There was an article in yesterday's Daily Sun about the growing feral hog population in Florida, resulting in property destruction and spreading of many diseases. The Florida Water Management District conducts regular hunts to help control the population, but it sounds like it's not enough. Hunters are required to purchase a $75 permit in order to legally hunt these hogs. Plus, if you employ a hunting service, that is an additional cost. If the problem is so great, why not offer a bounty for killed hogs? They do it for pythons. Just another bureaucracy not thinking clearly!

That’s a great idea, it used to work on the seals in New England. If the law was only wild caught could be sold for food, might help reduce numbers of feral hogs and snakes and other invasive species. Heavy fines plus jail time for those breeding them in captivity. Exotic foods can be great. Put them on the menu until they are wiped out.

There are no PERFECT answers. "Legally hunt these hogs." Sooner or later we will read someone injured. A wild hog is actually a dangerous animal. There is a,"sport," of hunting them with pistols. Poison? Sooner or later someone's dog, pet camel? will eat it.

Swamp people? Like so many reality TV shows they make far more for the videos than for alligators. So many such shows. Antique road show. Yup we only drove 3,000 mile to buy this item for $1,000 and I'll bet we can get $1300 for it. That will pay our mortgage, staff of four plus. Pawn stars-no I will pay you more than you are asking. My expert-he is not only waiting for me to call but he gladly works for free.

Driving back from picking up someone at MCO at night 5 years ago I saw about 20 of them of all sizes in the road and on the median on Buena Vista north of Brownwood. Some of them were huge and they were digging around. At first I thought it was a pack of dogs or something but nope wild pigs. Have seen one since.

My neighbors in Georgia hunted wild hogs on their ATV's using either rifles or combination bows and arrows. They were quite successful and shared their really good sausage with us.

My friend, who bought in January 2018, was an early resident of Fenney. She said seeing feral hog packs wandering around was not uncommon at that time.

What about the laws in Florida governing hog hunting on non-privately - owned (state, federal) lands? I've been under the impression that hunting feral hogs on those lands is not only permitted, but encouraged.

I've been looking into hog hunting. No charge for hunting license. I've never seen a charge for a permit. WMA's require a permit to manage the number of hunters in the field at a time. The random WMA's I researched don't charge for the permit. I'm going to look into this further, as I plan on harvesting some fresh pork!

Here in FL, alligator hunting used to be very profitable. Now the state is becoming overrun with gators because they approved so many gator farms; rendering the hunting for alligator meat and skins much less worthwhile.

My home is located near the 6th hole of the Churchill Green Golf Course, and a couple of years ago, feral hogs did $2,400 damage to my lawn. A portion of the Churchill Green Golf Course borders on farmland. At that time, I did research on the hunting of feral pigs in Florida. On private property, they can be hunted at any time, and no license is required. For example, a farmer can kill a feral hog on his land at any time. On state-owned land, there is a specific season when they can be hunted.

First, in Florida 65 and older Floridians do not need a hunting license. Your driver’s license is your hunting license if you are a Florida resident. Second, these hogs are an invasive species. They will tear up lawns, physically threaten people and animals. They can be very aggressive. They defecate in streams and have been responsible for E. coli outbreaks due to contaminated produce. They breed quickly. There is no good reason to keep them alive. They are not cute! In our home state of Texas we have open season all year round. They are even hunted from helicopters. Texas homeowners are begging for hunters to take out packs in their neighborhood since they are so destructive. Unlike deer the meat can be harvested, but it must be done quickly on site. Meat can be donated in Texas.

Hogs will eat anything that holds still long enough, even each other.

Most of these hogs have disease bacteria and viruses in them used to be we could eat them but not anymore.
