Doc's Restoration??

just wondering is it me or does this seem strange??

we're getting quotes for new kitchen and bath countertops also new flooring... we had already received 2 estimates using the same products and Doc's was the 3rd... when we got Doc's estimate there was no mention of square footage needed for the flooring or countertops...

I called and asked about it and was told they do not put that info. in the proposal because then customers would compare the bids ...

I always thought that was the purpose of shopping around and getting estimates... and when doing so I'm very careful that I tell them all the same brand of materials that I want installed

I would NEVER do business with a contractor that wouldn't tell me how much material would be needed

That is strange. We got competitive bids for some work on our home and included Doc’s. Their price was substantially higher than other contractors. I hear they do good work, but the contractor we ended up using did an excellent job for about half the price.

I've had Contractor A tell me to get a detailed bid from Contractor B (having Contractor B do the work of measuring and estimating) then bring it to Contractor A and they would beat the price. Seemed a bit shady. If that has happened to Doc's then I can understand why they would put as little as necessary on the bid.

Doc's was recommended to us and left us with a very good impression when they came to discuss the job. Ultimately, we decided to go with someone else due to cost.

We had a similar experience with Doc’s. We thought perhaps because it was a small job, Doc’s didn’t want it.

You know any contractor that can take out several full page ads in the local newspapers is going to be substantially higher than others. I see Doc's ads everywhere.

I would not deal with a vendor who did not supply a detailed quote.

We had Doc's quote a couple of small jobs for us. The quote guy that came out was totally incompetent, it was hard to believe.
1) We had picked out a tile sample at their store, he was unaware of that and didn't bring the sample as we'd asked. 2) He was totally unaware of the 2nd small job and said he couldn't quote that , someone else would have to come out. 3) Doc's quote was 50% higher than a couple of others.

I think we were just small potatoes and they weren't interested, but Doc's was a waste of time.

I always looked at estimates, drawings, permit applications and any other time consuming paperwork as work product. If you want to see them, then you will pay for them at my normal contractor's rate. If you don't care to pay, then you get total contract price only. I never had any problem keeping busy.

Generally speaking, Doc's Restorations is usually the highest price when you are getting estimates.
I don't know how they remain in business.

Keeping working down the list, then you will get the paperwork you want, but will you get the quality work you want? I have found the good guys have all the work they can handle so your loss won't hurt them.

I've done several home improvements over the years at different houses, some I did myself, others I had help and still others I had done by a contractor. So I feel I know what is involved in a home improvement. We decided to have our kitchen renovated (really a whole new one) and after much consideration, we decided on Doc's. Yes, we heard the different sides, but thought they had an overall good reputation.

It took a few months to get all the parts in place, they came in, cut down two walls, removed all the cabinets, installed new ones, built and island and found a way to save money on moving an electric line for the island. We got the counter top installed yesterday. All-in-all we are very happy with the all the contractors. They were professional, neat and pleasant.

Where there any hiccups in the process? Of course, but the were very small and were addressed quickly.

Would I recommend Doc's? YES! As I always tell people, you get what you pay for, if you're lucky.

We had Doc’s redo a master bath (take it down to the studs, move plumbing) about 5 years ago. Their workmanship does not hold up.

The shower pan is not leveled correctly, and the part of the floor nearest the exit does not slope to the drain, so puddles form.

The toilet was not seated correctly, and was leveled with wooden shims that disintegrated, which made the toilet wobble. It had to be reinstalled.

The finish on drain in the bathtub started discoloring almost immediately. They chose the drain, and apparently picked out a cheaper version than the one that was supposed to be installed.

They were more expensive than the other bids, but they promised higher quality and better communication. There were points during the construction that no one would show up for days and I couldn’t get any answers to emails on what was going on. I had to show up in their showroom to get any info.

I would not recommend them.
