View Full Version : Golf Cart turn signals (blinkers NOT hands signals). Outlaw them completely.

This may look or sound like a troll post but it really isn't meant to be. More like a rant and a safety warning. Having turn signals on golf carts is, in reality is both useless and dangerous.
At this point when I see a golf cart with a turn signal on when (for example) I am pulling out of my street or any street either in my cart or my car and the cart coming towards me has his right signal on the chances of him ACTUALLY taking a right turn is probably 80% which means if I pull out there is a 20% chance he (or she) is going to t-bone me.
I see this time after time. One has to assume the turn signals on the cart are on by mistake and assume the cart is going straight regardless of his signal. This obviously doesn't apply to everyone but even assuming 5% of them are on by mistake it makes it dangerous to assume ANY are actually turning when they are signalling.
What bought this on was today while walkng from Amelia to LSL (down O'Dell then on the Morse MMP to LSL) my wife and I counted FIVE CARTS on the O'Dell and Morse MMP passing by us with forever on turn signals out of probably 15 or 20.
So what good is having a turn signal if you can't trust it? Better that NO CART has one. I mean the number of signals left on for literally miles is amazing. YES, CARS DO IT AS WELL but very rarely do I see a car driving with endless turn signals (although sometimes they turn them on about 1/2 mile before the turn! :D
At least if NO ONE used them you would HAVE to wait until the cart either turned or passed. Yea, I know it is impossible to retroactively remove them all but everyone may as well not use them as they are totally worthless if they can't be "trusted" 98% of the time.
Hand signals (if you know them) are fine but stop using those useless "blinkers."

Not to blame our seasonal residents, but I have seen a lot more carts driving with their signals on as our seasonal resident population has increased. They 1) do not realize the signals are not self-cancelling, 2) cannot hear the signal beeping over the cart motor. What surprises me are the number of “younger” drivers driving with the signal on. I am not talking about teenagers…

Golf cart blinkers are a nice idea that hasn't made the grade. They are typically non-cancelling, tiny after thoughts that transmit a dangerous lie to those waiting to see if the cart is really going to turn or not.
I never pull out in front of an approaching cart, blinker or not. They absolutely cannot be trusted. Sorry, ****ed off driver behind me honking. I will not let you try to intimidate me into a potential accident, and shame on you for ever thinking you have the right to do so.

For us, and since we walk every day, it is just as bad all year but the best chuckle is when you see a group of 3 all with "forever signals." on trucking down the MMP. :)

We have self cancelling on one cart and lights in front of our face blinking on the other cart to remind us to turn them off. When pulling out I always figure people are going straight so I wait.

I don't ever trust turn signals on any vehicle until I see them actually commit to turning. Also the self canceling mechanism for signals on carts are finicky and sometimes need to be adjusted or replaced.

ABSOLUTELY! If you are at all familiar with the villages, give golf carts a wide birth and just give them a break if you're in a car or another golf cart.
If in doubt, wait it out! There should be some legal requirements for people selling golf carts for the Villages to have signals that are too obvious to leave on after the turn. Our cart has lights in the side mirrors that don't always suffice. After a few hundred more hours behind the wheel of the cart I might always remember to turn it off after the turn.

Self-cancel is great but are meaningless to resolve this issue because if many others never shut them off whether yours does or doesn't won't resolve the general problem.

This is some major first world problems. Yea, especially when you pull out of a street in a cart OR a car because you see a cart coming down the diamond lane with it's right turn signal on but then goes straight without turning. You might find that to be a problem no matter what world you may live in.

Well ,OP everything you said is true but there really is no solution. It’s very similar to turn signals being used in roundabouts. If you trust them you are an idiot so why do people even use them. At least 25% don’t use them properly and besides if you are in the correct lane for your exit all should flow properly

It's not the turn signals fault, it's the drivers. They should be 'cancelled'. If they don't know to turn them off as soon as they make the turn, they shouldn't be driving. My turn signals make noise (which I at first thought was annoying) and a light inside that flashes when they are on. Too many people on the road who can't see or hear or remember the signal is still on.

About 22 1/2 years ago I made several posts about turn signal flashers for golf carts that beep loudly when on. They are $10.00 or less on Amazon. They are so annoying you will be glad to turn the signal off after the turn. If everyone got one of these, it would greatly reduce this issue.

Not sure how it's any different than the drivers riding their blinkers while in their on road vehicles or not paying attention to right of way at 2 and 4 way stops. Assume "the other guy" will not do the right thing and drive accordingly. Simple!

This is true with cars too. How many cars have their right hand turn signals on and instead of turning they go straight. I like turn signals on both golf carts and cars and I will always wait until the car/cart coming toward me slows down before I trust them

I’ve had the same thought about cars. Not enough drivers use them and, as you noted, sometime the signal is left on or turned on too early. Simply ban all turn signaling devices on moving vehicles.

Knowing that blinker signals are not trustworthy, simply DO NOT pull out in front of one unless you have plenty of distance to do so. Who cares if you have to wait an additional 20 seconds?
You can’t control what other drivers do. Assume they are not paying attention and YOU will drive defensively!

I think the newer carts have self-canceling. I also understand that if you pull out in front of a vehicle (because you thought they were turning) you are at fault, not the vehicle with the turn signal on that did not turn. As said above, never proceed into the intersection until the vehicle with the turn signal on has committed to the turn. Otherwise, you will be at fault for the accident. (This is true in Michigan - Maybe Florida is different)

Self-cancel is great but are meaningless to resolve this issue because if many others never shut them off whether yours does or doesn't won't resolve the general problem.
I'll bet that 99% of the "forever" signals are simply because drivers did not cancel after making a turn. No on turns on the blinker for no reason. Self-canceling turn signals would solve 99% of the issue...........and 1% of automobiles have this issue as well.

Oh I totally agree with you. They put seat belts in carts now but most golf carts don’t have turn signals that automatically turn off after you turn, so how does TV think this is safe when some people forget to turn their turn signals off after they turn. Then you have the anxious person laying on their horn because you don’t turn when a person has their turning signal on & this person doesn’t turn. Good quote FdFNJ!

I hate it more when people turn without using the turn signals than those who forget that they are not self-canceling.
I have used loaner carts that, like the older carts, don’t have any indicators on the golf to let the driver know that the turn signal is still on. Sometimes, I remembered to turn it off and sometimes I didn’t. A lot of times I had to double check and I had both signals going to be sure they were off.
You should realize that you were driving in an older area of the villages and the carts are not self cancelling or do not have indicators to let the driver know that the signals are on.
Lastly, in the long run, who cares? I’m tired of seeing stuff like this that people think is important when they need to take a “chill pill”. Life is short. Be glad you’re not 6 feet under!

In. many carts turn signals don't make a clicking sound so people forget to turn them off. I myself was guilty of that many times. My friend ordered a part from Amazon that he installed and now I hear a clicking sound to remind me to turn the signals off.

You can make the same argument about people driving cars and not using turn signals, cutting across the right land from the left at Round-abouts, etc. Having been here four months, I feel far safedr on the cart paths than on some of the main roads.
Bottom line, NEVER assume ANYTHING, wait the extra couple of seconds to me sure what is happening with ANY vehicle.

The key here who's at fault if you pull out in front of oncoming traffic? This is no different between that golf cart and a car coming at you. If you can't pull out safely, DON'T do it. Is it worth the court costs and possible death of another villager? Slow down, take a breath, and understand you may be saving a life.

The new carts like the Star have self cancelling turn signals. I'm sure the rest will follow. We need signals.

I had led "liquid lights" installed on our cart with some put on the inside roof support. They are hooked up to the turn signal and are very bright and flash on the inside of the cart. Can't miss them. The cart also came with a loud turn signal beep.
I agree with the poster that asked why everyone is in such a hurry that they can't be patient with those that forget to turn off their signals. Just like in the stores while shopping, when folks say "sorry" or "excuse me" when maneuvering a shopping cart, I respond "no big deal, I'm retired and in no hurry." I have plenty of time, I think.
Does anyone ever notice that some folks just HAVE to complain about insignificant issues? I don't know about the rest of you, but I never thought that I would ever live long enough to enjoy my retirement, and I really do enjoy being retired. Talk about being blessed!
If I was put on the spot to complain about anything related to golf cart traffic, I guess the only gripe I have is how many driving a golf cart do not believe that STOP signs pertain to them and just breeze right through without even slowing down. I just shake my head and wonder what kind of hurry would cause someone to jeopardize their safety. On the other hand, stupid actions only serve to prolong the longevity of Social Security.

REALITY, you are in control of what you do. Others there is what they are supposed to do a totally different thing. Turn signals? An endless debate. I doubt many people in cars or golf carts could/would pass a driver's test. Turn signals people who use them are rare. People who use them properly are like an endangered species.
People who know the law and follow it are also an endangered species. As far as a golf cart. A golf cart is the bottom of the totem pole. A car a, pedestrian and even a bicycle have the right of way. A signal, light or hand signal does not change the situation.
The golf cart yields to the car. That does not mean that when a car driver sees that a golf cart is announcing his DESIRE to cut in the car should slow down and give the golf cart room to do it safely.
Any vehicle with a turn signal, I let them start the turn before assuming they have truly decided they are turning and will not as we've all seen start a turn to the left and then change their mind and go right or go straight or??????????.

I don't ever trust turn signals on any vehicle until I see them actually commit to turning. Also the self canceling mechanism for signals on carts are finicky and sometimes need to be adjusted or replaced.
I completely agree and that goes for CARS/TRUCKS on the roadways as well. I NEVER trust a turn signal until I see the driver commit to the turn, right hand or left hand.
You can wait behind me for a few seconds or be the witness at the scene and in court for hours and days. Be a defensive driver I was always taught.

I humbly suggest you read up on round a bouts. The proper procedure according to me, is nuts but they do have the right to make a right hand turn from the left hand land. Like most driving, assuming the other driver know the rules and more important, will follow them is a reach.

Sorry OP we use both hand and turn signals. Yesterday while turning left from car lane, into postal center, using both hand and turn signal a car passed me on the LEFT (double yellow) as I was about to turn. Scared the crap out of us. My rider took pictures with phone, Florida plate, so full time in FL, with two people inside.
So guessing some who live here hates carts so much they are happy to run them over to decrease carts on the road, or not happy I was using hand signals.

There's nothing wrong with the turn signals. There's everything wrong with the driver. Anyone who's driven a golf cart more than a week, should already be in the habit of turning the signal off either while you're making the turn, or immediately after making the turn.
It takes 10 repetitions of a ritual before it becomes habit. Those folks who never turn their signals off, are people who have never tried to turn their signals off.
Everyone forgets once in awhile. But there are repeat offenders who need someone in authority to start handing out tickets for that. You're right. It's dangerous. Get caught once, get a warning and a note added to your ID (or drivers license if you don't have a villagers ID). Get caught twice, get a written warning and added note to the ID. Third time - you get a ticket and pay a fine.
By the third time, the police or community watch will know to actively look for your golf cart. You will automatically be under suspicion so get with the program, or pay a bigger fine.
Refusal to pay fines could result in your gate passes being invalidated, and future guest passes recalled/rejected.

One cannot trust them in automobiles either. About 1/3 of the time they don’t signal and other times they have it on way too far in advance.
Yes, they are wrong, but you need to handle traffic in any manner, defensively, not ban a good practice. Do you think they will signal at all?

We have a community of 130,000 people, and probably 50,000 to 80,000 golf carts. I don't see or read about a lot of golf cart fatalities or golf cart accidents. So if we just keep driving the way we are, everything will be ok. And quit blaming everything on the snow birds, most of them won't be here until Jan 1. Be happy we have snow birds, because without them we would have all this big city congestion all the time, and besides that, they drop a boatload of money when they are here. All the business's love them. Chill out.

In. many carts turn signals don't make a clicking sound so people forget to turn them off. I myself was guilty of that many times. My friend ordered a part from Amazon that he installed and now I hear a clicking sound to remind me to turn the signals off.
Do you have a link to that ? Thanks

When I first got my cart I found myself quite often driving down the street with my blinkers on. My cart does not have self cancelling blinkers. They show up in the side mirrors and are almost impossible to see during the daylight hours. It is easy to forget to turn them off (no excuse but it happens just the same). I wanted my cart to be safer and more visible especially during dusk and after dark. I had Liquid Lights put additional lights on the body and back so I could be more easily seen. Additionally I had them install lights on windshield/roof support frame. The strip of blinking lights is about 6" on each frame and impossible for me to miss. They are extremely bright especially at night and remind me immediately to turn the blinker off. I feel much safer knowing I have provided other drivers and myself the best visibility I can. It is then up to me to be an alert and defensive operator. I recently added seat belts as well. Driving a golf cart or a motorcycle can be dangerous and a good thought may be to remind oneself that in an accident even if I am "right" I'm still "wrong". There may not be a second chance. An accident with a much larger vehicle is a no win situation for anyone.

TV Rental carts have no indicators or sound to let you know if you've forgotten the signal.
I've been a resident for 11 years and do appx 3k miles per year in my cart, rented a cart for a weekend and caught myself leaving the signal on.
The rental cart signal is usually by the drink holders. Hard to see. Or if you look at any Yamaha gas gauge you will see it flashing...

There are no right hand turns in a roundabout only exits .
You're supposed to use a turn signal when exiting from one road to another. If you were to NOT turn right, you'd continue going around in the circle - forever. An exit off a roundabout is, technically, a right turn. You're moving counter-clockwise - which is in a leftward direction - until you exit. And then you turn right to get out of that circle. Even if you're going "straight" you're not actually going straight. By the time you get to that exit, your vehicle is still turned as though it was heading to the NEXT exit. But you're not going there, you're exiting now. And so - you put your turn signal on so people know you're about to leave the circle.
This is especially important if you're exiting from the inside lane because you have to cross over the outside lane to get to that exit.

[I think the newer carts have self-canceling. (This is true in Michigan - Maybe Florida is different)]
We have a new cart on order. Self-cancelling signals are a $300.00 option on brand new carts.

Treat golf cars/carts as automobiles. Both are supposed to signal when turning but many don’t. The reverse is also there where a signal is made and it fails to turn off after a turn. The question I have for anyone is would you pull out in front of a car or truck that has their turn signal on with the chance that they are actually turning? I don’t because just as many autos and trucks (especially) have the same problem and accidents occur by jumping the gun. Use common sense when you are driving or walking and lean toward the safety side of the situation.

My blinkers are so loud they're obnoxious. You'd have to be literally deaf to not not acknowledge them.

It’s worse when someone forgets to reset their turn signal & they don’t turn & you pull out in front of them. Yes, both ways are bad!

Regardless, when you encounter another vehicle, never base your driving decisions upon turn signals. Always drive defensively. That means the other vehicle is probably giving you a clue regarding their direction, but might not be. Cover all of the possibilities and stay safe. Turn signals communicate likely direction. That is helpful to safety-conscious drivers. For example, never pull out in front of a vehicle signaling a turn toward your side of the highway. Their intention might be to turn, but a turn in a street or driveway just beyond your position. If you pull out in front of them every one is at risk.

When my Dad taught me to drive, he told me to look at everyone around me, think of the stupidest thing they could possibly do, assume they will probably do it, and be prepared to react. After almost 60 years, I fully accept the wisdom of his guidance.

Your article is pointless because you are embellishing about this whole situation. Yes from time to time this happens but not near as much as you claim. It's very foolish to tell people to stop using their blinkers.

I also always wait the extra 15 or 20 seconds for the golf cart to pass just in case. It’s NOT that big of a deal. Most new carts have self cancelling now and in time most will be. But just as I wouldn’t pull out in front of a car with their signal on until I see they commit to the turn, why would I do it in front of a cart?

Wait, Are you saying you saw a Car with a turn signal on. That’s shocking news. I didn’t know they installed them in cars anymore.
BMW stopped installing them years ago... (ducks for cover...)

Hand signals (if you know them) are fine but stop using those useless "blinkers."
About 3/4 of the people using hand signals are not using the correctly
Trust me... Any time I use a "hand signal", it's used correctly. And it's deserved! :1rotfl:

Disconnected my beeper and drove around for weeks with my signals on. Reconnected the beeper.

Yeah I stopped to let someone who was taking a right, do so. They had their hand up to signal their intention.
Turns out, they were just waving to someone on their front porch next to the corner.
Hand signals are also useless at night.
Use turn signals correctly, and this wouldn't be a problem.

Luv my old turn signals with the obnoxious beepers. Never have to worry about leaving them on. Can not wait to get them off!!!
My 2016 Yamaha cart's self cancelling turn signals are silent and I want it that way. I do have bright yellow LED lights on the right and left pillars of my cart so I can visually see which turn signal is activated. Works great when they turn off like magic after I turn the cart.

We have self cancelling on one cart and lights in front of our face blinking on the other cart to remind us to turn them off. When pulling out I always figure people are going straight so I wait.
Waiting is the right thing to do.

Best advice I ever had, was to always use direction signals, but never trust anyone else's.

Thanks for getting me thinking about this. I've seen too many golf cart drivers do strange things lately. Will add this to my checklist of cautions along with using my turn signal in roundabouts so that the unaware/uninformed won't hit me.

Use turn signals correctly, and this wouldn't be a problem.
Agree, but the trouble is that many, if not most, don't. Solution is "don't trust the turn signal indicators". Wait!

I don't have self cancel signals so I keep my hand on the indicator until I complete the turn so I don't forget.
Looking into getting a buzzer.
