Hi,
I'm trying to decide whether to repair or replace the screens on our pool bird cage. We had some damage last weekend with all the wind. The screens are around 8 years old. How long do they generally last?
thanks, Judy

I wouldn't replace perfectly good screens just because they are old. As long as they look good and are functional, I would repair the damaged sections.

At around 10yrs old more than half of our birdcage screens had deteriorated quite a bit so we opted to replace all the screens and upgrade the quality of the screens. Probably could have waited 2 or more years but felt it more prudent to replace them all at once.

It all has to do with the quality of screen material the sensitivity to UV light deterioration.
The lifespan of a pool screen enclosure depends on the quality screen initially installed. The average lifespan is from 10-12 years. If your screened pool enclosure uses a heavy duty screen, then you can expect almost 20 years.

8 years is good. Their age expectancy is based upon quality weather and sun exposure.

I think we were told around 10 years, and we are on year 7.

We had a huge birdcage around our pool area in Tampa and it was
15 years old when we moved.

It needed to be replaced within a couple of years of that.

The birdcage over our pool is 10.5 years old and going strong. We have replaced a few screens over the years because of wind damage or small holes. No real reason to replace all of them at one time and spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars all at once.

Our screens are 6 years old. We fave replaced four panels over the past several years. Two were caused by hurricane winds and two succumbed to age. Our screen guy tells us they last 8 years or so. We’re going to replace them as needed.

We replaced our birdcage and lanai screens and upgraded them to have more UV protection. Our screens were 8 years old and showing signs of wear. T&D did the work. Don’t remember the cost but was expensive. Very happy with our darker screens and T&Ds work.

Standard screen - 10 years. Upgraded screen - 25 years. If you are going to be in the house more than 10 more years get the upgrade. It's worth the extra cost.

I used Tood's screening 5 years ago and had my entire bird cage rescreened with Super-Screen. Very strong, long lasting. Went through Hurricane a few years ago with no damage. Still looks like new. The original screening put in is not great. T&D did not carry super screen. This is supposed to last 20 years and I believe it. I am on a golf course and Todd's guys drive a golf ball into the screen and it bounced off. Very strong, and I still get plenty of air and sun through it. Todd's men were great.

Ours are 12 years old and still in good shape despite the squirrels running all over them.

If the wind damaged your screen and the screen is ~ 10 years old your screen needs to be replaced.
