I'd bet it's still lower than where you came from.

When I first here in 2009, there was almost none. You could leave your key in the golf cart, leave your golf clubs on the cart and go in and enjoy a lunch or beer at your favorite restaurant, and you did not fave to worry if you left your home and forget to lock the door. My how everything has changed in 12 years.

The country has changed from Blue Lives Matter to Black Lives Matter. So sad.
I do not think race had any relevance to this sad event at Brownwood. Mental health sure did. And the police handled this extremely well. Hats off for their excellent work.

Or could it be that there is just more reporting on it. The online news seems to only report on the negative. There probably was no online blog about crime 12 years ago.
It's the same reason that the country is so divided. We now have a 24 hour news cycle and it's mostly negative. More of us are online looking at blogs and websites that look to divide us.
I'm guessing that not much has changed nationally or here in The Villages. We weren't seeing the bad so we thought everything was perfect. And as has been pointed out it much better than it was where from many of us came.

Don’t know why everyone that moves or visits TV thinks it’s any different than any other city in America! It’s not just because we think we’re all old.

If anyone is interested in what happened in the lofts a Brownwood on Tuesday, there was a man with a gun holding a woman hostage. The police responded with a hostage unit and it took about two or three hours to talk him out of whatever his issues were and it was resolved peacefully. They took a lot of the residents were in the building and put them in the Trillium Recreation Center

He claimed to be armed. It was a false statement.
But SWAT handled it very well.
Below quote if from the other Villages' online news source--
The incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Wildwood Police Department. A 65-year-old man was taken into custody around 4 p.m. He had claimed to be armed, but did not have any firearms when he eventually surrendered to police.

I disagree, as many of my friends and I always came into Spanish Springs, and Sumter Landing after golf, had lunch a few beers, left are clubs on the cart and not one of us ever had a problem. Today, we all have locks for our clubs and always take our keys with us. Explosive growth has lead to the increase in crime which’ seems to happen everywhere this is the case.

We do about the same, but leave our clubs without locks on the cart and take our key. Nobody has taken our clubs and we been here just north of fifteen years. Used golf clubs - who wants them? Besides maybe new clubs would improve my golf game. Nah, their only five years old and Callaway.

I beg to disagree. From my perspective The Villages is a LOT different.
I hail from Minnesota (a good state to be "from", especially now). See below:
"Minnesota recorded 185 murders in 2020, up 58 percent from 117 in 2019. That broke the record of 183 set in 1995 when Minneapolis alone had a record 97 homicides. The report said 75 percent of the state's murders last year were committed with guns, up from 69 percent in 2019. The homicide “clearance rate” was 65 percent of cases resulting in arrests, in line with 64 percent in 2019 but below the closure rates for 2016-18.
Other significant trends included a nearly 54 percent increase in arson to 710 fires after several years of declines. Motor vehicle thefts rose nearly 20 percent to 13,662, the most since 2005, amid a surge in carjackings. Bias crimes hit the highest number in 15 years, with 223 incidents reported, and 41 percent were motivated by bias against Black people. The value of property stolen jumped nearly 55 percent to $216 million, with big increases in thefts of food, grooming products, cash and vehicles." (MPR)
The space cadets are firmly in charge in both Minneapolis and St. Paul, as is shown by the fact that, even as crime is spiking precipitously, the movement in Minneapolis and St. Paul is to actually LESSEN police presence. Minneapolis has an item on the ballot that will be voted on in less than a month, to actually DEFUND the police and replace them with some kind of nebulously-defined "ambassadors" and social workers. Up there, cops are the enemy.
Down here? Here, I see that law enforcement is embraced and valued.
BIG difference.

Just remember everyone, The Villages current population is over 140,000 people.
By the time the villages are done building there will easily be over 200,000 people in a supposed retirement community. Remember we are not a gated community but a community with gates. Anyone from outside the villages pretty much has full access to any neighborhood or any street or any business or town Square. Anytime you pack 200,000+ people in any community and at the same time many of the retirees grandchildren and children are living within our community you are bound to see a significant increase in crime and Traffic. Our gate attendants do not stop anyone from entering our Villages. Heck only about 20% of the villages have gate attendants. Go to a Dell Webb, On Top Of The World, Margaritaville, or Stone Crest and try getting in without authorization, you won’t. You will be stopped and told to leave.
