If you have a lawn care company, we used Deans, and they placed traps. If the lawn care company will not do this, you can place poison, but you need to be real careful, as other animals that might eat the dead rats will also be killed by the poison. Personally, I would try rat traps.

Here is a solution.

You might think so, but most of the house kitties wouldn't have a clue. Feral cats with battle scars fighting to survive could do it, but then you'd have to deal with the feral cats. I vote for traps. Lots and lots of traps.

what do you use to get rid of rats.. there are many around and i would like to get rid of them.Rodents (mice and/or rats?) made a nest inside my electric pool heater (heat pump). After I completed repairs, I called Deans which we use for termite control and insect/pest control. They placed a bait (poison) box in the area near the heat pump. This is NOT a trap.

Re: cats
If, you go that route you want a female cat they are the hunters.
As far as traps, it is interesting as to how many different traps have been invented over the years. The common snap traps work fine, the secret is the bait-try peanut butter. Poison, the one commonly used causes the rodent to bleed internally. Since they do not vomit they die a slow death and will seek water. If, they die in the walls or attic it will stink. Years ago, I was sure it was a rat. I kept needing to re-bait the trap and having it sprung but missed. In the end it was a field mouse. Finally got hm with the arm of the trap. Point a rat trap does not only get, kill rats.

You are so right. A rat trap can indeed catch more than rats. Once, while baiting a trap, the trap caught me.
O.K. let the rat jokes begin. I can take it. I'll just sit here quietly and nibble my cheese. 😊

If you or neighbors have bird feeders or throw out food for birds, you might want to stop doing that. Bird seed, crumbs and other foods like nuts or certain fruit will attract rats, mice, squirrels and more. You or your neighbors might actually be creating the problem.

Just a thought.

Often rats are driven from their normal ā€œhomesā€ by particularly wet weather, which we experienced this year.

We used Massey Services to get rid of the ones who invaded our lanai. Massey used a combination of traps (which they came and emptied when necessary) and poison outside. It took about two weeks, but we were again rat-free. I would recommend Massey highly.

The trouble with a cat is in TV you can’t leave a pet (cat) run free. Because I’m assuming the rat problem is outside, but if the rat problem is inside, well I would say there’s another issue with the owner.

Our large male Maine Coon has caught many mice and rats in our CYV outside area. (Actually I think the rats are Voles.) If he refuses to come in when called I know he is stalking something. The Egyptians worshipped cats because they caught rats that tried to eat the grain people used for food. Cats will hunt even if they aren’t hungry.

if you have Rat;s , then there is a food supply going on that is attracting them. Only through your trash out early morning on trash day not overnight, bird feeders will attract them. My thought, would not the Villages handle this problem. Ask your neighbors if they have this problem too, or is it just you. Then find the source of food. Pls do not put poison out other animals get into it and die... pls don't

Keep fruit trees off your property, and make sure any trees don't reach your roof. Rats will live in your attic easily. They splat through any crack about the size of a dime.
My dog had a friendship with stray rats. He would walk up to a few rats and they would sniff - Rat on its hind legs. Freaked the hell out of me.

Go to the website domyown.com, buy Protecta rat bait stations, fill them with Fastrac All-Weather Blox, and you will safely kill all nearby rats. I have had TEN of these all around my pool cage for about 12 years and am very pleased with the results. I check/refill them every 3 months and each time there is far less evidence of any rat activity, so I assume I am killing many rats and have seen NO evidence of rats around my house for years. Not very costly, easy to check/refill, and clearly effective.

Yes, if it produces seed pods and you let them produce fruit, cut pods out before they produce fruits.

Rodents, rats, squirrels, etc will fight back. House cats don't know how to deal with them, usually. Feral cats hunt and kill for food. Once they have eaten will go rest and digest their meal. House cats just kill. Since they aren't hungry, they don't eat their kill. They leave the inactive prey and go off to kill again. Anything that moves is fair game.

We recently saw two rats in the same day in our garage. We called our lawn and pest company, Falcon. They came out and set box traps on each side of the garage door (outside). They charged $50 to set the traps, and quarterly we pay $10 for them to check and reset. Haven’t seen one since. Worth the piece of mind for us.

Merrymini, you forgot one thing. I’m assuming the other animals are our pets. Remember they’re suppose to be on a leash. If the other animals you talking about are wild animals, you won’t know because they’ll be long gone & die elsewhere. Then you won’t have to worry about them killing someone’s pet. Not trying to sound cruel, just trying to see if we want to kill rats or worry about a rat infestation!

WRONG. FACT CHECK
Domestic cats kill between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and between 6.9 and 20.7 billion mammals (mostly mice, shrews, rabbits, squirrels, and voles) each year, according to a study published last year in Nature Communications.

So according to science songbird sandwiches are not the cats favorite delicacy. Lol. BUT…

The greatest threat to birds is LOSS OF HABITAT. Yes your little slice of paradise multiplied reduces places where birds can eat, have protection from the elements and raise their young. Cats and all predators do what nature intended, strengthen the animal/avian population by eliminating the weak.

During the 2 hour seminar that the County Extension put on for new homeowners we were told if you have cabbage palms then you automatically have a black rat population and they most likely will attract black rat snakes, and similar ones, which can be very helpful.
