I've seen the movie at our theater in LSL. The next day, I saw the movie in Leesburg. No comparison in the experience as the Leesburg theater is so immersive with their huge screen.
The movie? OMG........so absolutely FANTASTIC!!! Spielberg is the master.

Spielberg is a master.
Do wish they provided subtitles when the actors spoke Spanish.
Will have to try the theater in Leesburg.

Must admit I liked the original better, but Spielberg's version was excellent.

I don't speak Spanish but I honestly feel I did not need to know the English translation. Heck, a lot of the Spanish was translated to English by the characters when told to "Speak English"!
You will certainly enjoy the movie so much more on a much bigger screen as you get comfy in those easy chairs with a blanket on your lap. Sublime!

I must have seen the 1961 WSS countless times but must admit it has been several years since I have watched it. After watching clips on YouTube of the 1961 film, there is no doubt in my mind that I enjoyed Spielberg's version so much better.
I like the realism of the story and the characters in this new film. The fact that these characters have so much more depth than the 1961 version is one reason why I enjoy Spielberg's film. I realize also that the coloring of the 1961 version is more cartoonish and "in your face". There is such a difference with modern cinematography vs what was put on the can 60 years ago. I truly appreciate the talent of the actors in this new film and Spielberg's vision with camera angles and setting up a scene are unmatched and don't compare with the Robert Wise produced film.

I could never get past the scene where the guy is standing in the middle of Spanish Harlem, and calls out "Maria!"...
Only one girl comes to her window... :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

Well, you'll be happy to learn that they are closing the theaters in the Villages. You can take the MMP out to Leesburg and see all the movies you want!

Loved Spielberg's West Side Story. The Leesburg Lake Square Mall's AMC (that's the only movie theater in Leesburg) has been our choice for years. It's so much better than the Villages theaters. All comfy recliners, great concessions including a bar,, bigger screens (some of the 12 theaters there have bigger screens than others) etc. And with A-list you can see up to three movies per week for $23 a month at any AMC; free advanced reserved seating. Etc.
Plus, going to the mall - even though it's not a huge mall -!gets us out of the house to a place where we can walk, browse etc or do other errands along the way, when it's cold, rainy or hot. Sometimes we see a movie, walk, do errands or go eat at one of the many nearby restaurants, and return for a second movie.
AMC/the mall saved us during the worst of the pandemic; they became a comforting, familiar refuge of normalcy in a crazy world.

Agree that anything done by Spielberg has to be brilliant! Agree too that this scene is a hoot.
However, for the sake of accuracy, Spanish Harlem is further uptown and on the East Side.
West Side Story takes place, well, on the West Side, from the 30s up to 59th Street, and from Eighth Avenue west to the Hudson River, in an area known as 'Hell's Kitchen.'

However, they filmed much of the original in East Harlem, which is also known as Spanish Harlem.

They're still showing this in movie theaters? Maybe in areas where there is a "target audience". You must have a lot of free time on your hands to go see the same movie in two different locations on consecutive days!

Two years ago the theaters in The Villages were selling out. The crowds were enormous, especially on weekends and rainy days. Now the developer uses covid as an excuse to close one theater, not reopen another theater, and under service the last remaining theater. The developer also used covid as an excuse to close Katie Belles. And whatever happened to the annual golf show on the polo grounds? It's no wonder the developer is considered by many to be an adversary and a greedy one at that!

Covid was never an excuse to close Katie Belles. Covid did cause theaters to close, nationwide. Our (once very busy) theater near our home in MD has permanently closed.
The golf show was cancelled due to covid for one year. The next year (again, due to covid) they did a scaled down version, over several weeks. They are doing the same (but bigger version) this year, which is probably costing them MORE money to put on...

Woke? The movie surely did keep me awake!!! LOL.
I don't support this "woke" movement at all. The only "woke" aspect of this movie is changing the tomboy character Anybodys to a transgender. Spielberg cast actors who have Latin ancestry for the Sharks. Brownface was not used in this film to transform white actors to play the Sharks. If that is considered "woke", I guess I just don't understand the "woke" movement.

Excellent movie
I don't speak any Spanish other than "Hola. ¿Cómo estás? I understood what was being conveyed by the splendid acting and the fact that much of the Spanish was translated to English by the characters. Anita prompted the characters to "speak English" in many of the scenes that had a few Spanish passages. I feel as though I missed absolutely nothing by not understanding the Spanish that was spoken in the movie.
