View Full Version : First for me - stolen reservations

Made reservations at country club for seven people at 6:30. Thought it would be good to show up a little early - arrived at 6:20. Went to check in and was told we were already seated. News to me!
Hostess looked at a couple sitting at a table set for seven. We looked at the couple sitting at a table set for seven but didn't recognize them as part of our family. They looked everywhere except back at us.
Figure the odds that someone with the same name as me made reservations at the same time and at the same restaurant and for the same number of people that I did.
The country club did an exceptional job finding us a table and we had a perfectly fine experience so no complaint there. Not feeling quite so good about the people who stole my reservation though - I hope they had a miserable time.

Would seem that the error was the staff at the country club. If you had reservations, they don't call you, thus no one would know that there was a reservation. And since they had no problem seating you, there would be no reason for someone to steal your reservation.
Thus, I hope the couple had a wonderful time.

I say the staff should have approached them and have them give up the table.

LOL……not sure that I’d wish them a miserable time but if they knowingly grabbed someone else’s reservations, that’s pretty low class.

Had the same thing happen to us at Sarabeths in New York a couple of years ago. They were extremely busy. The manager went to 'our' reserved table and immendiately escorted the couple out of the restaurant. Our table was ready in about 5 minutes. I appreciated the way Sarabeths handled the situtation!

I going to assume it was a mistake on the part of the hostess. The group came in, announced that there were 7 people and the hostess assumed it was the reservation. An honest mistake and you were seated with little delay.

Happened to us at Cody's Sumter Landing a few years ago. I booked a table for 12 for lunch. A large group showed up before us and the hostess said "Are you Nancy?" and they said yes and were seated. The got another table for us and sat us next to them in the front room.

Teachable moment for the hostess if therein lies the fault. Low brow if it was deception on the part of the other diner(s).
One thing I have a tough time tolerating is when people try to take advantage of others, especially by forcing their way in, cutting in line, taking someone's reservation, etc.
Similar thing happened at a doctor's office waiting room. About 6 people in the room. All had signed in. In a few moments the assistant opened the door and called out: "James Wentworth" (Don't remember the real name but it was not "Smith"). Two guys got up and walked to the door. They were both patients and both named, James Wentworth.

More of a coincidence than stealing a reservation.
I’m sure your dining experience was a miserable experience not theirs.

Probably right, just a coincidence. I mentioned that in my post.
And no, our experience was fine. I mentioned that in my post as well.

My husband and I were in Italy and needed a car to take us to the train station only a mile away. The hotel said wait outside and someone would be there shortly...we did and there was a black Lamborghini waiting...the driver came over - took our bags and away we went. Got to the train station and tried to pay this well dressed chauffeur and he said it was already paid. We tried again (since there was a communication issue) and again, he said no. Wondering if it was part of our hotel stay, we got out and only LATER did I think, maybe we got the wrong car...Was there someone else waiting for a top notch ride? Thank goodness our ride was really short. He would have had time to go back and get the correct people.

that's exactly why doctors offices ask for your date of birth. Maybe, restaurant reservations desks should ask the same question?

I actually considered something like this but was talked out of it. The bottle of wine would have been a nice touch and I wish I had thought about that.

The hostess should have asked the couple if their party had arrived. The couple knew very well what they were doing.

Is your last name Smith?
Boomer
12-20-2021, 09:16 AM
If you have a common name, you might want to use a different one. Mr. Boomer and I have very common first and last names. And there sure are an awful lot of Boomers, especially in TV.
Remember the old days when restaurants called your name over a speaker when your table was ready. . .
Well, I used to tell the hostess our name was Donner and wait to hear the loud announcement, “The Donner Party, your table is ready.”
Easily amused Boomer :)

List three of the "lot of assumptions" and I will back up one of them.

I have used "Schlobotnick" as the name. . . of course, no one can spell it. . . . which is a made up name.
If you look at some names for people selling golf carts on Facebook, they have made up names. . .
loved the use of Donner for the last name. . .:1rotfl:

Nope, things might have not gone well. The party that made the reservation got a seat, let sleeping dogs lie.
