For a little while, I thought I had somehow landed in the infamous 'Facebook Jail' for some reason this morning. Instead, apparently FB/Instagram/WhatsApp went down unexpectedly today. While the common sense part of me says it has nothing to do with the recent interview with a former Facebook executives accusation that regarding its policy, actions and logarithms, they prioritize profit over harm, the Gibb's part of me reminds me of his Rule 39 that says - "There is no such thing as a coincidence." LOL

I can't decide how I feel about the interview and the FB situation. Isn't the FB algorithm doing exactly what we want it to do and showing us the things we are interested in? Who gets to decide that this topic is dangerous to society and should be minimized or blocked?

FB uses "push" technology to put things in front of us. FB fills our pages with things it believes we are interested in. Google uses "pull" technology, it generates pages of results based on the interests we describe with our queries. If it is somehow wrong for FB to fill our pages with items that may be harmful to society, wouldn't it also be wrong for Google to return those same results?

Do we really want FB or Google to filter out items or results or articles that have the potential to be harmful to society if presented to the wrong individuals? If we do, who determines what is harmful and who should be allowed to see it?

I too, am a bit ambivalent about the whole issue (even though they are private businesses and the 1A doesn't apply). I can see both sides, but am a little concerned at the vast number of highly gullible people out there, that might take outrageous lies as the gospel and what might ensue because of them. I would guess that since the laws on the books are so woefully outdated, compared to where the technology currently sits, that the SCOTUS will be addressing a number of these types of issues in the coming years.

It is nice to not have to go Like all the silly Memes on my feed for a little while. A welcome break. I heard FB is not saying what happened, I expect they have been hacked. Couldn't happen to a more deserving company :)

Hacked? Doubtful...

More likely they shut it down because of the recent upcoming hearings... Doing a bit of "muscle flexing"...

Oh, and not to worry, I'll post plenty of pics, memes and gifs, just so you won't miss them! LOL!

The wife has a FB account but I don't. Have no use for FB, Twitter, or Tic Toc. I see no benefit in it, and I lose enough brain cells every day as it is to old age.

I use Facebook a great deal. It is nice to connect with people from my old street in Reno, Nevada; various college, graduate and law school alumni; co-workers from various places, etc. Often find it is a very small world and one with a very strange sense of humor. First person I connected with from the Reno, Nevada days had moved to Spain and I knew her from when I was 16 and 17 years old.

I want to see all research and input on everything so that I can sort the truth out for myself. The above writer is worried about people who are gullible being influenced by disinformation so wants some censorship. It's people like that that scare me to death: "Smart" people dictating the "truth" to "gullible" people. That's why it's so critical that everybody fight like crazy to keep free speech alive.

Another way of thinking about it is that Facebook is pushing things that they know we're interested in that will keep us on Facebook longer so they can sell more ads. But most of the things that people interact with are negatives in other words will you write about that cute puppy? Are you right words of indignation that the puppy was cooked in a Chinese restaurant?

By the way one of the nice things about Facebook is their groups. Leesburg has one with 20,000 members . I am sure there are golfing groups, and something for every hobby

First of all, "Free speech" doesn't apply to private businesses, such as here on TOTV. As the recent interview of whistleblower Frances Haugen shows, "hate" sells and a lot of people get a detectable (scientifically proved) serotonin rush by getting cranked up by hate. Trying to minimize the hate and division in this country, isn't a bad thing in my mind. I don't think it's OK, for someone to accuse someone else of heinous acts (like saying ("they're child molesters, but just haven't been caught yet") and then giving personal information whereby the extremist/fringe nutcases can be prodded into action. A quick search of 'Pizzagate' - is the perfect example.

Read the story of William Randolph Hearst then review Mark Zuckerber’s history including his Congressional “appearances”. Think about what FB/Instagram/Twitter/WhatsApp (all owned by FB) allow/don’t allow. Think about what they inject into your feed. Think about what the censor. Think about the 3 BILLION people that use these apps as their source of “information”.
You decide if history is repeating itself.
