The question is.....if you scratch out 3 letters and then write the name of the recipient of the check on your personal check.....is that check still valid?
Went into Chase Bank where we were told that the check was void since we scratched out on it.....it was in the name of the account holder and wanting to cash her own check. The teller went to the manager and was told that the check was void....Thoughts? We are now saying good bye to Chase Bank. Your thoughts?

Typically, if you scratch out something on any legal document, the signer should initial or sign again in the scratched out area. I don't know if that would have made any difference. It is a judgment call by the bank.

Not sure if this helps but: From here: How to Change the Payee on a Check | Sapling (https://www.sapling.com/8194408/change-payee-check)
Errors on a check could include a misspelling of your name or the check being written to a different name. It is illegal to correct any error on a check on your own. Fortunately, there are other methods of correcting the error so you can still cash or deposit the instrument.

Their bank their rules. I don't see where "untrained" applies here in any way.

I think the untrained is referring to the OP who lacked training on how to correct the error.

With some of the fraud that has been going around, I applaud the bank teller for their actions, as well as when they caution or stop large cash withdrawals under some questionable circumstances. I think I would have asked how to properly cash the check. IMHO, no altered check should ever be cashed.

The bank has the discretion to except a check or refuse it . When I worked as a teller and knew the customer I would allow them to make any changes to their check and initial those changes. As long as there is money in the account it would go through.

The author is over reacting to a procedure the bank has to keep the author's funds safe. I'm use CHASE and I'm happy they are picky about withdrawals.

Alterations make a legal document (bank check) ambiguous and the bank is likely responsible for any future dispute about the altered document. Lower level bank employees such as tellers generally don’t have their employer’s authority to make judgements about the degree of bank risk even if small.
I believe this is a reasonable bank practice when dealing with tellers. A higher level bank employee might have a different outcome because they usually have more authority to make judgments.

Maybe slightly off topic, but, if you have old plain paper checks, I would suggest that you order new checks. I recently replaced my checks, and the new ones have 7 additional anti-fraud security features. They are probably as difficult to counterfeit as currency.

Would you accept a check from someone with scratched letters on it ??
But you want the bank to accept this .

I was a teller for many years & I was told that a check like that would have been null & void.

Dump Chase - a lousy bank to do business with. I closed all my accounts w Chase. If it was your own check, cashing it w Chase should be no problem. If it were another banks check at Chase maybe - but u indicated u had an account there - so they should have been accomodating - but that's now a Chase way of doing business. Just ask Jimmy Diamond.

My guess is that in today's interactions with the public, bank tellers are third -- only to servers and retail -- when it comes to having to endure self-righteous indignation from customers.
When a place that is holding money for me uses security precautions on ME, ME, ME, I always say, "Thank you."
Geez. Get over yourself.
The teller was doing her job.

I don't like Chase because I've always had a pro business anti-consumer attitude at their branches. They only take your money and give you little interest because they have to by the FdC regulations to have branches that serve the community.
That being said if Chase is your bank and that was a check made out to your account that they did not accept, you can always ask for what's called a "counter check" which is a blank unprinted check and you have to fill out your name and bank account code which is right on the existing check of course, or just ask the teller nicely. I know you wanted to save if you sense the check cost you to get printed, and you should have also been able to just simply withdraw the money, and then tear up the check. Just remember everyone is under a lot of stress and you have to learn to relax a little extra yourself

I interpreted the OP as trying to cash a check written by a friend or relative who was not present. The OP had an account there, but they were not trying to cash their own check. Obviously, they could have withdrawn money from their own account.

Why cash a check to withdraw money from your own account? Just present your ATM card to the teller and request cash , or like what has already been suggested, just tear up the old check and write a new one.

Why would you no longer want to do business with a bank that has protocols in place to protect you from fraud? No, you can’t alter a check and then ask for it to be cashed!

If the account owner, (maker of the check) is present in the Branch, there should be not reason to void the check. Ultimately, if the Manager says, no go.. then you are out of luck

See Post No. 25. The OP didn't say that the check was written for their account. The OP only said that they have an account at Chase, not that the scratched out check was for the OP's account. It was probably a check they were trying to cash that was written by a friend or relative on another account. Since the payer on the check wasn't present, the bank would not cash the check. At least that is the way I interpreted the thread.

I was told years ago by a bank, that if a check is made out to you with your name misspelled, you should sign it as your name is written on the check, then sign your correct signature below it and present your ID with the check. I have used this method several times and never had a problem cashing the check, especially at my own bank.

That would not have happened at Wells Fargo Bank as you would still be waiting in line to cash it. That is one worthless bank.

If you make a mistake on a check you put one line through it and initial it. If it is you taking money out of your own account you ask for a counter withdrawal and don’t need a check or use your atm. If the check is from someone else then you are out of luck making changes.

By the way when I first went to college and got my own account for checking, the very first check I forgot to sign on the front and I cashed it anyway without even looking.!!! So we don't have rocket scientists working at Banks

One thing that is not clear about this thread is that the OP didn't say who scratched out 3 letters on the check. If it was someone other than the account owner, it would clearly be a forged and defective check, and should not be cashed.

You cannot scratch something out on a legal document. A check is a legal document. What if someone stole your check, scratched your name out and put theirs in it's place. Do you want them to be able to cash it? Of course not. That is what happened here. You cannot change the name on the check. It is no longer legal or cashable. The teller did the right thing,

Forgive me but is sounds fishy to me. "Wanted to cash her own check." If, "she was there, she could simply tear up that check and write another one. It is not Chase, an altered check is void. "Cash a check," if the check was deposited into the account, they would hold the funds until the check cleared.

The account holder was not there to initial it. Someone else had brought the check to the bank to cash it for them.
