Can’t remember for me but as a teacher my grade 3 class bought stocks Lego, or some toy company and we watched it. Great lessons in math and the kids loved it.

Berkshire Hathaway at 21 years old. Wish I bought more, but at that age the most important thing to me was to scrap up every penny I could get my hands on to fund the annual ski trip to Jackson Hole.

Chubb & Son Insurance - 22 yrs old - employee stock option offering - payroll deduction for the cost of $35/35 shares! Left the company 6 yrs later.
Thinking I might never qualify for a pension - I never touched the stock thru good times, bad times, splits, etc. Today own 1,300 shares trading at $194 today! Will likely sell it when I want to move into the graduated assisted living concept. No reason to sll now - the qtrly dividend is super!

Sigma Instruments - about 20 years old around 1969 or so. Do not recall what I bought or sold it for. It is no longer in existence. At the time there were over 1000 employees, and we were the world's largest manufacturer of street light controls. All the company's photocells were part of my responsibility.

Bought Earth Resources in 1975 @ $14. Saw it go up to $19 within in a few weeks and then it dropped to $11. About a year later it rallied to $14 and I sold it. Woohoo - I broke even! After that I invested in larger companies.

About 1984, I had a discussion with a friend who recommended 2 stocks from his research. I was going to go with one or the other. One was Mattel, the toymaker who was about to get into some new ventures, so I bought $1000 worth @ $.75 a share. 2 years later I sold it for $100 less commission. The one I did not choose was a small startup company called Netflix. Life is full of choices...

The first stock actually owned was EF McDonald which was a trading stamp company where you get stamps at the supermarket and trade them for products as you feel their books. I remember it was three shares and worth $50. It went into bankruptcy if you years later but just getting the stocks hiked my interest and if you ever want to lose money just wait till I start going into the stock market cuz that's what happens I pick the worst times. However during the first internet bubble I bought Apple for my daughter and it doubled to $22 and I sold it of course then I will be worth a lots more if she kept it and she's hated me ever since for that decision

I spent my last few months in Vietnam in a staff job and used my free franking to send for annual reports on every company I could find an address for. Meanwhile my savings were in the 10% pot the government gave us while in the war zone.
I finally selected stocks
Roan Selection Trust, paying a very nice high dividend
RCA, major TV manufacturer
Superscope, sole importer of Sony products
On arrival back in the states I went to retrieve my pile of money, which was about $4000 as I recall, and was told I had to wait 3 months. I was upset. After all that heavy planning and research. But during that 3 months RCA got out of the TV business and the stock tanked, Sony told Superscope that it would henceforth market its own products in the USA, and Roan Selection Trust was taken over by the Zambian government.
I trudged over to my local savings and loan and put the money in CDs. Later CDs would be a great investment during the Carter Administration.
When I got out of the Army I put all I could afford into 401k funds. Now my nest egg is in ETFs.
There are lessons there

In 1987 I bought 10,000 shares of a home shopping penny stock at $.035 per share. Years later I saw a similarly named stock selling for $100 per share and I thought I was a millionaire. NOT. Mine went bankrupt. I had the right idea. Just picked the wrong one.

IBM, RCA, and GE at age 30 or so. Just sold the IBM this year, sold GE several years ago when it tanked. GE bought RCA decades ago, so that's gone, too.

Starting buying stocks at about age 50. At 1st, bought the main names - GE, MSFT, MOT, etc. The 1st big risk / reward stock was ImClone. Early on, it went up, then dropped precipitously. I followed it down and then it turned around and was a big winner for me. I became more like W. Buffet and tended to buy and HOLD for long periods. I made a big mistake and sold Apple after a big gain, but, looking back, I should have HELD. Buffet currently has Apple as a LT HOLD.

The biggest mistake i ever made was not to buy Apple in 1988. But we had just bought our first house, had a toddler and I was still building my practice... Every dime I had, I plowed back into the business... Ahhh, hindsight...

I bought pennystock (I do not remember the name), it was part of a pump and dump scheme, I lost, a few years later I saw the entity I purchased from was finally caught and charged. I lost $1000, gained a lifetime lesson, and saw the perpetrators brought to justice.

I lived much of my life outside USA in very volatile situations , I pretty much lived in the moment , because I never thought I would get to retirement some times, so waking up with my ears still ringing from a car bomb going off 2 days before in Pakistan at 60 I said that’s enough I’m retiring ,my sister then turned me on to vanguard index funds , dollar cost averaging,I’ve had 5 funds for 23 years now and they are just sooooo boring and made me soooooo much money lol
