Dry Begging

A term not used often is "Dry Begging". It refers to indirect requests for something. I first heard it as a tour guide was talking about the wonderful weather he had arranged on the trip and how we should appreciate that in any gratuity. A fellow tourist mentioned it was good "dry begging" until he brought up the gratuity.

Since then, we find it interesting, during casual conversations when the topic of money concerns suddenly come up.

Interested if others are aware of this term and its use. Examples that are humorous that could be shared might be interesting.

My experience with "dry begging" was in Playa del Carmen a few years back. We were staying at a timeshare that belonged to a friend and decided to take a day trip to someplace or other. During our orientation it was made plain that a lot of service providers depended on tips. Anyway, we got on the bus, and in a very prominent place up front there was a jar marked "tips" with a $5 bill stuck conspicuously in it.

Twice we have been to an automated car wash in SC, and the wash didn't activate after accepting my credit card. And both times the attendant came out, apologized and activated the wash and stated "this one is on me", like he was doing us a favor. The first time I thought it was legit, but after the second time I think it was a ploy to get a tip for a "free" car wash. And yes, both times the charge showed up on our credit card, and no I didn't give a tip.

Sounds like a kind of emotional blackmail. Tip jars, on the counter where everyone can see if you gave or not designed to intimidate through the possibility of being embarrassed if you don't pony up with a tip.

The ones that get me are the places where you stand in line to place your order, fill your own drinks at the soda machine, wait for your number to be called so that you can get your tray of food and find a table and then you bus your own table, toss your trash in the recycling or garbage can, put your silverware in the proper tray and stack your serving tray and any dishes appropriately. Yet, there is a tip jar located at the registers???
