Folk's Pay attention on the road and do not text and drive.
A bicycle was hit yesterday around 2;30pm on Buena Vista, going north before El Camino drive, on Buena Vista.
It was obvious the driver was not paying attention to driving.
After she hit the bicyclist she turned left sharply and almost rolled her vehicle, hit the curb blew out the front left tire on her SUV and ended up on the medium and almost went into oncoming traffic that was going south.
This guy was lucky not to be killed!!!!!

Holy smokes! I don’t see any evidence of somebody texting and driving, but whether they did or not, that bicyclist is lucky to be alive.

My understanding is that she admitted it to the cops and she was also ticketed. Thats what a first responders said
, but who knows what the driver was really doing, but it is clear she was not paying attention!

She shouldn't have just gotten a ticket. She should've gotten arrested. Doing something stupid that can get you a ticket is just doing something stupid that can get you a ticket. But once that stupid thing causes harm to someone else, it's an actual crime, not just a traffic violation.

And sounds like more than $950 in damage that can get you arrested in California.

I would feel less at risk being on the road with a bunch of drivers leaving happy hour than a bunch of high schoolers getting out of school and driving with phones in hand.

Nothing says either was a high schooler. Neither texting and driving, or drinking and driving are legal or smart.

I regularly object to the term accident. Most accidents can be avoided. Thus, most accidents are one or several people acting stupidly.

I have a tendency to believe the heresay from posters here, rather than the news media. If a story doesn't fit their narrative then they twist it until it does, or they just don't report it at all.

Look there are many examples on YouTube of people walking and talking on their cell phones and having accidents.

They're funny, but behind the wheel of a car it's downright dangerous and texting is even worst.

Some states have made it illegal to be on the phone while driving.

My car has the ability to accept calls and will also read out loud in coming text and even that can sometimes be distracting.

Wholeheartedly agree.

A meteorite hitting your car is an accident. Your car striking another object, be it a pedestrian, bicyclist, another car, or whatever because your attention was focused somewhere else at the time is NOT.

I was driving south on Buena Vista at around 12:30pm, when a Toyota Tundra truck came up fast on my butt and somehow weaved between me and the car to my left, and floored it. I saw this headline and assumed I would be reading about that idiot. Last I saw it was weaving in and out in heavy traffic, flying up behind cars and slamming on the brakes. It's scary out there, I wouldn't dare ride a bike.

As far as I know, Buena Vista (unlike Morse Blvd) has an available multimode trail available to bicyclists its entire length. I ride almost daily, and can't imagine why anyone would want to risk life and limb by driving on the road there. The speed limit is merely a recommendation, as it isn't enforced with any regularity. No excuse for the idiot driver, but c'mon riders - why put yourself at such a risk?

With technology today you can do this without even looking at your phone. I drove home from Ocala last weekend, had an entire convo via text and didn't look at or touch my phone once. It's all done through a button on my steering wheel and via voice on either Android Auto or Apple Car Play.

The cyclist was very lucky! Drivers do not realize it only takes a second to look at the phone for something ro happen. And being 'older', it takes longer than a second to look at their phones. I had my phone set up before to read the texts to me however I rather turn my phone off while driving.

Voice to text/text to voice works just as stated. All my calls, texts, emails are voice from my navigation screen. My radio announces income call, text, email, do I want to listen. It’s a yes no response.

I can ask For driving directions, respond to any text or send new, just by using voice command. Many states have laws against physically picking up a phone. My phone when I am in my car can only be answered using voice commands. It’s been over 6 years that my cars have had that ability. Even when I am home It’s faster to voice text on my phone. All of my contacts are available by just saying a name, then text, or email. As I said it a generation thing

I can also ask when is the next gas station, and price, or a hotel on my route.

Seriously? Bikes have the same rights on the road as cars. I have never seen or even heard of a bike cutting off a car. More likely is that ignorant drivers don’t know the have to yield to the bike in front of them. Always. I had a driver honk and curse me for being in the road legally turning left with signaling when they came roaring up behind me from over a block away. I was stopped to allow the oncoming golf cart to pass before turning onto my street. I clearly had the right of way. Such ignorance

Inattentive and ignorant bikers exist too; natural selection keeps the number low but they do exist.

Since you say you have never heard of a bike cutting off a car, here's an example for you. A young cousin and his friend played a "game" where they would cut off cars in order to hear them lock up their brakes. The friend played it one time too many and is no longer around. Stupid and certainly not typical but it does happen.

If you have read these threads long enough you will have seen examples of bicycles not stopping at stop signs and not yielding to vehicles already in the circles. Stupid and not common but it does happen.

This case probably was due to an inattentive driver, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility that the bicyclist was at fault.

Does your experience mean no one else has ever seen that happen ? Amazing how some people manage to speak for EVERYONE. Do you have special abilities to see through everyone's eyes? Evidently not through mine because you most definitely were not walking down O'Dell Circle near Mallory CC a few weeks ago around 9AM when the clever biker made a fast left turn from the diamond land onto Mt Croghan and obviously didn't see the car 2 or 3 lengths behind and to the left of him. Obviously you are a biker who never makes mistakes but he wasn't. Yea, seriously. :1rotfl:

You are retired, guessing in late 70s or 80s? Those from driving age to early 60s, are spending more time in cars, than in office. I love my voice text, on a long day I can change the voice to accent, make or female. When you spend 8 plus hours a day in a car, life is very different.
Texting is a way of life for younger gens, not so much for older clientele.

What is “safe?” Is safe driving a car on I 75 with 80,000 pound trucks? Is safe gaining weight every year and never exercising? Is safe having a heart attack or a stroke because you don’t care for yourself as well as you do your dog? Close to a million people die a year from overeating and lack of exercise. These are the real killers. These are the real risky things people do everyday. It’s just not that noticeable. These people sit back, enjoy overeating, over drinking, and never exercising and they never wake up to the fact that they are slowly killing themselves. It’s time to accept the fact that many Villagers want to live a healthier lifestyle. You see them everyday. They are out riding their bicycles, jogging, walking, playing pickle ball, swimming, etc. This is a retirement community. Slow down when driving a car or golf cart. Yes, bicyclists, walkers, and joggers slow you down. Isn’t that good? Isn’t that why you retired? Courtesy all around would be nice this Holiday season and into the New Year. I don't know why you are lecturing me. I never said anything negative about bicyclists. I occasionally ride a bicycle and understand the problems. My statement was to the poster who said it should be safe for cyclists on the road. Yes, it should be safe for them but reality is there are aggressive and unobservant drivers and there isn't anything anyone can do about it. Ride defensively paying attention to your surroundings.

Sorry if you thought I was lecturing you. I just replied to your post because it concerned your thought that it wasn’t safe for bicyclists to be on the roads with cars. I was just looking to reply to that concept and I picked your post at random. I should have just posted without a reply quote. I must say, though, that I feel safe riding out there. Like you say though, I do ride defensively and I try to be very aware of my surroundings. I have been riding on the roads since I was ten years old. My father used to ride his bike on the roads in the 1920’s. Many cyclists here in The Villages have also been riding for years and have ridden thousands of miles on roads throughout the United States and all over the world. We know we have to careful out there and that a collision with a car would be bad, but you must understand we love to ride. We can’t wait to get back on our bikes each day. It invigorates us and keeps us healthy. The Villages has been named one of the best bike places in America and I agree it is a wonderful area in which to ride.

A person should be able to walk on any street in any city in the U.S. without the fear of being mugged, raped or beaten to death, but in the real world that ain't happening. Just like it ain't gonna happen that a bicyclist will be safe riding on the road with motor vehicles.

We don't (shouldn't) give our streets over to the criminals, we arrest and prosecute them and if necessary take them off the streets - do enough of that and the problem goes away. We shouldn't just accept that the streets are unsafe for bicyclists due to inattentive drivers, we should ticket them fine them and if necessary take away their driving privileges.

The world ain't perfect but shrugging our shoulders at the problems will only make it worse.

“Anyone…”? LOL!

So you really believe most people who live here have the same negative attitude that you do?!?

Dream on.

What in Gods name does a observation have to do with negativity. Do you live in a bubble, the drivers in the villages is a Chit show and bikers are not safe on the road! But you interpret it as negativity, go gaslight someone else!

There an easy fix. Don’t answer phone while driving.
