How did we miss it? We were at the LSL square from 4-5:30PM last night (and just about every night) and all there was was What's His NameThe DJ guy and nothing else. Unless it all appeared after 5:30....or I am losing it faster than I thought! Def no food trucks or tents and all the parking was available!

I might've gotten the Sumter dates wrong. I thought it was last night. Maybe it was last week? It's on the schedule, and it's some time in the recent past, in any case!

Didn't we used to celebrate Octoberfest here with the Frauleins in their dirndls and the boys in their lederhosen?
Is this the new ....umm...woke... version of things???
I swear they celebrated Italian Heritage night here not long ago. I demand ethnic fairness, plus us Germans are fun, all full of beer and dancing the Leichtensteiner Polka, mein schatz.
Ah yes, I remember it well;

I think "woke" just like "entitled" is being way overused around here. The more "generic" and "heritage inclusive" they make it the more people will come to enjoy it. I don't like Bratwurst, beer or watching old men prancing in lederhosen so I had no desire to attend but I do like many of the other good food selections from multiple heritages so I go for the variety. It is also easier and less costly and much less preparation for "the powers that be" to create 1 event rather than 3 (not even considering having to repeat it at multiple locations),

The more celebrations, the merrier! Why not celebrate each other. People come
from all over and live in the Villages. It’s beautiful to go celebrate and learn about a heritage that may not be yours. Usually these celebration are a one night event. If it’s something you don’t really care for no one is forcing you to go.

Yup.
I went - have zero interest in polka, but had a great talk with a lady representing one of the LatinX clubs in the Villages that meets at Hacienda once a month. I also ate a gyro from a truck that claimed to be middle-east but sold gyros for some reason, and not falafels. Which was weird, since the woman in the truck wore a hijab. I was really hoping for falafels. Didn't like the gyro much, the meat was way too salty. Decent tzaziki, it helped cut down on the saltiness of the meat. Nice folks though. Maybe next time they'll have falafels with tahini.
Probably a matter of marketing - around here, most people wouldn't know a quality middle-eastern dish if they fell face-first into it. We have an italian-greek restaurant, we have a greek-american restaurant, but no actual greek restaurant. And people love that stuff. And it's great for what it is. But I think they'd plotz if they ever had actual greek food at an actual greek restaurant.
Sort of like thinking that the Mexican joints around town are "fine Spanish cuisine."
Y'all gotta learn some culture. This festival was an attempt at that, but - meh. Way too stereotypical for me, not very authentic at all.

If it’s something you don’t really care for no one is forcing you to go.Yea, let's do 'em all! All 233*! HOW (or) Are we going to pay for 233* (one for each MAJOR nationality in the world) different festivals given at 2 or 3 places ? These festivals take months of planning for both The Villages AND the entertainment. If you can figure out a way to do that it would be great. I'd love to attend A Northern South West Side of Malaysia festival but how could we leave out the people from the Western Northern half of central South Malaysia? Sure, the more the merrier but which 200 out of the 233* will TV (and us) be willing to pay for in one way or another. Or do YOU have a few in mind that will satisfy you? Besides there would NEVER be a place to park at the squares! :1rotfl: Just consider it as a fair with many pseudo varieties of food and entertainment and not representing any one nationality. That way no one feels bad and parking will NEVER be a problem. ;)

I would probably NOT purchase from a couple with the woman wearing a Hijab. It seems anti-feminist to me. Where does that lead - back to the dark ages? I think that historically it was for a face covering to prevent the spread of some deadly Pandemic of some (?) old time disease like smallpox or the black death or something.
........Maybe with our current conditions, we will ALL be wearing Hijabs soon - I want mine to be tye-dye.

Would you buy from someone…..
- with a tattoo
- with multiple earrings
- male with really long hair
- female with a buzz cut
?
Sounds rather silly, doesn’t it.

Unless forced to wear one, who cares?
And no, it had nothing to do with stopping the spread of disease...

She has the right to wear one if she wants, this is a free country. Her adult daughter was not wearing one, that was also her choice.
What is anti-feminist, is intentionally depriving a woman of income based on their religion. When I lived in Connecticut I wore a hijab outside in the winter, because it was the BEST way to keep my ears, head, neck, and mouth warm on very cold days. I'd keep it on when I went in the supermarket to shop, since I knew I'd have to go right back out again and it was easier than unwrapping and rewrapping.
What is also anti-feminist is assuming that a woman showing off her hair is the only appropriate option, and anyone who chooses otherwise is anti-feminist.
In Judaism, a woman's hair is considered her glory and power - and if she's married, she's supposed to only allow her husband and young children to see it. Adult male offspring should not ever see it. They're not entitled to see it. Only her husband has that right.
In Islam, it is similar - though it's an interpretive issue, and depends on which sect of Islam is interpreting the laws . In some sects a simple head scarf will suffice, in others, the covering has to include everything except the eyes. In the USA, a woman has the right to accept her religion's dictates or reject them.
In the USA, married ultra conservative, orthodox, and Lubavitcher Jewish women keep their heads covered outside the home - usually wearing wigs. Unmarried adult women also cover their heads, usually with a scarf.
In the USA, many Roman Catholic nuns wear a wimple and veil. Is that anti-feminist? No - it's a religious choice.

Pretty broad brush you got goin' there... What you described is most certainly NOT the case in the three major "groups" of Judaism (Reform, Conservative and Orthodox). It is most certainly NOT the case in Israel...

Correct. But that is also the norm worldwide for those groups, not just in the US...
