What is the purpose and/or significance of “thanks” on posts? Is it like “like” on FB?
I just happened to notice the other day that I had 79 thanks. Today it’s down to 76.
I have apparently been un-thanked. Oh, the humanity!

I believe it is to show appreciation for the post or posts that you make. Typically indicating "general agreement" with what you say. Or to let you know there are others reading that have the same opinion.

I'm not certain, but losing some "thanks" could mean that some posters removed their thanks, or that the thread was removed by the moderator.

Think about what we would do for a gold star in third grade. Oh If, anyone cares your permanent record never existed.

You guys make me laugh most of the time.
I’ve heard that proper netiquette says I should thank all the thankers, but I’ve never been proper.

There's an "unthank " button? Is it hidden?

If you have thanked someone, click on the "+".
You will see all the thankers & an unthank button.

It's not an unthank button. But, when you have added a thanks, there is an option to "remove your thanks".

We'll, you can blame me. I posted this idea here and it went live ten days later.
I like posting thoughtful, fact driven, posts. I was curious if anyone actually cared.

I’ve seen people on Facebook and similar sites giving Likes every couple seconds to posts by people they know—without even reading the post! I think perhaps that reminds Facebook that these are friends.
On Talk of the Villages, I only give a Thumbs Up/Like for posts that give me information I didn’t know, like some company that does something well. (I also take a screen shot, print it, and add it to my home repair file.) Or, that information may tell me how to fix something or do something. Sometimes the information may give me useful insight into something going on here or elsewhere, sometimes with a link to the source of the information. I like posts by experts, and I don’t Like opinions not based on sound information.
I also give a Thumbs Up for posts that are thoughtful, informed, well-written, and interesting. That’s what I try to write, and that’s what I like to read. I never give one because I agree with a comment or because someone made a sarcastic remark.
I spent my career getting paid for my writing, and now that I have retired, my pay is a Thumbs Up or two if I spend ten minutes or half an hour crafting one post here. So, I value them and like to think I have earned them.
