We are thinking of replacing screen after 10 years but want to paint the metal as well. Any recommendations? Thanks

Are you changing the color of the metal? If so, you need to be very careful and get the correct type of paint and the correct preparation of the surface. Aluminum is VERY hard to paint correctly, ask any boat owner. The typical original coating is usually an anodized coating the should last a very long time. I have tried painting aluminum (a car panel) and followed all of the directions, it lasted about a year. I would call White Aluminum and ask them if it is practical to paint aluminum birdcage frame before you do this. If you are having this done, be sure the vendor actually has experience in this area and ask about a warranty.

You may want to try cleaning it. The aluminum is not painted, it is anodized a chemical process that is far more durable than paint. Screens are no longer made of aluminum, which over time oxides and turns to brittle dust. They are likely nylon, which also gets brittle with age.

I think I would call a pro. I've done screens for myself in the past. A bird cage is far beyond doing one screen.
