View Full Version : Permanently Closed - Starbucks 466?

Yes, I know you don’t patronize it, don’t like the coffee, don’t pay that much for coffee, etc ( just heading off the obvious at the pass), but the Starbucks on 466 has been “temporarily closed” for a week now - corporate downsizing? Lack of employees? It was doing a pretty brisk business when open….

No. The store on Wedgewood Lane near Rt 466 is temporarily closed due to "wifi issues".
Obviously, you can't drink coffee without wifi.

I like Starbucks, well enough. And if I want a coffee and it is the only practical option, will pay the price. But why a particular shop closes doesn't matter much to me since there are generally lots of other choices.
My preferred cup of "Joe" is my keurig dispensing a hot mug of Tim Horton's dark roast. No cream, no sugar, no flavored syrups.

They have been having problems because the underinformed mgmt and verizon decided that the place could operate on a hot spot which is impossible.
self drowning? probably so. I'd venture that they drove themselves into the ground based on duh.

During my working life on the West Coast, we often found ourselves in a coffee battle with vendors from the East Coast. They could not believe we could drink gallons of "burnt coffee" from places like Starbucks. We were stunned the day they took us to a Dunkn Donuts for some "real" coffee. Different strokes for different folks but seriously, Dunkn Donuts?

I read that starbucks employees in Buffalo, NY are trying to unionize. Also, I believe another coffee chain (local, named Spot Cofee)in Buffalo actually did unionize a few years ago.

Apparently a lightning strike fried their WiFi system. That means they can’t accept mobile orders, drive thru orders, communicate between internal computers or process credit cards and SB gift cards. Would have to be cash only and waitstaff the window.
Temporarily closing the doors until fixed was a better option than having disgruntled customers ragging on the staff all day long.

I was at the Walmart grocery over by Colony checking out when the guy putting my groceries in bags told the cashier he had to go over and close the liquor store. It was around 5:30. I asked him why because I thought it was open quite a bit later than that. He said he had to close it because they didn’t have anyone to work there that evening. I know there seems to be a lot of that these days so I guess inflation isn’t hurting people that much or they could get a first or second job there. I worked part time at Walmart when I was a young single mother. I would go there as soon as I got off work from my day job to help make ends meet. I know, blah blah blah etc.🙂🙃🤔

Many modern, fast serve restaurants, require wifi for operations. The system regulates everything. They are not set up for old school, point of sale out of a cigar box.

Well I like Starbucks coffee, and I can distinguish between 466 and 466A, and in general I drink Starbucks out of my Keurig, no waiting. The holiday blend, out this time of year, is particularly good. And if you read this entire thread start to finish, you start to chuckle and end up laughing.

I’ve been enjoying the thread and have been reading parts of it to my son-in-law, who is an information security/IT architect. He said “why don’t they just install a new router?”
I also have never cared for SB’s coffee, but apparently a lot of people do.
Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I enjoy the Starbucks on 466 it’s a nice comfortable place and I usually stop there couple of times a week and same at the one on 466a which is a very big Starbucks , I only drink a small black coffee and the price is not out of line with other shops. They both have more staff then you would think they would need , maybe because they pay them . I like a nice coffee shop , sure I can have a cup at home , but for me a nice coffee shop , just like a nice bar are a couple of life’s simple pleasures

I believe I read earlier (it may have even been on the SB site or app, though I don't see it there now) that they were closed with a reopening on Monday the 29th so that would probably jibe with the idea of network problems needing to be fixed. I recall that I had to pay cash at the drive thru about a month ago at this store because they had problems that day.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving everyone! **IF** that is the actual reason they are closed my guess is they don't simply pick up a router at Best Buy. Their system must require a specially and highly protected router/firewall since it handles all their transactions etc.
THAT BEING SAID, While I have no idea I'd bet that isn't the real reason as the fix could have been done a lot faster..
Had you seen Starbucks in LSL at 10AM this morning, you would know where most of their addicted customers probably ended up. It was a zoo. Line was out the door and people were waiting outside it was so packed. Took 21 minutes from time of order on our app as we left home till it was ready. The employees there were amazing, working together like a fine tuned machine in a tiny store. Kudos to them.

So $2.70 for a cup of hot coffee with free refills all day (if you have their app) is so terrible? Hey, we all have our vices. I don't smoke so I figure all the thousands I saved over the years makes up for the "expensive" coffee. :D I did try Panera's $10/month unlimited coffee which they are constanly pushing to get you into the store but after the 3rd day I gave it up. Other than it tasting like barely hot coffee flavored water I couldn't deal with all the folks tripping over themselves at the coffee dispenser as well as the lady constantly hawking political paraphernalia blocking the dispensers during the height of covid last year with no mask spitting on the counter when she yelled. :D :D

I believe without WiFi their registers, which are tied to the inventory, credit card readers, etc won’t work. I don’t think in today’s world, stores can’t temporarily go to tried and true paper and pencils. Who would do the math?😀.

What's over priced at Starbucks is those fancy lattes, cappuccinos and other sweet drinks. Their good old black coffee no sugar is in line with every other coffee shop including Dunkin. I buy Starbucks dark roast for home and have for years. About 1% of the time I stop at a Starbucks shop. So far as the burnt taste all I can say is not everyone likes that variety. After all not many like a straight shot of whiskey but prefer a mellow tasting cocktail, beer or wine. My late dad use to say there's a arse for every seat, same for coffee.

I like the panini sandwiches at Starbucks. I earn "mypoints" credits and other sorts of credits from various rewards/survey programs. Sometimes I toss the reward into my Starbucks account, and go over for a sandwich that day. Once in a blue moon if I'm out for a day-trip and just want to relax somewhere between spots, I'll get their Pike Place with room for half and half, and dump in some cocoa powder and a little sugar to make myself a cafe mocha. Otherwise you have to pay them extra to make it for you. I generally don't ever actually pay for Starbucks out of pocket, I use earned credits.
I usually only drink one cup of coffee every day and that's my morning cappuccino made (usually) with Cafe Bustelo or Pilon when I can find it on sale. I use a Keurig Cafe, with a metal filter and normal brick of ground espresso beans.

No, they always used to have a tin of it next to the tin of cinnamon, where you add your own milk and other fixins.
There was cinnamon, and cocoa, and nutmeg.
