Anyone with a Samsung refrigerator that is out of warranty and that is having trouble with their icemaker, do not call for and pay for parts and repair. There is a pending class action lawsuit against Samsung. Call Samsung at 800 726 7864 or 866 427 7074. Have your model and serial numbers available (located on inside door frame). They have a contract with Asurian. They will fix it for free. Ours was just fixed and is working great. Good luck!

Not defending Samsung. We too have an ice maker in the door. Our refrigerator is a whirlpool and our ice maker also failed after 5 or so years. In terms of failure rates the ice maker seems to be the most problem prone. If, I recall the complete assembly with install was between 150 and $200.
Like most things they don't make them like they used to. My sister still has a WORKING GE refrigerator, an antique, with the motor on top. The date on the motor is 1936.

Thanks for this information. I've been agonizing over this ice maker for 7 years. Already replaced two of them with the faulty parts. I knew about the fix with the new part but have been keeping my eye on the progress of the law suit. Hopefully, this will be the final solution and we won't have to buy bags of ice again. I have an appointment set up.

We had one back home and have one here and just waiting for it to happen. I think the problem is just design, not a good place to put an ice maker. When you leave the door open to put groceries away I think it melts a little and then freezes again, and repeats....

I mentioned that we had our ice maker replaced in our Whirlpool. It seems to be a common repair issue. The guy that replaced ours said they improved the part.
It is now the part they used years ago-that lasted.
Engineers there are tons of such stories. It looks good on paper. We can save money doing it this way. Failures of stuff that looks good on paper includes buildings, bridges etc. An ice maker is just a minor nuisance. Our installed new old design part has been working fine.

I fixed mine myself. Wasn't worth fighting with them. Cost me $200 and it has worked flawlessly for over almost 2 years. There is a "Samsung upgrade kit" from one of the online parts dealers (PartsDR) plus you need to buy some special calking which I got off eBay for 1/2 the usual price . The upgrade kit included a new computer board programmed to modify the defrost cycle and about 4 other "upgraded" parts. The Samsung techs (just some local yokels from around here) they send out don't have a clue. They replace (wrong) parts and it never gets fixed. If you want to fight with them and get aggravated for months you might get a refund. I was on that Facebook group dealing with the issue and any time I posted a suggestion on how to fix it or what to tell the useless technician they deleted the post. I think I still have some of their expensive calking in a drawer if needed but without replacing all the upgraded parts the problem will happen over and over. Bottom line after almost 3 years of aggravation I fixed it myself and it's been perfect for 2+ years.

Ditto..AND ... The defroster ices up to a point where the fan gets stuck on ice and the defrost drain freezes so the water leaks back into the refrigerator and air leaks into the lower ice box turning it into a block of ice and the lower draw gets stuck and the crisper tray falls apart.

I have an Avanti Wine Chiller (Model # WC 3406) that needs repair. I set the thermostat at a certain temperature. The actual temperature is much lower. I reviewed the Owner's Manual-- the Troubleshooting section does not address this type of problem. The thermostat may be defective-- I am not sure. In any case-- I need help fixing this problem. I too had issues with the upper ice maker in my Samsung refrigerator. The second time the unit failed, I solved the problem by selling the house and moving elsewhere in TV!!

Temporary fix I have been doing to my 4 yo Sammy as posted in last months ice maker post….usually lasts a few months …..take ice cube holder out (if you can) and put in 2 coffee mugs with steaming hot water inside ice maker for 15 minutes- repeat if necessary- you don’t have to leave doors open or defrost whole fudge…works to clear all stuck ice!!!
Be careful with the hot boiling water when you put mugs in fridge….

I use a hair dryer to melt the ice inside the icemaker.
Put exterior silicone caulk along the bottom of the ice cube tray box to seal the gap.
Works better but still needs ice thawed out about every 3 months

See attached file of a Samsung Refrigerator Service Bulletin. I followed the instructions and serviced my refrig. Corning silicone is expensive, other parts are inexpensive. I used a steamer to defrost the ice maker. Never had any additional issues.

Several years ago I bought an Electrolux refrigerator with an ice maker problem. They had to replace the refrigerator not once but twice. I think these companies are way over engineering these ice makers.

This kit FOR SAMSUCKS ONLY (there are different kits for many Samsucks modela so check first) DA82-02642A - Samsung Ice Maker Service Kit | Parts Dr (https://partsdr.com/part/da82-02642a-ice-maker-service-kit) PLUS a tube of Dow Corning 3140 RTV (get it off eBay it's expensive ) will fix your Samsung ice cube dispensers if you are willing to spend about $200 and DIY.
Here's a video how-to: DA82-02642A - Samsung Ice Maker Service Kit | Parts Dr (https://partsdr.com/part/da82-02642a-ice-maker-service-kit) Note that this video does NOT show the DOW 3140 sealant but it is a must to complete the job. It gets applies all around the outside of the icemaker where it meets the inside of the fridge. Test the seal by shining a bright light outside the icemaker and make sure there is no light leakage inside the removed ice maker holder. Do it first BEFORE applying the sealant so you will see where all the warm air from the fridge is leaking in to the ice section. JUST SEALING will not fix it. You need the new controller board to adjust the defrost cycle plus the other parts that have been updated.

I called them, they sent a repairman. he replaced the ice maker completely NO CHARGE our friend had the same problem out of warranty i gave them the number and same thing repairman came and replaced the complete ice maker unit FREE

I got sick of mine freezing up all the time. I used a hair dryer with long nozzle to reach as far back as possible to melt the ice. It worked for a few months at a time but got sick of the problem. We bought LG and love it.

We had the same experience, had our Samsung ice maker serviced, at no charge, last February and haven't had an issues since.
Has anyone had problems with the 'pantry drawer' freezing up in the Samsung refrigerator? At the same time we had the ice maker serviced we also had the 'pantry drawer' serviced and still have issues. Behind the 'pantry drawer' is a drain that leaks and we end up with water and sheets of ice under the drawer. When the drawer gets difficult to open we know it's time to remove the drawer, chop the ice and dry up the water. This happens every few weeks.

[I just called the number and there’s so much BS to go through, as I explained what was happening to my icemaker, it said it was out of warranty and there were no service people in our area anyway.

Now yours is an interesting post because at 11:18 this morning I made a call to the 800# and after a 21 minute call it was left that UBreakIFix will call me in the next 24-48 hours for a free fix. If they don't call me I am to call them. My Samsung is right at 8 years old and we replaced the icemaker 3 or 4 years ago because of the above mentioned problems which recurred shortly after the replacement. Time will tell if it actually happens but I have a reasonable degree of optimism. I called them today only because of the OP's original post so a big Thank You to the OP.

Our old fridge was about 2 years old. Still under warranty. After they declared it unrepairable, we got a gift card to Best Buy for the full price, but this was early in the COVID years and there was limited available inventory. We ended up having to get another Samsung, or else wait 3-6 months for something else to come in.
Never getting another Samsung.

All appliances are the same, lucky to get 7 years out of them. LG French Door fridge lasted 4 years. Did research, Miele is the only one I found that claims to give consumers 20 years use. Convenience out weighs price for me.

We have a Maytag and the ice maker motor broke down last year, which makes it 9 years. They don't last as long as they used to. :(

Is your frig ice maker freeing up and have to be defrosted about every 2 weeks and if this what you got fixed, what did they do? The last time I called (in warranty) they told me forget it, they are not going to replace the frig. So, I get the hair dryer out when there are no cubs in the top door ice maker, spend 30 minutes setting everything up and de-icing the whole unit, and then mopping up the water.

My sister has had her entire fridge replaced four times. (extended warranty with Best Buy). The latest she was told to do......purchase some sort of blower that blows warm air (sounds like a hair dryer to me) and use the blower for ten minutes on the ice maker and do this monthly. What????????????? They must be kidding! I would never do that. I would sell the fridge but sis won't do it because she would never be able to match the special black color of all her kitchen appliances that are all Samsung. What a pickle.

They may show up (50/50) but you will be calling Samsucks again every ???? months with the same complaint after they are done. Could be a month or could be 8 months (probably will get bad again in the humid hot summer). The likelihood they (the 3rd party repair folks) will fix it PROPERLY is about 1 in 1000. It will work fine for a while then you'll have to rinse and repeat with Samsucks.

I always get a little chuckle out of these posts about appliances. Everyone seems so intent on replacing the original GE products as soon as possible when purchasing or building a home. At least GE was the brand used when our home was built in 2001.
Our condo in St Pete, for 17 years, came with all GE brand appliances and when we left there in 2001, the same appliances were still in working order with no problems.
Our appliances in The Villages home are GE, installed in 2001, all original, in good working order with never a service call. And I will add here, I would never replace my washing machine with the agitator with the newer machines that don't have it....... my daughter has the newer one, takes forever to wash and clothes don't appear as clean as with the "old" agitator type".
Just my humble take on the subject....

I did the same. They will mail the parts to me first then UBreakIFix comes out to install. I don't have much confidence in this. I plan on studying all the material and video on this thread. I may just cancel the installer and try to get a new fridge.

I may just cancel the installer and try to get a new fridge. DON'T CANCEL. You need to document multiple visits before they even put you through the months of hell to get a replacement. Would be curious to know what parts they send you. If the fridge is over 4 years and if they DON'T include AT LEAST a new circuit board and a tube of Sealant you may as well make an appointment for later in the year now. :) Before they seal the icecube maker "box" the fridge must be full room temp and fully dry.

After retiring, I worked at a store that sold appliances. Anyone that was looking at a Samsung appliance was warned away from buying it because of their extremely high failure rate.

IF they don't include the sealant AND the new circuit board (among 5 or 6 other updated parts) and they do the "repair" PREPARE TO CALL THEM BACK IN A FEW MONTHS when the same problem happens again. DO NOT CANCEL the appointment if you seriously want to fight them for 6 months to MAYBE (not) get a replacement. You'll need multiple appointments and lots of patience. If you have the time and patience for that, great. For me I gave up after 4-5 months and invested the $200 and fixed it myself and it has been flawless for almost 2 years. While I shouldn't have had to do that, for my time and sanity was worth it. As for the class action lawsuit, good luck. You'll be lucky to get a 10% off coupon for a new Samsucks fridge about 10 years from now when/if it gets settled.
This entire thread is based on Samsucks icemakers that are located in the fridge section MOSTLY on the French Door models which is what the OP is about although by now you'd never know it. The topic has already gone way off course which isn't surprising so it will really get confusing because it has nothing to do with the GE stuff The Villages supplies. Everything else looks great (just make sure he installs it all and seals it). I guess it is possible your model year has the updated board. Mine was manufactured in May 2017 and the boards were definitely different. Manu date is on the sticker inside the fridge. Don't let him leave without sealing it or he's just wasting your time. The warm air from the fridge (especially when you open it in the summer) gets into the ice maker through the openings (see the video I posted) slightly melting the ice then it refreezes into a solid block. The circuit board was changed to update the defrost cycle.
Not sure how he can (properly) seal it without you leaving it off for a number of hours and fully defrosting and drying it. I guess worse case you could seal it yourself when he leaves. :)

Everything else looks great (just make sure he installs it all and seals it). I guess it is possible your model year has the updated board. Mine was manufactured in May 2017 and the boards were definitely different. Manu date is on the sticker inside the fridge. Don't let him leave without sealing it or he's just wasting your time. You are right, Ed, on closer inspection hidden under some cardboard in the bottom of the box is the circuit board. My manuf. date is Oct. 2014. I joined the Samsung refrigerator recall FB page. Have learned that under the Magnussen Moss Act, you need 3 unsuccessful repairs to qualify for a total refund on the frig. from Samsung. You must first file a BBB New Jersey complaint against Samsung's home office in N.J. Then you get a call from them to set up a tech visit. Asurion is using UBreakIfix "Samsung-trained" techs to do the installs once the parts are mailed to you. You are NOT to direct the tech to do anything. If they screw up the install, so be it. Get it? 3 unsuccessful repairs. Asurion gave me the address for the UbreakitIfix in Ocala as 1725 SW 12th Ave., Ocala. It looks to be a vacant warehouse and no such co. resides there. So at the moment, I'm D.I.W. Called the local Villages store as well as the one on College Ave., Ocala, and neither said they work on refrigerators. Anyone looking for real good info on this matter should join the aforementioned FB page.

Took me about an hr after doing the sealant the day before (I just let it dry for about 2 hrs) following the 2 videos from PartsDR (the kit vid and the sealant vid) and I've been living happily ever after since after 2+ years of ice block hell. :) When I went through all that 2+ years ago I got nowhere. Not even a first callback. Just wasn't worth it since I like fixing stuff myself and since there is an actual fix (if done right) I can't understand why this is such a major issue for Samsung. The problem is (or was) their repair people never did it right or complete. You got the parts for free so if no one shows up just fix it. You're $210 ahead of me. :D Good luck!

Too late, tech showed up said my auger motor plastic was melted/deformed. Samsung disallowed the repair. He took the parts and left. It's not over. I'm going for a full refund on the frig.

My Kenmore (Whirlpool) is now over 20 years old. I had a few problems through the years though. The compressor stopped at about five years. It was just the start relay so I replaced that. Then it got to over 120 degrees at the frame between the doors. The fancy electronic fan failed, replaced it with the old style metal fan that way $18 instead of over $100 for the Panasonic. Then the ice maker failed, the circuit board had a metal trace that burned off, installed a jumper and it has worked since. Then the handles broke due to age, reinforced with aluminum flashing and epoxy at the mounting screws. Then the in the door ice stopped working, the plastic catch for the ice bin in the door worn so now I just reach in to get the ice. It is still working but the plastic trim is now more yellow than bisque color.
All appliances are the same, lucky to get 7 years out of them. LG French Door fridge lasted 4 years. Did research, Miele is the only one I found that claims to give consumers 20 years use. Convenience out weighs price for me.

If true sounds like you defrosted once too many times with a too hot hairdryer. Been there, done that. :D :D The "repair guy" probably just wanted to get paid for his visit and never intended to do anything. :) Good luck fighting with them. Other then that I don't believe half that stuff I had read on that FB group. Don't dare post that you figured out how to fix it because they will delete the post every time. ;)
