.

It is a very unpopular argument overall.

I find it sad and wrong that people are being forced to get vaccinated now. People should see that it is to their best interest if they are older. And it is to the general best interest of all mankind to be vaccinated.

Is the percentage taking into consideration the subject's physical condition? I have known over a dozen relatives that have had Covid and survived with NO hospital time, a couple even having Covid twice.
I think that the first worry would be, "what are the chances of you being around someone that is infected."

Here's a list of considerations:
1. Chances of you being near enough to someone infected.
2. Are you vaccinated?
3. Are you near enough to someone that is contagious for sufficient time to become infected?
4. Are you wearing any kind of protection?
5. Do you keep your hands away from your face?
6. If infected, do you have any symptoms?
7. If infected and have symptoms, are you ill enough to warrant a visit to the hospital?
8. If hospitalized, what is the survival rate?

I have never had the Flu. Does that mean that I am immune to the Flu or that I have just not been around anyone with the Flu. The answer is that I HAVE been around folks that had the flu and have not been infected. Or, perhaps I have been infected and not shown symptoms? I have also walked down many streets and never been struck by an auto. I have flown in many planes and never an accident. I driven at speeds in excess of a 100mph and never a speed related accident. I have been shot at and missed.
All that. Does it make me Lucky or Blessed?
I believe in doing what I believe allows me to live my life with the least amount of worry. I vaccinated mainly to protect my spouse from me, in case my luck or blessings expired. If I achieved the added protection, great. In my opinion, I am responsible for myself and my family, not the rest of the world. As long as I am not infected with a contagious illness, everyone else is not my responsibility. It is not my obligation to protect others from themselves or from someone else.
Just a suggestion; do what you feel is right for you regarding the virus, not what others demand you do. Mass hysteria is a mental issue, and has no physical substance. Don't let that hysteria/panic rule your life. If you do, then you can only blame yourself. No one else cares more about you than themselves.

One out of ten people over 75 die if they get Covid.

You assumption is not correct. It is wrong.

The vaccination does protect you. It is not perfect, nothing is perfect. The hospitals all over the country at experiencing massive admissions of people who die, and most (all most all) of them are unvaccinated. If your comment were accurate there should be similar number of both vaccinated and unvaccinated being admitted, and/or dying.

Imagine if everyone stopped trying to argue and spent all that passion on working together.

It's my understanding the vaccine is most effective against Covid-19, but will not protect you from getting the Delta Variant. It can only lesson the symptoms of the DV.
I know of two people locally that died from this crap within the past two weeks. I'm taking my chances with the vaccine and a KN95 mask. I don't care what "facts" people know. I do my own research and so far, so good.

I agree with you, except the vaccinations are effective at preventing Delta, just not as effective as they were against the original variant they were designed to fight.

Studies around the world show a lot of variation in effectiveness against Delta ranging from 60% to 90%. But, even 60% is better than nothing.

Why in the world would this matter to anyone? First post or ten thousandth post? Does amount of posts give one seniority on this forum in regards to importance of posting? Obviously it does matter to some when people post hit & run troll posts just to obviously create hundreds of posts that have been repeated over and over 100's of times in virtually identical topics. Nothing whatsoever to do with seniority because "senior" members do so as well. Just the common way things happen on internet forums. Sometimes it's just to generate forum traffic just for advertising purposes and sometimes just to create (another) stir on a topic one knows is highly divisive. Why does that suggestion bother you? ;) Having run BBS's and moderated and run forums since the days of dial-up modems (including one of the first the US in from 1981 to ~199? using Forum-80 and later TBBS software) that is my opinion. Sorry you disagree. Wish I had access to the IP logs as I am sure many surprises would be found.

Hell, regulars do the same damn thing... Absolutely, but that doesn't have any bearing on this topic and poster which is what the discussion is. Most notably s/he made a troll post, created LOTS of messages (and forum traffic) and has yet to make a reply despite logging on 1hr after s/he created this thread yesterday and then again today at 4:30AM and has yet to post a follow-up to this obvious troll post (which I'd bet will suddenly happen now).

Not saying people are being paid here but it would be naive to think these types of posts are truly some person who suddenly decides drop a bomb after 2-6 years of never posting. There are services that pay people to just do this on ad supported forums to generate traffic just as there are now hundreds of services to provide "likes" and "followers" on various social media and bribes to post fake reviews both good and bad on many web review sites. If you watch/look at this forum it has had dozens of other threads from other first time posters from people who have joined the forum coincidentally all in 2016 and 2017 and suddenly drop in with a first time hit and run bomb post never to be seen again or until the next run.

Believe what you wish but if it looks like a fish and smells like a fish it's generally fishy. As I said, I wish I had access to the IP logs and user logs.

I mean this seriously, since reading your posts informs me that you are significantly above average intelligence. I was amazed to see in the Orlando newspaper that Orange County (Orlando) approximately 80% of Firefighters were not vaccinated. That number “blew me away” and I had to ask myself why? In most cases it’s your choice and Firefighters are a homogenous group and I suspect that is the why. Still, the number (if accurate) is a surprise. I read recently that it is estimated that 25% don’t wear seatbelts on a regular basis. We humans are a strange bunch…. It shouldn’t be a surprise that some just won’t get a vaccine shot.

However, regardless of "intelligence" I have always been under the assumption that most of what is discussed on this outstanding social media platform is personal opinion, sprinkled with just a minute bit of facts to back up some of the posters. "Misinformation" or not, I find your comments interesting. I have to admit that I am a sucker for some folks' irony, wit and humor. One of the great things about following most of these posts is the ability to see both sides of opinions on subjects, and that almost everybody has something in which we can agree upon.
But, getting back to the original question, I still don't see why anyone would be concerned about someone's first post or how long they have been a member. If I don't wish to engage, I just don't. If I do not like the subject, I skip it. Is it because some folks can't resist the temptation? :)

I have no knowledge of these people and do not judge them one way or the other. But, your post appears to imply that because of their profession they should be given a pass on other behaviors. If they were all pedophiles in addition, would you feel the same, would you call them patriotic pedophiles? If they were closet terrorists?

My point is a person is the sum of all their behaviors, and should not be judged on anyone to the exclusion of the others but in conderation or it all.

I agree. What I meant was, it seems to be the theme of certain folks on here to accuse someone of being UN-patriotic and/or selfish if they do not get vaccinated. I have no idea why someone decides NOT to get vaccinated, but I do not accuse them of being selfish or UN-patriotic. I kind of assume that if one is a first responder then they have proven that they are patriotic and unselfish.

The hospitalization rate of flu ages 65 plus is H about 5% to 6%.

Just for a trip down memory lane, weren't these the same people who a year ago would accuse others of being "selfish" and "unpatriotic" if they didn't wear a mask???(like 24/7)???

Sumter county has the highest percentage of vaccinated people in Florida. There is no valid way to assess The Villages....other than "feel".

Most of us in Sumter County do not oppose vaccination. How is that?

Sumter County, FL COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker | theadvertiser.com (https://data.theadvertiser.com/covid-19-vaccine-tracker/florida/sumter-county/12119/)

I don't think those numbers are real....they have no idea how many doses where administered.......look at the chart they have.

In talking to groups of people in The Villages.......60% tops....if that.

The protected need to be protected from the unprotected by forcing the unprotected to use the protection that didn't protect the protected.

Actually, yes we do. Here is why. I have VERY personal knowledge of how this works, since I have a friend that just spent 2 weeks in The Villages Hospital because he would not get vaccinated. He may have damaged lungs permanently, he is currently on 4 liters per minute of oxygen and not getting better and he is 7 weeks from getting Covid-19. Kind of stinks since he is 59. This is one of the undiscussed issues - permanent things like reduced lung capacity and loss of taste that go along with this, not just dying.

So I went through this in August - he spent 4 days in the ER before getting a room, because there were no rooms. Per his doctor - "they are all filled with unvaccinated people". Even the antivaxxers get that it is the unvaxxed in the hospitals, even if they won't admit it.

So the hospitals are full, and here is where this effects us all. What if we have a heart attack? What if I break my leg? The hospitals are clogged with antivaxxers, so no rooms. On top of that, guess who is PAYING for these idiots - you got it - US.

Oh, and why are we forced to wear useless masks on airplanes? Yeah, its the moron antivaxxers..

Sorry, this DOES affect us all. It is the ativaxxers that are prolonging all of this, and it is really getting old. I am a conservative republican, and I am totally for mandates.

I have multiple 40 somethings I know that have died, who were perfectly healthy, along with the older ones I know. This is like Russian Roulette - most are fine, but you don't know who it will take.

It appears to me that a lot of people are just not good at understanding odds, and are really good at believing crazy people on the internet. So that is why we have to mandate this. Sorry, thats how I feel.

So the alternative is to stop treating unvaccinated people for Covid-19 in our hospitals, are you willing to do that?

Best solution - make anyone who is unvaccinated pay a $200 a month medicare surcharge. Delta and others are already implementing this sort of thing, since they will have to pay when people end up in the hospital because they excercised their "personal choice"...... Maybe these people should start thinking of others for once in their lives.

Still wondering why this bothers you. When I read posts like this, I wonder if the same folks that worry about others posting, also keep an eye out the window to watch their neighbors. I guess we all need a hobby....:coolsmiley:

I agree with you, there does seem to be a lot of people here that prefer name-calling to discussions. I was making a general comment not an accusation.

I am hoping to be scheduled in October for Cataract surgery at the VA. They said they could not guarantee a specific date this far out because they get allocated so many surgeries each day depending on the COVID load that day. So, they will call me when they can give me a tentative date.

Not that cataract surgery is an emergency, but the fact that the VA hospital in Gainesville is so impacted by the non-vaccinated it ripples down to all surgeries. It is even hard at the moment to get a call with my PCP she is so busy and said she is very wornout out at the moment.

I still don't see why anyone would be concerned about someone's first post or how long they have been a member. If I don't wish to engage, I just don't. If I do not like the subject, I skip it. Is it because some folks can't resist the temptation? :) LOL! Exactly, You don't see why. Turn around your comment back to yourself. Why do YOU CARE if someone voices a concern about something that doesn't concern YOU? Simply don't respond. Obviously it bothers you. If you don't see that it is not "just about the subject" then there is no possible further discussion which is probably the best idea.

Have it your way :bigbow: Whatever floats your boat.
Just out of curiosity, how many posts does it take to pass your approval for a first time, TWO YEAR member before they are considered "one of the gang?" Never mind, if you deem the person a "troll" it must be so...:bigbow:

Sure, with ZERO previous posts in the TWO YEARS of the trolls membership, at least 2 total posts including at least one reply by the troll in the thread the troll started because s/he had so much interest in the posted topic.. :1rotfl: Yea, that! Then s/he gets the badge of approval. Sound reasonable?

I guess there are busybodies concerned about what others are doing and if they are qualified to be posting, even on here. I guess if one does not have anything to contribute to the subject, one can always cut down on another poster. Good way to keep someone you don't agree with from posting in the future.

SERIOUSLY??!?!? You are telling me that if someone came and tried to sell you some form of protection (say lightening strike roofing material to ground your home in event of a strike) you would buy it with a 3% chance of it being worth the money and a 97% chance you overbought????? Sorry, but doubt if you are honest you would.

I "personally" know 5 people that have died from COID. I also personally know probably 200 folks that have suffered from it. All 5 of those that died had SERIOUS PREEXISTING HEALTH ISSUES. Sad, but true. Of those that I personally know if that have had it, maybe 10-15% had preexisting health issues, but it is hard to tell because that is those I KNOW have chosen to disclose vs being private about preexisting issues. Bottom line, YOU need to decide and do what is best for YOU...not your spouse, not your kids, not your neighbors, but YOU....because if you are WRONG in your choice, it will be YOU that pays the price.

Fun question:

If you get COVID what are the chances that you will be hospitalized?

A. 85-100%
B. 70 - 84%
C. 55 - 69%
D. 40 - 54%
E. 25 - 40%
F. 10 - 25%
G. 3 - 9%
H. 0- 2.99%

It's H, less than 3%

Let's think about this..PCR test was recalled by the FDA..Who knows..Oh I know, ABC NBC, CBS, CNN....

I would like to answer but I don’t understand your analogy at all.

I can say, honestly, that even though the chance of my house being hit by lightning is far less than 3% I am considering a protection system. That is just to protect possessions, I would/will/did take a vaccine to protect my life well before the risk rises to 3%.

Does not surprise me....The firefighters/paramedics are more up to speed on the negatives of the vaccine than most older doctors...such as those on this forum perhaps.:icon_wink:
