Maybe because I eat two 6.5 oz bars instead of one 10 oz. bar?

The best value in my opinion is Publix Ice Cream still a half gallon, not 1.5 quarts.
I know I’m getting a little off topic but since the 90s we’ve loved Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. We stopped buying it when they introduced a new flavor recently and sales from the the flavor called “Change is Brewing” will help fund efforts to defund the police. I’ll die before I buy another Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. The link is below called “You are being redirected.”

I never look at the package except to find the weight/volume and calculate the unit price. I do not count on the store's unit pricing, since they follow the package units, and every package can have a different unit - weight/volume/bites/whatever.
It's been a pretty common practice for a LONG time now to put less product in a larger package, the best example is cereal.
So, we buy on what brands we like, then on price per unit that we calculate. Problem solved.

I can suffer the sizes getting smaller in the packages, my main issue is getting into some of the packaging.
My poor wife has poorly arthritic hands, and getting into some containers/tins/packets is a nightmare for her if I am not around.
As for some of the thicker plastic welded items, one slip and you could lose a finger.
I also wish that my body packaging was shrinking at the same rate as the goods inside.

Yes, pay attention to cost per ounce or pound rather than package. Math is a useful skill.
Plan your weekly meals by shopping the sales - BOGO, not the "2 for" price.
Remember that Publix and Winn-Dixie have rolling sales for many of their BOGO items "Buy One, Get One", and remember, if you purchase just one you still pay full price. Only the "2 for" sale items will get you the lower cost if you purchase only one.
Shop smarter, and use your math skills in these inflationary times.
Also important - register your profile, and remember to enter your phone number when checking out. Many times there are targeted savings as the stores monitor your past shopping. The apps also not only help you make your shopping list, but also remind you which aisle the items are located.

I fully understand the need to make a profit. I don't understand why, when given the choice to increase the price or reduce the size of the product they choose to make the product smaller.
My best example is Publix hoagy rolls. I always bought a half pound of sliced deli meat - enough to make to satisfying sandwiches. About a year ago, I reduced the meat purchase to 4/10ths of a pound because I could not get a 1/4 pound of meat on the smaller roll.
Last week, I bought more hoagy rolls and found that they were too small to fit enough meat for a satisfying sandwich. So, now they have removed me as a buyer of the bread.
Customers are always a lot smarter than the marketers think. We understand inflation and can deal with it. All pricing is temporary. If it too expensive, we will wait until it is on sale and then load up. Do I think that when inflation is ended that the marketers will increase the product size - fuhgeddaboudit!

We've been though this before. Prime illustration. I still have coffee cans that I keep stuff like unsorted screws in. Prices are marked with an adjustiable stamp machine. They were a full pound and cost ninety-nine cents. Today they are 10 or so ounces and like 3.50.

I recently bought Scott Paper Towels and was aghast to find the rolls were now single-ply--you could use them for kleenex, they are that thin and flimsy. The boxes of kleenex, BTW, now for the same price you get 65 sheets instead of the 84 they used to hold.

It is far more complex than that. As I posted elsewhere coffee used to be sold by the pound. It is now 10-13 ounces. If, you were still selling a pound it would of course be more expensive. Few people bother to figure out the cost per ounce and would buy the lower priced but actually more expensive 10-13 ounce size. What to charge is carefully watched by suppliers. A size reduction, a price increase, is often tried by section, by territory.
Wait until it is on sale. The way that works, somethings only sell when they are on sale.
If, the normal price, on which they sell far less is not high enough you cannot run a sale
because it would mean you are losing money on every item sold-a quick way to go bankrupt. When, an item is,"On Sale," the manufacturer can anticipate having more in inventory and the retail store knows to buy more. It is all charted. On the last,"Sale," we sold 50% more our sales are up down from that date so we need to order this much more or less.

Capitalism at it finest.
That is another whole issue. There is no shortage of bias. First of all pure capitalism, pure communism exists NOWHERE except in books. History shows clearly that under capitalism, people interested in prosperity for themselves and their family produce far more goods, true wealth for all including their comrades. Then, does the reality of communism. Make the rulers wealthy. The others, the proletariat well they should work hard to produce for others-their comrads. It is a NICE concept. Except that is does not WORK. Hum, an interesting play on words.
Have we all forgotten the first oil embargo? Government price controls made for less supply. Long lines and a black market. A very small example of how government control, socialism/COMMUNISM works in the real world.

I don't know. Big tart is honing in too.
I remember when you could get a pop tart that was nearly covered edge to edge with icing and filled to match.
Now? These things are about a 1 inch strip down the middle. Not only that, the damn things must be 20% smaller than they were, as you could fit 4 more tarts per box. One pair on the side, one pair on the end.
It's utter madness! How am I going to get my fill of a toaster pastry when they shrink them away to just some faux lembas with a bit of filling sprayed in there!

Packaging was changed several years ago to keep the “crazies” from putting harmful items in a package. It is difficult for some to open a package, but it’s just another sign of the times we now live in. It use to be fun to fly too. Putting fewer bran flakes into a Kellogg box is a marketing tool that works and if it quit working Kellogg would do something different. That’s why they pay their marketing people big bucks.

Yes, lots of things are shrinking??????? as I age. I have gone from almost 6 ft 1 down to about 5ft 10 in about the last 20 years. My hat size has gone down (maybe because of hair loss?). My wallet and bank accounts are dropping. I am listening to less Rock and Roll (and more classical). My weight IS actually decreasing as my muscle density flies strangely away. My serve speed is decreasing. And yes, economically speaking - the purveyors of retail goods have found packaging methods designed to make quantity look bigger, while actually decreasing quantity. And the quality of many products is decreasing and being made of cheaper, and inferior materials. And the middle class is decreasing to the point of non-existence.

Has anyone else noticed that not only does just about everything cost quite a bit more at the grocery store, but the package size of most things are also getting smaller.
I had to check and see if this was just a really old thread that someone had bumped with a new response.
Shrinkage in lieu of increased prices has been going on - sheesh - decades. You might not remember when you could get a "biggie fry" from Wendy's for the same price as the current large. And if you check out the pre-packaged cheese department you might take a peek at the actual weight - many of them are now 6 ounces, instead of 8 ounces. Same price, smaller package. That happened around 12 years ago.
Most of the Drakes' snack foods have been reduced in size. Starkist reduced their 6-ounce can to a 5-ounce can in 2008. The 5-ounce can is of course more expensive now, because of inflation, but it's also proportionately more expensive because of this reduction in size.
Have you bought a Fishwich at McDonald's lately? It's not even 2 ounces of fish anymore, it used to be almost 3 ounces. They claim they use a 1/2 slice of cheese. But their whole slice size has also been reduced, resulting in around 1/3 of the size of the original full slice.
They're $4.59 per sandwich too. Consider the fish is the "main ingredient" and take $1.59 per sandwich off to account for the tartar sauce, cheese, and hyper-aerated bun. That leaves us with $3.00 per piece of fish, at less than 2 ounces per piece. Round it up to a full 2 ounces, and that means $1.50 per ounce. There's 16 ounces in a pound. So your fillet of fish is costing you $24 per pound of pollock. You can get 1.25 pounds of frozen breaded pollock at Walmart for $5.
We pay whatever we're willing to pay, for whatever we want. The corporations know this. They will charge the highest they can that the market will bear. That's capitalism. And if the market is starting to waver, they'll reduce the size, to prevent raising the price. But the price is not the same thing as the cost. It costs us more. But we pay the same price we paid yesterday, for less of the same thing today.

If you have a pair in your garage there is no need to buy a "special plastic cutting shear". Amazon has a set of 3 different pairs of shears PLUS a free set of garden gloves for $15 and you can trim your plants and open plastic sealed stuff and keep your hands clean as a bonus! :D

I’ll die before I buy another Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. The link is below called “You are being redirected.”

Used to enjoy the ice cream, but as long as they (anyone) uses a product for political purposes we will NOT support that business. Entertainers should entertain and businesses should compete and profit. Just old fashioned I suppose. We now use mostly "private branded" items sold under a store label.
