View Full Version : Warning for golf carts on Meggison

Driving north on Meggison, after going under Warm Springs Ave, then under Meggison bridge, the first / next development on the right, which is being developed behind a wall, has an outbound road which has a rather sharp right hand turn and the golf cart crossing will not be visible until the last 50 -75 feet.
This development's exit is very dangerous for golf carts if someone is coming too fast and not paying attention. If the current design stands, I predict that there will be a golf cart accident and death.
please be careful when the development is opened to the public.
good luck. .

Yep. When they put the wall up all the way to the curve creating a blind spot for cars exiting that development I was thinking that was a recipe for disaster. Time will tell.

Suggest you contact District Property Management. I would if I knew the area & details.
Several email addresses on their page. I have contacted them in the past, always with a response. I share your concern.

Hopefully something will be done but after stopping if you can see 50-75 feet you should be able to cross safely.

There will probably be a STOP sign on the MMP, so there should not be a safety problem for the people who obey the signs.

There's already a stop sign on the MMP. The problem lies with the cars exiting that section of St. Johns. They are coming around a corner out from behind a wall. Unless they put in a stop sign for auto traffic prior to them reaching the MMP there is going to be issues.

Yes, I have already had that happen - a contractor in a pick-up had to lock up his brakes to avoid hitting me in the crosswalk - he was coming around the wall way too fast.

"IF" people obey and stop at the sign is HUGE!!! I see people daily sailing through signs and seemingly going their merry way without so much as slowing down. Add to that age with all it brings----lack of good depth perception, being on multiple medications and slowness of action. Follow through with the calls!!

You can stop and look, and still get hit because you can’t see through a wall. The exit for cars is a blind curve. Cars can’t see golf carts until they are around the wall and on top of them. Extremely dangerous.

I agree a very bad design, hopefully they will remove one section of wall. Painting a bunch of yellow lines in roadway does not improve visibility.

I’m willing to bet they all have golf clubs on back of cart? :)

Your warning is appreciated, but will not change a thing as many older people just don't have the ability to sense many dangerous situations. So unless you can alter the aging of the brain accidents will happen no matter how the MMT's are designed. EX: how many carts to you see run stop signs, don't signal and drive around with a radio blasting?

Golf carts should also be aware that there is NO STOP sign for cars exiting Ezell Recreation Center. The cart path that crosses it is a two way STOP for carts only. I happened to be leaving there the other day and if I hadn't slowed down, would have hit a cart that just zipped through without stopping.

Wait, is aging now an acceptable explanation for poor driving?? "I'm sorry officer but I've passed my 65th birthday so I'm expected to drive this way."

Simple Solution - Put up a gate. That's what the Villages claims they are for.

I agree completely, it's a blind curve coming out of the subdivision, and the gate will be on the otherside of the cart path. You can sit there all day long at the stop sign, you cannot see cars coming around the corner until its to late, due to the large wall. Very bad design, people commenting on not stopping have no idea until you drive thru there, and then you will understand. We have had a few people comment on that entrance, very bad design for sure.

...the golf cart crossing will not be visible until the last 50 -75 feet.
30mph is 44 feet per second, so that doesn't give much time to stop, look and safely cross if there's a speeder coming round the curve.

Meggison is/will be another Morris or Bueno Vista. There seem to be some planning issues. It’s kind of “over developed”. There needs to be a gate from the village for sure, but in the long run there needs to be an actual dedication of alternate land and a path for the trip northward.
The road leads all the way from Homestead in Citrus Grove to Brownwood! It kind of falls into that no cart use on Warm Springs to get to Magnolia category. I’m hoping for amelioration some day for all those cart issues.

Agree this is a potentially hazardous intersection. If a car were to come around that corner at speed, a collision with a golf car could likely happen. My solution: Install a SERIOUS speed bump for auto traffic right about where the wall ends. That would slow down all but the most insane drivers. Problem is, the District will probably wait until there is a crash to do anything constructive.

Isn't that area still controlled by the developer or were the roads already turned over to the county or district ?

The county may still have some say in this before the transfer, I would suggest calls or emails to the county to make sure they are aware of the problem. While I have been in the area a few times, I have not been there recently and have not actually observed the situation.

I went by there yesterday. It looks like they may have removed a 1/2 section of wall. If you creeped up to crossing you could just about look back around the corner. Still won't do much good if a car is coming around at any speed. Time will tell.

Yes...That crossing is an accident just waiting to happen for southbounders.
It is just a huge blind with fast car traffic exiting.

This is not a typical situation. By the time you accelerate from a full stop, a car can come around the corner and the golf cart is up the creek. It has almost happened to us a couple of times already by construction workers and they were no speeding.

We don't and have had a couple of close calls already. This is a bad design at best and when you consider the demographics of The Villages, it is a disaster waiting to happen.

Is there a map location? I drive that route to golf quite often and can't visualize the spot that would be dangerous.
On second thought there is a road that curves all the way to the golf cart stop and you can't see cars when you look left going south on Meggison. I think that's the location. I think you have to rely only on car engine noises approaching.

From my observations, every house in TV is behind a gate.
That means a gate will definitely be built.

That’s a big problem with electric vehicles. My brother is legally blind and can’t rely on hearing the dam things coming.

Yes, that is probably the one. You can't hear the engines on cars because of the thickness of the cement wall that is blocking your view. A gate will probably go up there once the section is built out. They have all the foundations poured back there now.

Location: Meggison and Fraser Court.
They are all prefab villas back there, I think.
