Two phone books to the curb this morning...last years and the new monster book.
The larger size format to avoid thickness is ridiculous.
We have not opened a phone book in who knows how many years.
There should be an opt out option that would save a lot of paper and the source of it.

BTW, about phone books.

My wife doesn't go on the internet, so she brought our old phone book down here from Wisconsin,
5 years ago and looks up addresses all the time to send out cards up north.

Back in the day on the farm the Sears catalog and old phone books were valuable commodities. They provided reading entertainment and served a useful purpose afterwards.

Am I the only one who likes these old phone books?

I actually looked up my phone number and my neighbor’s to see if we are listed. The books are a bit of history too. I keep them, my family has been here since the 1990’s. I like to look them up in the old phone books, my relatives have passed, they are only a memory. Now it is my current family. Yes, I have internet, my background once was in computers. But there is a dignity to these books, a tie with tradition, which I like. And I use them to look up people and business too as they are conveniently placed on my kitchen counter.

Perhaps we should drop off unwanted Monster phone books at the mail centers for those that want an extra copy to keep in the car or golf cart. Never can tell when you get to the next phone booth whether it will have a phone book for you to use. (or next rest room)

Received a monster Phone Book today. Probably 50,000 of these distributed. A mile high stack to feed the recycling furnaces.

You inspired me. The new book is 1 7/16 inches thick. I'll accept your 50,000 guess. That makes the stack 71,875 inches high. That is 5990 feet or 1.13 miles. That was an excellent guess.

We like the huge phone book. It's useful and easy to navigate. It shows people who come here from each state. Xontacts ...connections. Stop complaining and go take a bike ride. Bring the phone book for you to sit on in the restaurant.

Interesting. I got a phone book delivered about a month ago that is only 1 1/4 inches thick. It is entitled, "The Villages, Florida Phone Directory" by Data Publishing. Did I get a different book?

Remember how the yellow index pages in the middle of the book were always the first ones gone when that "useful purpose" was being served?

The phone book I got this time is the official Villages phone book. It has The Villages logo on it. It is not one of those copycat phone books like the data publishing phone book. There is some really good and valuable information in the first 33 pages of the phone book and it's worth a look. The rest of it is just a phone book.

I've kept my very first Villages phone book. Wow, things sure have changed since I first got here.

We agree.
These books are a waist of our amenity fees.
Ninety-five percent
of the residents either go online to find people or business or go by word of mouth.
Granted, probably 50% of the production cost is covered by the advertising, but we're paying for the rest.

Do you have any evidence that amenity fees are used to pay for the phone books? I would suspect that the phone book is a profitable endeavor, financed totally by advertisers. Otherwise, why would another company, Data Publishing, also provide a free phone book to Village residents?

Glad it arrived.
I needed to locate a family nearby. Because the home was in a business name, I could not reach them. The phone directory arrived and had them listed and I was finally able to contact them in their "other home". We were all pleased that the directory helped. I can see how many may not have the need for it. In this case it was a useful tool.

Instead of printing 50,000, just print 1,000 and put them at the rec centers for free pickup by those that want them. That should satisfy the full need and will save 49,000 going out in the trash. Oh, put it on-line also.

I do not think that registering on that website will prevent The Villages phone book from being delivered to your house. The only phone books listed on the site as being eligible for opting out are those published by Dex Media. The Daily Sun circulation department told me that they don't know anything about an opt out procedure, and that they publish their own phone books, not Dex Media. Also, you would need to provide the website with personal information that could result in you getting even more unwanted junk mail or other advertising.

There is a lot of information for new people in there. I liked the fact it’s also seperated by state. I can look for a few people that I heard moved here. Just when you throw it out… there’s something you could have found in there.
Why are OLD PEOPLE SO NEGATIVE??

I think it would cost more money to print 1000 because they would need to greatly reduce the advertisement price. The advertisers pay for the phone books.

I really do not understand why I need to accept someone dumping a directory on my driveway … and then why I need to pay for disposal. If I went out and dumped a pound of paper on 50,000 driveways, there would be an uproar and the police would be tracking me down.

I believe that I am receiving 3 different directories per year. Does anyone know who is distributing these? Has anyone found a method to “opt out” of the distribution?

I think they hire people to drop a phone book on every driveway. It would be too expensive to ask them to verify each address and exclude those who opted out.

I live where most of my neighbors retired because the computer world forced them out of their job. They still have landlines and read the newspaper and the phone book.
This is a 55 and older community and as long as we have people living here born before 1964, they are baby boomer and not raised on computer but are hands on people that get together Just to socialize.

They book their tee time by phone and hang out at the driveways to chi chat

They experience free internet living

Love it here

Not all people born before 1964 and living here are baby boomers. There are many of us still alive from the "silent generation."

It has nothing to do with telephone numbers....it is for the company to make money....they sell advertising in the book....to make it attractive to an advertiser they have to show how many books are distributed thus how many people potentially will see your advertisement otherwise know as the cost of the add divided by total number of copies distributed equals cost per person getting the book....reading the book or keeping the book etc makes no difference in calculating that number

Got mine yesterday. The book no longer fits in the end table drawer where I used to keep them every year (and never used it) which is now a reason to get rid of all of them. :) It was dropped (actually thrown) off from a huge pickup truck flying 2 huge politically oriented and outdated flags on the back. No matter what your political persuasion is the DISTRIBUTOR of these books shouldn't allow "political messages" on his employees trucks assuming that wasn't the distributor of course. I've seen that truck circling LSL many times.
