There ought to be a special ticket for people who park in the fire lane at the shopping centers and turn on their flashers. It's not that they are ignorant and didn't notice there were no marked parking spots or that they were in the way of traffic. No, these people are saying, "Yes, I know I'm not supposed to park here but I'm doing it anyway and I'm turning on my flashers to let you know that I'm one of the entitled!"

There ought to be a special ticket just for them.

I 100% agree, but I would go one step further(as law enforcement has more pressing issues than ticketing these folks)in that I would allow the average Joe to take a photo of the offender(or short vid)and be allowed to let the air our of all four tires. Yup...I'm that guy. :-)Yeah I know that would still have the car there, but since it's already there give them a task to do that is time consuming and costs $.

Slightly off topic but...

I now have a little more sympathy for those who create threads with misspellings in the title. I know how to spell the word "ticket," I typed it correctly twice in the post, but I still managed to mess it up in the title.

Well, I think legally even "waiting" in a fire lane is illegal, but I personally don't think that should be. If someone parks and turns off the car and leaves it there, it should be impounded.

But, many stores don't have loading zones, and I have no problem with someone pulling up in the fire lane and loading and leaving. It is illegal in Florida, but I don't see any danger. The POINT of the law is to make sure emergency vehicles can get there and save lives. If the driver is in the car, and a fire breaks out, they can drive out of the way.

Anyway, just my opinion, it IS illegal, and they should be ticketed. I see no point in a "special" ticket.

There is no shortage of people who think they are entitled. Bless me and to hell with other people. I do wonder if I've become less tolerant of them, there are more of them here or the numbers are growing everywhere. Based on my experience they are blind to the fact that they are the problem, everyone but them is wrong. Is it a symptom or the cause of the entitled syndrome?

We actually watched (and silently cheered) as a Lady Lake LEO issued a ticket for just that to a guy who parked his golf cart in front of Chicken Salad Chick a few months back and just left it. We were sitting outside having lunch at the time. I was really surprised to see that as was the golf cart owner as he came out from wherever he was as the ticket was being written. He obviously tried everything to get him to stop the ticket but they just don't do that. Maybe if he offered the LEO a scoop of Fancy Nancy with a side of potato soup it may have worked. :D Great chicken salad by the way if you haven't tried it. :)

Agreed!!I am a retired ER nurse and it infuriates me that people are so self-centered that they are willing to hamper a life saving access. If they are disabled and can’t walk that is what a handicap spot us for. There ought to be a special ticket for people who park in the fire lane at the shopping centers and turn on their flashers. I’ve seen the police in another city ticket them. It’s called unauthorized parking in a fire lane. Even with people sitting in their car. Big fine too.

It’s not just that it interferes with the fire lane, but that it blocks views of people coming and going and someone could get hurt. People also have to wait for oncoming traffic to clear before they can go around the idling car.

It’s just plain selfish and self centered and they are creating a hazard.

I witnessed a perfect reason to never park your car in the fire lane. This was at a mall and a small fire had broken out in the food court. The fire engine pulled up next to the illegally parked car and proceeded to drag their heavy fire hose across the cars hood.

The damage was extensive and I silently cheered for the firemen.

I have often wondered, and said to people, how would they feel if a small child ran in front of their illegally parked car and was killed because the on coming driver could not see them!

Brilliant, in case of fire a car with air in the tires can be easily moved, a car with 4 flats, not so easily moved.

I wonder what kind of information the LEO was entering on the "ticket" There is absolutely no way that he can issue a ticket for an unoccupied golf cart that would be accurate. There is no license plate, he does not know the owner nor the driver of the cart. He might stick a warning on the cart saying it is illegal to park in the fire lane. The owner should have stayed in the store until the LEO left if he wanted to avoid a ticket. But by coming out he gave the LEO an opportunity to demand papers.

I'm open to another explanation for why they believed it was appropriate to park in that location and while also feeling their flashers were necessary.

(before we go there, I saw three individuals do this yesterday and none used a cane, walker, or wheelchair. Not that that would be an excuse, but it isn't even a consideration)

It’s called being to LAZY to walk a few more steps. They should be towed even if they are standing right there watching them do it. Maybe they’ll learn to walk after they pay their $200. tow bill.

In my fire department we had warning notes made that looked like parking tickets. If we were in the rig and saw the fire lane flashing light deal they were handed a bright orange "ticket" that said "this is a warning your plate has been recorded and next time your fine will be $250 for a fire land violation."

It went on to explain that sitting in the car did not exempt ypu from a violation.

I kinda prefer the one with dill and cucumber. And there are SO many parking spaces in front of Chicken Salad Chick there's no reason why people can't just park. And if you're having someone else go in, drop them off, park where you can see them, and go back to pick them up when they come out of the store.

Anyone who parks in a no parking zone should be ticketed. Anyone who parks in a FIRE lane - that ticket should have a higher fine than just a generic no parking zone.

If there are signs that say "No Standing" - that means - even if you're IN the car, you can't be there. You can drop someone off, leave, and return to pick them up. That's it. That's all you're allowed to do in front of a "No Standing" sign.

It's horrible at Walmart, because the entire curb-side area is designated for golf cars to drive through in front of the store, but people park there to pick things up, get out of their cars, or use it as a loading zone - which it is not. If you're getting heavy furniture then park near the exit aisle in an actual parking space and have an employee bring the stuff to your car.

When my wife and I left Too Jays on Spanish Spring Square, I found a golf cart parked 6 inches off my front and rear bumper. The drivers were nowhere to be found. Had to wait nearly an hour for one of the drivers to return. The driver just got in his golf cart and told me as he drove away that I should not have parked in that area. The area had parking spaces along the curb marked for cars.

I park our car curbside and turn on the flashers in Mulberry Plaza just long enough to escort my wife, who has suffered from several serious falls, into the dentist or beauty salon and again to retrieve her afterwards. She can barely walk with a cane and needs me to hold her arm to move. There are rarely any handicapped parking slots available anywhere near her destination. We are not "privileged," but careful and we try not to hamper traffic. If we are fined, we will pay the fine.

I'm sure you're a lovely couple... It warms my heart...

Unfortunately, many don't understand the multitudes of reasons people have handicap placards, or need to park very close. If they don't see you limping, using a cane or in a wheelchair, they figure you're just being "entitled"...

Heart Disease, Emphysema (and other chronic lung diseases), Neurological disorders (which can result in falls), are only a few reasons some people may not be able to walk more than a dozen yards without assistance...

But sure, let them judge you without knowing a damn thing about you...

This wasn't about pulling up and parking and someone's handicap space this was standing in the far Lane where you're not supposed to be and taking up the roadway and only a two-way road. I see this a lot at the supermarkets where people pull up and just wait for someone for half an hour instead of parking it's almost impossible to maintain the traffic going both ways when you have a car sitting in the middle of a lane and you know they're not supposed to be there. By the way I had a handicap placard for about 10 years before I got my knees work done so I understand how they just simply is never enough any kind of parking for people with special plates. By the way you don't have to be The driver to be the handicapped person in the car

I hate when people part in the crosswalk while the passenger runs into a grocery store for one or two items. In the meantime, the rest of us have to go around their car to get in the door. Not to mention when coming out, the illegally parked car is blocking your view of oncoming traffic. But they are the entitled so the heck with the rest of us. The sheriffs office should have citizen volunteers to hand out tickets. That would solve the problem!

What a wonderful idea----kind of like hall monitors in grade school--we all know how that works out.

Let's see---parking monitor's friend-----do what you want
Parking monitor's enemy-----5 tickets
And then there's the inevitable confrontations with these "citizen's on patrol"

Why push it back! I'd leave it in the street. One good deed deserves another.

One time years ago, someone abandoned a car by parking it in front of our house and taking off. The police said they could not have it towed (unless I was willing to pay for it) unless it was parked in such a way as to be a hazard (wink, wink). The car became parked as a hazard very quickly (but not a dangerous hazard).

Someone who parks in a fire lane, or bus lane, with their flashers on is saying, I am not really parking here, I am just waiting for someone and I will be gone shortly. I am in my vehicle, and can promptly move is necessary.

Sometimes, a tad of common sense is needed.

That is what they are saying? Well in that case they are liars as well. I saw, with my own two eyes, that they got out of the driver's side of the vehicle, went into the store, and then got back into the driver's seat after exiting the store.

To my mind, if they were actually waiting in their vehicle (these people were not) then common sense would have them wait in a legitimate parking spot rather than standing in a fire lane and creating a traffic problem and danger to those who parked properly.

With 30 years of driving all types of fire apparatus, my pet peeve was when pulling up to the scene, the LEO car is right in front blocking our easy access. Another aggravation involved drivers not yielding to the truck as we pulled out of the station. I had to pull out slowly with lights, siren and air horn. Most would not yield unless I completely blocked the road. As far as firefighters dealing with a citizen's car parked in a fire zone, we would never "deal" with it other than with polite discretion.
