AutoTire Damage

Several days ago while driving in The Villages, I picked up 4 Phillips head screws in one rear tire in about an 8 inch spread and 1 in the other rear tire. All screws identical. One tire a total loss for permanent repair with patch.

Talked to tire repair shop today and he said he had another customer come in with three identical screws in his tire.

Must have been a box or bag of screws in our path.

Cannot blame any area. Was not in any new construction area but path started on Stillwater in Lake Sumter landing, Buena Vista to Brownwood parking area behind MVP. Then Buena Vista to Rte 42 to 441 North to Almost New Furniture. Then 441 south to Morse. Morse south to Colony Plaza parking lot. Noticed pressure PSI warning upon exiting Colony Plaza but it was a slow leak.

Auto hadn't been used in about a week, so likely happened on above described path.

There was a discussion on other social media with 466 and Buena Vista as the nexus for a bunch of flats from screws.

Thank the snow birds for picking up screws for you. Walking the dog we frequently pick up roofing nails and screws in the road. Neighborhood is 20 years old. Told one neighbor he owed me a beer for saving him from getting him a flat tire. Sure enough he had one waiting for me next time we saw him.

I've had more flats since we moved to the villages than in the rest of my life. Bike, golf cart and car. People will argue about most anything. The plugs commonly used are not the best way to patch a tire. When inserted they further damage the tire. More expensive but better is to patch from the inside with the typical old fashioned patch.

Bicycle, I carry a spare tube, far easier than trying to find the hole and patching the tube.
The secret is to find what pierced the tube. Other wise if stuck in the tire it will simply pierce the new tube.

Five screws all in rear tires, sounds like vandalism. If, simply dropped screws, the front tires would go over it first.
