Short term couple moved in till April. They place lawn chairs and water bottles in the actual street (permenantly). They have a patio and a large side yard already. Found out the renter needs a lawn chair on the street to smoke cigarettes.
We have contacted the owners listed on the Villages rentals that we finally found. Thanks.
Owner must have contacted "street sitting tenants" because the chairs are gone.

Short term couple moved in till April. They place lawn chairs and water bottles on the street permanently to get sun even though they have a patio and a large side yard. We are at the end of the street. Aren't there restrictions in place by Sumter Co.?
I dont believe there are any restrictions on actually being able to use your yard for sitting or drinking.

When you say "on the street permanently" , do you mean actually placing chairs in the street and on the asphalt? Or do you mean placing chairs in the yard next to the street. Makes a lot of difference.

Drive your car up if they are blocking the street and honk…loudly and constantly. If they are not blocking the street then I’d let it go.
I have to tell you a different story. We have renters next door. They were out on the lanai with guests perhaps 4 guys playing cards telling jokes, laughing quietly etc. An anole climbed up my lanai screen - something I disapprove of because when we open the screen they sometimes come in, can’t find their way out and then they die. In order to prevent this, I went up to the screen and said “shoo”, as anoles can hear. The anole did leave but I noticed, the laughter next door stopped. Then the guys left. I realized they must have thought I had said, “Shhh”. Some renters are so considerate!

Seems like they are law abiding people honoring their rental contract. Problem will be solved when the snow plow driver runs over the chairs.

You cannot reason with some people. You cannot reason with lizards either. Confession when we first moved in we had an areol on our lanai. I did not want it to be killed so I put out water for it. The reality, they come and go at their leisure under the door jamb.
There is no shortage of inconsiderate people everywhere-including the villages.

if all the neighbors are up in arms about this, you could all get together and park your cars in front of the house that they're renting...which would force them to sit in the middle of the road....then keep score as you play "dodge ball"
hitting an empty chair - 2 points
causing someone to jump out of the way - 3 points
getting the finger for a near miss (counting coup) - 1 point
being sworn at - 1/2 point
hitting anyone - minus 6 points
backing up after hitting someone - minus 8 points on top of the minus 6
game usually ends when someone scores 21
Good luck

Unfortunately, it will be a long month (hopefully, that is all) - your best recourse is to have t you and your neighbors know what terrible tenants they were - TAKE PICTURES of them on the street smoking, take pictures of the chairs on the street (WITH THEIR HOUSE IN THE BACKGROUND).

An old expression. I believe it was actually done. Imagine HOT TAR poured on your bare body. Would be like hot melt glue all over your body. Then, assuming your survive, you would need to remove it from your burnt skin.

If these chairs are blocking traffic, then call Community Watch. If they can't take care of it, then call the NON-emergency police department phone number.
If the chairs aren't blocking traffic, then eh - who cares really. Some drunk neighbor in a golf cart will likely run over the empty chairs eventually anyway.

So how does 2 chairs in the street effect you waking up in the morning and enjoying the day. Can you still get in and out of your driveway? I do not see the issue and the owner will be happy that the smoke is not getting into the house.

Hopefully you do not live downwind and that their cigarette smoke is not drifting into your yard and home and disrupting your peaceful enjoyment of your property. That would be awful.
It seems to me if the street is a public thoroughfare their placing and leaving lawn chairs on it might break some law or laws. If it is a private road the situation might be otherwise. I do not know much about the situation with Patio Villa streets .
In any case good luck! Try to be happy they will be renting for only a few months.

You are right about how easy it can be to create a mob. Also, being tarred and feathered was never fun. But was the tar hot? Sometimes, but generally not. Tar that remained liquid at room temperature found a number of uses in the past, such as on boat decks, on ropes, as waterproofing, and even as lubrication for squeaky wooden covered wagon axles. The kind that we use on roofs that has to be heated in order to flow wouldn’t work for these uses. Liquid tar was black from the soot in it, stuck to skin and stained it, and was hard to remove. Feathers stuck to it, too. The Wikipedia article on the topic is an interesting read. I was disgusted to read that before the American Revolution, some “patriots” considered it a suitable punishment for Loyalists trying to follow the laws. Tarring and feathering - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarring_and_feathering)
The tar used was Pine Tar, made by distilling it from fresh pine wood with heat. When you see reference to “naval stores” as being an important product of a colony, that was part of it. Thousands of barrels of it were produced in America, Sweden, etc. it differs from the petroleum tar used on flat roofs. Tar - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar#Wood_tar)

Some neighborhoods do not like renters.. I have a friend who rents, by the year, and when the neighbors find out they are not owners they treat them as if they are terrible people. If you are an owner or renter, you still pay to live there and should not be treated differently. Actually in winter season, renters pay more in rent that some owners pay in a mortgage. Some people just think they are better than others and that is a shame. We are all Gods children and need to repect others.

Another personal anecdote, up north we have a shared driveway with 6 neighbors. Last summer one neighbor had two male renters in their twenties who put their lawn chairs near the back of the driveway to sun themselves. I can’t figure out why because they had a huge back lawn, a front yard and a back yard available to them. The neighbor who has his garage closest to the back has to back out onto the driveway. He is from down under and a senior but with a bit of attitude. He tends to bomb out of his garage and bomb down the driveway at break neck speed. You’d expect different from someone his age…anyways. One day he bombed out of his garage as usual nearly hitting the chairs but not quite. After that the 2 guys set up the chairs in the yard.

Exactly what I was gong to say. It's rude to do something like this when you are basically a guest in The Villages (short term renter). Some people are just uncouth and inconsiderate.
But what's even worse are those on here defending them. I've noticed a lot of posters here always wants to appear "cool" for fear of being labeled as some cranky old, get-off-my-lawn type (or in this instance, out of the street).

If you rent through The Villages Hometown Agency you are not allowed to smoke anywhere on the property, inside or out. So, they have no choice but to either smoke on the street, get permission to stand or sit in someone else's yard that is not under hometown's thumb, or quit smoking. I'm not saying that they should have chairs on the street but being on the street is where they have to be. I compare issues like this to having a neighbor that leaves their dog on the lanai barking all day while they are at work. My choice would be a couple months of people smoking and sitting in the street. Some might say I'm defending the actions of the tenants but that is not the case, it's just factual if they are renting through an agency that doesn't allow smoking anywhere on the property.

Well they could walk like the rest of us, on the street. And then they could smoke while walking. That’s what hubby did when he used to smoke.

I am sure they are making a statement but if they can’t smoke on the property they are at least following the rental agreement.

This would be a good plot for Larry David's “Curb Your Enthusiasm” show if it's wasn't so ridiculous.

If you don't like it, why don't you just move back up north? Problem solved.
Typical Moaners.

Name calling already. Is that a typo or does it really say Nov 21, Posts: 2 ?

While it may look less than polished having lawn chairs out in the gutter area, at least the tenants are rule-followers. They could easily have just smoked in the back yard and none been the wiser, but they made an agreement (rental contract) and they are abiding by it. Just be glad it is a temporary condition. Another couple weeks and this entire thread will be moot.

their lease probably states that they are not permitted to smoke on the property. That would also cover their driveway, patio, and lanai. This is the way that I make sense from their behaviour.

I do not get why there is a problem.
I would mind if there were lawn chairs in the street, even if they are at the end of the block and not blocking traffic. What does that say about the neighborhood? It looks tacky. The Villages is not about tackiness, at least in the village I live in. That is why we live here.

So, the situation was resolved. Looks like a lot of commenters did not read the last line. I'm not sure of the purpose of starting this thread.
So glad the chairs are gone. Thank you for pointing this out.
