Drive,or be on top of your neighbors home, very high monthly frees, don't play golf, cannot stand the heat, very far from malls, alot of traffic in season, renter, not gated communities, restrictions,. Otherwise go their. These are things that you will never here but are very impotant when you buy and home.

First of all, spellcheck is your friend. Secondly, you’re right. The Villages is not for everyone. Third, yes, it’s hot and humid. That’s what Florida weather is like.

I hope you find someplace that suits you.

Not even going to address the other points (I am sure others will) BUT
If you don’t golf and can’t stand the heat, what made you think you would enjoy living in the largest golf course community in the world in a hot climate?

If you are unable to drive and don't have a car what is your problem with in season traffic? Monthly fees are not high, you should be glad you're not part of an HOA, the only restrictions here are the ones noted on your deed and if you are a homeowner you were given a copy before you signed the papers and now that you're leaving you will make a handsome profit on your home. If you are not a homeowner and are a renter, don't complain, just pack up and go somewhere else when your lease is up. Now go out and enjoy this great autumn weather while those up north are complaining about the snow and cold.

You mean like most places in Florida?????

Except.......most places in Florida you need to drive to almost everything you need, in TV you can get to most places by golf cart

most places in Florida have HOA fees that range from $450 to over $800 per month, here it is about $160.

most places in Florida have traffic far worse than here in TV

Most places in Florida have deed and or HOA restrictions

The only part of that rant that was posted that is true is that TV is not a true gated community---you can live in one but your monthly fee will be in the $800+ range. Oh, did I mention that those gated communities generally have ONE golf course, ONE clubhouse, and all activities are limited to whatever is being run at that clubhouse. For our $160 amenity fee we get 42 executive golf courses, and 13 "championship" courses are here for a greens fee. Over 100 pools, 100 recreation centers of various types and sizes, over 100 miles of MMPs with new dedicated bike and pedestrian paths south of 44, and flowers in the RB's changed out 4x/year. As far as our gates go, they are mainly for traffic control, but they have cameras 24/7 and community watch drives by every house in TV a minimum of 3x/day.

If you truly want to avoid everything you listed and live in Florida, may I suggest the middle of the Everglades. Just watch out for 20 foot snakes. But you still have the heat, so the other choice might be Fairbanks , Alaska.

So....please tell us...what place provides all of those things that TV does not provide, and has better weather, is fully gated, close to malls (do they still have malls?), low traffic in season, and you don't need a car, all, of course, with monthly fees lower than TV.

I have attempted to deconstruct your sentence in an effort to figure out exactly what the word "renter" is communicating. I am clueless. Perhaps you could explain a bit about "renter"?

Probably just trolling to get a reaction but I'll respond any way.

That's why you do research before you buy anywhere in any state. Most of the things you list as objectionable about The Villages are true for most planned developments in Florida. Not being able to drive or want to own a car is not a drawback here I have friends who don't drive or own a car but have a golf cart that allows them to go anywhere in the Villages. Don't play golf - there are hundreds of clubs for almost any interest. Far from malls - if you're talking mega malls so is every home outside of the Villages in Lady Lake, Fruitland Park, Summerfield, Wildwood. Traffic - same everywhere in Florida in season and in many places all year. Not gate communities - the Marion County portion of the Villages is gated you can't just push a button to get in. However, as I understand it the home owners in those villages are responsible for road maintenance while the Sumter County portion roads are maintained by the county. Restrictions - every gated community in Florida has them and so do many counties. Many are more restrictive than the Villages. High fees - many places are higher without the amenities we have. Be on top of your neighbor - the property I have here is exactly the same size I had in Long Island but house is bigger. Renter - there are rental units here both apartments and houses. And the big one "cannot stand the heat" - it's Florida if you don't want heat move to a far northern state cause the heat is here to stay.

Been here 20 years don't love everything about it but the good outweighs the bad.

I'm pretty sure the OP doesn't live here nor does he want to live here. He's just listing reasons not to move here from Long Island, NY. Probably he's never even been here. I think his "knowledge" has been formed from reading complaints about this or that on TOTV.

Take the climate. We find the climate here to be preferable to that of south Texas, where it is extremely hot and humid in the summer and can be extremely cold and damp in the winter. Notice to OP: Some people like hot weather.

Poster forgot to mention "Above all don't drink the water" It not even a secret > The Villages puts something in the water that makes "almost" everyone living here thinking its the best place on earth, why didn't we move here sooner. I've heard its something called H20 and they offer you a free bottle if you visit one of the many information centers. Don't even think about accepting one and trying it. So could you not get in or did you have to leave. You won’t win your argument here. Car is not needed as all shopping can be done by cart or online. Fees are great, people are great and there is plenty to do if you don’t golf. Life is too short to be so negative. And if you want to see traffic go up to Boston or New York.

I moved here because my parents lived here and i wanted to be close to them physically to help them out. My dad passed away and my mother is at a local nursing home so i continue to live here. I love my home but other than that, I am in complete agreement with what the initial writer posted. I dream of the day I can get out of here. The posters who say this place is not an HOA crack me up. Call it amenity fees or HOA fees it’s the same thing. You have rules and regulations everywhere. For all practical purposes, it’s an HOA. And selling your home and making money. That’s funny, too. Maybe at the present time because home prices have gone up. But the focus here is in selling new homes and not your older home. However, i am happy for the people who love it here. Good for you! You found your spot. Someday i hope to find mine, too.

Since the 80's, who uses, cares, or could even find a viable Shopping Mall? Most Malls, if they still exist, are junk flea market-type vendors, shoe stores, vape shops/tattoo parlors, and a strange food court. However, if a shopping Mall and affordability is what you desire: Check out the 55+ mobile home park "Lakes at Leesburg". It is right next door to the run-down Lake Square Mall and you'll find everything air-conditioned and affordable. You can even ride your Golf cart to Home Depot. Also, Steak and Shake is right across the street with the value meal list of "under $5 meal deals".

Perhaps maybe Joe was talking about a person he knows in TV that was complaining? Nowhere did he mention he was moving. Secondly, a week today everyone was sitting at their Thanksgiving table giving thanks. How can one give Thanks, then be so cruel the next week. There is no need to make fun of someone. And for the comments of the spelling, Hello, it could happen when using your cell phone keyboard. Why is it so hard to be nice but so easy to be cruel to another human being...

I did a lot of researching before deciding on TV, so can offer one solution if unhappy here. If shopping is important...like one of the most important things...Lakewood Ranch is the place to move to. Like TV, they also have "villages" that make up LR with two of them being 55+. Right outside LR on University Drive there is a massive amount of shopping to include a mall. There is also a Total Wine store, which was pretty impressive. One exit north of LR is a Costco. As an added bonus, all "villages" are truly gated.

For me, there were several negatives. First, non golf-cart community, so everything involves driving. It's a fairly big development, so there is a lot of driving! The HOA fees were a downside and seemed to be starting at $550 a month (amount depended on the "village"). The two 55+ developments were not all that nice had had minimal clubs and activities. The LR focus really is on families.

All that being said, if all you want is shopping and gated communities it's probably your best choice.

Funny my hoa fee is $217 and I get free internet 300 channels on my TV etc. You must be thinking of those high price condos in Miami. Yes the villages is not for people who don't drive or know how to use a golf cart but there are about 20 Senior communities in the area and almost all of them have hundreds of clubs to join to meet new people and that's probably the number one advantage of being in a community like ours or yours or theirs

I live in the villages and could easily live here without a car. There are 5 golf car accessible grocery stores near us. We are involved in many activities besides golf. I have heard only 50% of residents play golf. Softball is very popular. The fees are very reasonable compared to other communities.
The heat is part of being in Florida. We found we could acclimate by spending time outside and NOT using the A/C in the car.

I hope you find someplace that suits you.

Bjeanj- we lived in TV for 8 yrs. then moved to Texas for a reason that suits us. Believe me summers in Texas are a heck of a lot hotter than TV. We had 2+ weeks of 110 degrees & very seldom got less than 90. But from Nov. thru Mar. it’s cold to jacket weather. This is just my opinion, everybody is different about hot, warm or cold weather!

Drive,or be on top of your neighbors home, very high monthly frees, don't play golf, cannot stand the heat, very far from malls, alot of traffic in season, renter, not gated communities, restrictions,. Otherwise go their. These are things that you will never here but are very impotant when you buy and home.
Come on man….tell us what’s really bothering you?😩

Bjeanj- we lived in TV for 8 yrs. then moved to Texas for a reason that suits us. Believe me summers in Texas are a heck of a lot hotter than TV. We had 2+ weeks of 110 degrees & very seldom got less than 90. But from Nov. thru Mar. it’s cold to jacket weather. This is just my opinion, everybody is different about hot, warm or cold weather!

Holy smokes! That is really hot!

So you don’t live here anymore?

I have lived in The Villages for 7 yrs & love it. I don't have a car but I do have two golf carts. One is a convertible. Yes there are a couple of places I can't get to by cart so I take UBER/ LYFT. I may spend up to $100 per month on the taxi's. Consider what a car costs. So-So So many activities here, I have never found any place to compare. If you know of one please let me know. I'm up for a second home/condo.

Bingo!! It's not the way I do it, but it makes a lot more sense than the way I do it.:)

I think it’s ironic you complain about traffic coming from Long Island. :ohdear:

Been there, done that. They finally took down the temporary ten cent toll on the Southern State years after it was supposed to end. It was not only slowing traffic but it cost more to collect it than it brought in. That connects to the Belt Parkway, they have been repairing it for the past 50 years. Hope of them finishing it-zero. Traffic? How about taxes?

Real Estate? Prices are sky rocketing in Florida. People in NY are running from the crime.

Reality, we can chose to be happy or miserable anywhere. It is a choice. Re: Older home vs new home. Assuming you have an older home, it is worth far more than you paid for it. I'm no cockeyed optimist but some look at a lawn and see the weeds others see the flowers-it is a choice. It is the same lawn.

Well, as Mom used to say when we complained; "you'd b_tch if you were hung with a new rope". Never really did figure out what that meant. But to each his own, I guess.

I've never heard that one before. But, it is a good one. Rope used to be made from natural fiber. Usually hemp, same as marijuana. In any case when, new it is hard and scratchy.
A well used rope would be far softer. With either you would end up dead from a hanging but, at least a used rope would not irritate your neck as much. Do not antagonize the hangman is also sage advice. Perhaps, delivered before a good discussion before an application of a belt. Some people have difficulty with reality testing.

PS: January 1st 2010 saw 40,627 new laws on the books in the USA
40,000 Laws going into effect on one New Year’s Day, makes you wonder how many laws there are on the books in this country. Good luck avoiding the "rules", might I suggest the "Village of Anarchy"?:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

I've read our federal tax law is 86,000 pages.

Rules, years ago I got a printed copy of the New York ticket code. I don't recall why I requested it. Likely fighting yet another ticket. Some that I remember, not sure if it is also true in Florida but I expect it is. You cannot leave your car in the same place for 24 hours, that is storing your car on the street. If, you look hard enough, you will likely have a mark on your windshield from a pebble. They can ticket you for that. Hanging junk from your mirror is also illegal. So is driving barefoot. Sort of makes me wonder. If, you have a sunpass, can they claim it blocks your vision.

You can and should claim some of these things are an abuse of power.

This is a Hugh draw back for seniors over 75 years old. If they did this myself then housand of other seniors would consider buying there. This is my opinions please respect my opinion.

OK, consider your opinion "respected".

However, just what kind of transportation is "free"---there are drivers, vehicles, maintenance and gas that all cost money. Include it in the amenity fee? Why should I pay for someone else's transportation? There are multiple transportation options inside the villages, and I don't see it as a huge? drawback, and I doubt "thousands" of other would either. Besides, where else can an over 75 senior live that includes "free" transportation other than an all inclusive facility, usually an apartment building with a concierge at a pretty high monthly rent.

So I guess you are NOT an educated consumer. Most smart people do research on an area that they are looking to move to and get credible information on the area. I for one researched The Villages online for over a year. Then on a visit to relatives in Orlando we drove up to TV and did a quick tour for a couple of days to see if it was worth a Lifestyle Visit, and it was. We then scheduled a Lifestyle visit during the off season and then again during high season to gage different things like traffic. Then one more visit in a non Lifestyle Visit rental home and rented a golf cart also too. check out even more thing like what type of home and where. Went home and talked about it, decided yes this is it. Knowing what we wanted and having a good working relationship with our agent we watch online and purchased a home by phone/internet/agent. But we were prepared and extremely happy. Thanks to Gerry Andrews!

I agree with your idea, but not for that reason or with that methodology. I'm 100% in favor of some sort of community-based "public transportation" system. I've posted as such previously. Not amenity-fee (though perhaps a % of all amenity fees collected could go toward the initial purchase of an office, garage, and vehicles) based. More like a public tram system where trams will stop at rec centers to pick up and drop off passengers, and make a stop at one (or two) of the town squares, and one (or two, or three) shopping/medical centers.

Maybe with a paid monthly pass, paid unlimited day-pass, and paid 3-day passes for visitors. Could even have seasonal passes, or yearly passes. No "senior discount" because it'd be assumed the passenger is a senior.

The passes would be directly connected to your Villager ID or visitor's ID pass. Scan and board, easy peasy.

That is a wonderful idea, but possibly a bit too Utopian at this time.

Pretty much anyone who is able to drive a car or a golf cart will generally want to do so, and that is easily 95+% of the population of TV.
So, this leaves people who can no longer drive a vehicle, but aren't ready for assisted living or a nursing facility, and don't live a short walk away from what they want, such as those in the Brownwood Lofts. So it is not a necessity for very many residents.
Meanwhile, given the size of TV, and the number of Rec Centers, pools, restaurants, stores, and medical offices, it would require quite a few "trolleys" at a substantial cost. And remember, those passengers still have to get to the trolley stop. Will the trollies be handicapped accessible? Will they accommodate scooters and electric wheelchairs? Will the driver assist these people? How long will a "circuit" be? How much will loading 2 or 3 mobility devices delay the route? Will people have to stand 1/2 an hour in the rain to catch these trollies.

I didn't mean to rain on your parade, because I agree it is a good idea. But it appears to be cost prohibitive as well as having a multitude of logistical problems.

It's not entirely utopian, this is already an option in some communities (albeit much smaller than ours). It's also not just for people who can't drive. It's also for people who want to let someone else do the driving for a change. It's a convenience. It reduces traffic, which is ALWAYS a good thing.

Some tram systems have elevating wheelchair ramps with space designated for wheelchairs. Scooters, no. Wheelchairs, yes. Some public transit systems have built their buses to carry bicycles on the front as well, so that's also a thing.

A tram isn't really a trolley (I had edited it, you probably responded to it pre-edit). A tram is more like a high-powered golf cart with 5-6 benches, each of which can accommodate 3-4 people. They're more or less open-air, with guard rails and a roof but no walls.

As for routing: you'd need "local" trams, a "central location," and regional commuter buses (those are the small ones like Workman has to get folks to the airport).

Local trams would be something like - a circuit that goes from Morse and 44 to points south - Monarch Grove, Citrus Grove, etc and up to Brownwood town square. Another one that would go 44 and Morse up to 466A and then around southwesterly to Brownwood town square. Another might go from somewhere on/near 466A and Morse northward, while another might go from 466A and Buena Vista Blvd northward. Each "local" tram would stop at the closest town square to them, and the closest shopping or medical center closest to them. One that connects up by Legacy and over Camino Real around the Savannah Center, and one that goes from the Savannah Center down Buena Vista to 466, stopping at the Polo grounds. There would be overlap, which is how it SHOULD work - so points south come north, points north go south, west and east meet in the middle as well.

Then - a "regional" would go from one town square to another, stopping only at strategic points (not going to rec centers). Brownwood would go to Sumter, Sumter would go to Spanish Springs. Maybe Brownwood would have another regional one going to the new Sawgrass (is that what it's called?)? Or perhaps it would be Sumter that does that.

There'd be 2-3 trams for each route so that there's always one coming back, one leaving, and one somewhere out in the distance furthest from the start and finish line.

Then there'd be the "direct route" buses that connect ONLY at the town squares. Great for folks who do monthly lunches in groups and don't want to take 10 golf carts or 5 cars, and want to make a day of it.

Imagine a bus taking you to your evening at the town square for dinner and dancing during market night or the antique car shows, and not having to worry about a parking space, or driving, or (because you know it happens) drinking and driving. Not having to pay a fortune for Uber, IF you can even find one available when you happen to want one.
